Vin Diesel says the final Fast & Furious film will reunite Dominic Toretto and Brian O’Conner. The project is now officially titled Fast Forever—not Fast X: Part 2—and Universal currently lists it for theatrical release on March 17, 2028.
That announcement concerns the return of the fictional character Brian O’Conner. It does not confirm that Paul Walker filmed new scenes, that Cody or Caleb Walker will play the role, or that Universal has decided on a particular visual-effects or archival-footage solution.
What Vin Diesel actually announced
At FuelFest in June 2025, Vin Diesel described the conditions he had given Universal for the franchise finale. Among them were bringing the series back to Los Angeles, restoring more of its street-racing and car-culture emphasis, and “reuniting Dom and Brian O’Conner.” Contemporary reporting treated the remark as a plan to bring Brian back into the story.
The careful wording matters. Diesel said the finale would reunite the characters; he did not announce that Paul Walker would return as a living performer. Walker died in 2013, and the available official information does not explain how Brian will appear in the new movie.

There is currently no confirmed production detail identifying the method. It could involve archival material, visual effects, a stand-in, a new performer, or another approach—but none of those possibilities should be presented as fact until Universal makes a specific announcement.
Diesel’s FuelFest remarks and the surrounding reporting also initially associated the finale with an April 2027 target. That earlier window has since been superseded by Universal’s current listing.
The movie is now called Fast Forever
Universal’s official film page identifies the next installment as Fast Forever and gives its theatrical release date as March 17, 2028. The title and release window are also reflected on Universal’s upcoming-movies page and in reporting on the franchise’s 25th-anniversary events.
For current coverage, “Fast X: Part 2” is best treated as an older working reference rather than the film’s official title. Universal’s present listing is the most authoritative source for the project’s name and date:
Release schedules can change, so the March 17, 2028 date should be understood as the studio’s current announced theatrical date, not a guarantee that the schedule cannot move again.

Why Brian O’Conner’s return is significant
Brian was not simply another member of the ensemble. Played by Paul Walker, he was the audience’s principal entry point into the original Fast and Furious: an undercover Los Angeles police officer who became Dom’s closest friend, brother-in-law, and fellow driver.
After Walker’s death, the series retired Brian rather than killing him off. In Furious 7, the character’s departure was framed as a separation from the team so he could remain with Mia and their children. That left the door open for Brian to exist within the story without appearing onscreen.
A reunion between Dom and Brian would therefore carry both narrative and emotional weight. It could provide a direct connection to the street-racing identity of the first films while giving the long-running saga a final acknowledgment of the character who helped define it.

It also creates an unusually sensitive creative challenge: the movie would need to honor Brian without implying that Paul Walker is still available to perform new material. The eventual choice will affect the tone of the finale as much as its plot.
What remains unconfirmed
Neither Universal’s current Fast Forever listing nor the reported Diesel announcement supplies a cast announcement or story explanation for Brian’s appearance. The following points remain open:

How this follows Fast X
Fast X, released in 2023, is the tenth film in the main series and ends on a major cliffhanger. The film leaves Dom and his son in a dangerous situation while several other central characters face apparently catastrophic consequences. Fast Forever is the planned continuation of that unresolved story, as well as the intended conclusion to the main saga.
That makes Fast X the most relevant film to revisit before the finale. Viewers who want a physical copy can look for the Fast X 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray; Universal’s home-entertainment materials confirm the 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release and its bonus content. Availability and pricing vary by retailer and should be checked at the time of purchase. The official release information is available through Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.
For a full franchise catch-up, Universal also offers the Fast & Furious 10-movie collection on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray. That collection is useful for tracing the series from its Los Angeles street-racing beginnings through the increasingly international action films, but it does not reveal any plot details about Fast Forever.
Those who prefer streaming can check the official Peacock page for Fast X. Streaming availability can depend on territory, subscription status, and changes to the service’s catalog.
The return to Los Angeles could matter too
Diesel’s comments connected Brian’s return with another stated ambition for the finale: taking the series back to Los Angeles and restoring a stronger emphasis on street racing and car culture. That would echo the identity of the first film, which centered on modified cars, illegal races, garage communities, and the relationship between Dom and Brian.
The later films expanded the formula into global espionage, elaborate heists, military conspiracies, and action sequences that frequently ignored ordinary physical limits. A return to Los Angeles does not necessarily mean the franchise will abandon spectacle, but Diesel’s remarks suggest an attempt to make the finale feel more closely tied to the series’ beginnings.

That combination—Los Angeles, cars, Dom, and Brian—is likely why the announcement resonated with longtime fans. It points toward a conclusion built around the franchise’s original emotional and cultural vocabulary rather than only its scale.

The most useful confirmation would come from a formal Universal casting or production announcement. Readers should look for:
- An official cast list: This could clarify which returning performers are involved, but a cast list alone may not explain Brian’s screen presence.
- A production statement about Brian: Universal or the filmmakers may eventually explain whether the character appears through previously filmed material, visual effects, a performance by another actor, or a different storytelling device.
- A trailer or promotional footage: Promotional material could confirm whether Brian appears physically, through flashbacks, or only through dialogue and story references.
- Updated release information: The currently listed date is March 17, 2028, but theatrical schedules can change before production and marketing are complete.
Until those details are published, the strongest confirmed version of the story remains limited: Vin Diesel says Fast Forever will reunite Dom and Brian O’Conner, while the film’s specific treatment of Brian is still unknown.

The Bottom Line
The accurate headline is that Vin Diesel says Fast Forever will reunite Dom and Brian O’Conner—not that Paul Walker has been confirmed to return. Universal has officially dated the finale for March 17, 2028, but it has not yet explained how Brian will be brought back or who, if anyone, will perform new material connected to the character.
