Among the most personal were messages from fellow Oklahoma artists Carrie Underwood and Zach Bryan.
Underwood remembered Keith as a “true blue COWBOY” in a spiritual tribute that invoked Oklahoma, heaven and Jesus. Bryan recalled listening to Keith during childhood rides in his father’s car. Their messages were different in tone, but both reflected Keith’s reach across generations of Oklahoma-connected country music.

When Toby Keith died, country artists shared very different memories
Keith’s family announced that he died peacefully surrounded by family on February 5, 2024. The news prompted an immediate response from performers, industry organizations and artists who had worked with him or grown up hearing his music.
Reports published on February 6 documented reactions from major country figures including Carrie Underwood and Zach Bryan. The two tributes are notable because they came from artists associated with Oklahoma, but they did not describe the same kind of relationship with Keith.

Underwood had a documented professional connection with Keith and later performed at a Nashville benefit honoring him. Bryan’s public message was a personal remembrance of Keith’s music and its place in his family life. The available reporting supports describing Bryan as an Oklahoma-born artist influenced by Keith—not as Keith’s formal protégé or documented mentee.
Carrie Underwood called Keith a “true blue COWBOY”
Underwood shared photographs of herself with Keith and wrote that a “true blue COWBOY” had made his ride to heaven. Her message asked Jesus to “saddle up the horses,” referred to Keith’s Oklahoma identity and concluded with a statement that she and others would miss him.
The tribute’s cowboy imagery and religious language fit the public persona Keith cultivated throughout his career, while the Oklahoma reference underscored a connection they shared. Underwood is from Checotah, Oklahoma, and Keith was born in Clinton, Oklahoma, before being raised in the state. Their shared regional identity was part of the emotional context, but it was not the only basis for Underwood’s message: the two had also appeared together in the country-music industry.
The photographs accompanying Underwood’s post included images from the 2022 BMI Country Awards. At that event, Keith received the BMI Icon Award, and Underwood performed in his honor. That history helps explain why her response was both personal and grounded in their professional relationship.

Zach Bryan remembered Keith from rides with his father
Bryan’s tribute focused less on public honors and more on a specific family memory. He wrote that there had been “too many rides in my old man’s car listening to Toby Keith,” adding that it was difficult to hear the news. He ended with the words, “rest in peace friend we love you.”
The memory presents Keith as part of Bryan’s musical upbringing rather than simply as a fellow recording artist. It also illustrates how Keith’s songs reached listeners before they entered the music business: for Bryan, Keith’s music was connected to time spent with his father.
Bryan’s message should not be read as evidence of a formal personal friendship, mentorship or collaboration with Keith. The documented point is more restrained and more revealing: Bryan, another artist with Oklahoma roots, grew up hearing Keith and publicly acknowledged his influence after Keith’s death.
The response extended far beyond Oklahoma
Keith’s death produced a broad response from country music and beyond. Tributes came from Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, George Strait, Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan and Old Dominion, as well as the Academy of Country Music, the Country Music Association and the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Separate reporting also recorded reactions from artists including Jason Aldean, Ricky Skaggs and Kristin Chenoweth. The range of names mattered: Keith’s legacy crossed traditional country, contemporary country, industry institutions and artists from outside the genre’s usual boundaries.
Those responses did not all express the same relationship or emotion. Some artists had performed with Keith, some had been influenced by his songwriting and recordings, and others were recognizing his importance to country music as a whole. Taken together, however, they showed the breadth of his standing after a career built around songs such as “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” “I Love This Bar,” “As Good As I Once Was” and “Beer for My Horses.”
Underwood later performed at the Toby Keith: American Icon benefit
Underwood’s tribute continued beyond her social-media post. On July 29, 2024, she joined nearly two dozen performers at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena for Toby Keith: American Icon, a benefit concert celebrating Keith’s music, heart and life.
Underwood performed Keith’s “A Little Less Talk and a Lot More Action.” The concert lineup also included Trace Adkins, Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Jelly Roll, Darius Rucker, Lainey Wilson, Clay Walker and Keith’s daughter Krystal Keith, among others.

The event also featured performances of songs including “As Good As I Once Was,” “Beer for My Horses” and “God Love Her.” A particularly poignant segment used Keith’s final recorded vocal: a version of Joe Diffie’s “Ships That Don’t Come In” associated with HARDY’s DIFFTAPE project.
Proceeds from the benefit supported the Toby Keith Foundation’s OK Kids Korral and Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. NBC later broadcast a two-hour television version of the event on August 28, 2024. The network’s program materials also identified related clips involving performers such as Blake Shelton and Willie Nelson.
Bryan was not listed in the reported lineup for the Nashville benefit. There is also no basis in the available reporting to say that Underwood and Bryan performed together or appeared together in the NBC special. Their connection in this story is that both remembered Keith publicly, not that they participated in the same tribute production.
How to listen back to Keith’s catalog
The benefit’s song choices showed why Keith’s catalog remained central to the remembrance: it included rowdy early hits, reflective later songs and collaborations that represented different parts of his career. Readers who want a physical overview can look for Toby Keith: Greatest Hits: The Show Dog Years, a CD compilation listed through the official Toby Keith store and represented among current physical Toby Keith releases. Availability and edition details can change, so it should be treated as a catalog collection—not as an official tribute recording or a benefit product.
Other physical releases, including compilations such as 35 Biggest Hits, may appeal to vinyl collectors, but stock and exact retailer listings should be checked at the time of purchase.

Underwood’s message emphasized faith, Oklahoma and the cowboy identity Keith made central to his public image. Bryan’s message placed Keith inside a family memory, linking his songs to childhood car rides and a father-son bond. Those details made the tributes distinct rather than interchangeable.
Best Value
The later American Icon concert expanded that remembrance into a public celebration, bringing together performers from different generations and parts of country music while raising money for children’s causes. Together, the immediate messages and the later benefit showed Keith’s influence in two forms: as a defining country star to his peers and as a familiar voice in the personal memories of younger listeners.
