Frank Valentini, executive producer of General Hospital, remembered Alexander as an important figure on the program and highlighted Lesley Webber’s status as one of daytime television’s early female doctors. His tribute was circulated in reports by Soap Opera Digest and TheWrap.
She originated Dr. Lesley Webber on General Hospital
Alexander joined General Hospital in 1973 as Dr. Lesley Webber, a physician who became one of the show’s enduring legacy characters. Lesley’s family, relationships, and medical career placed her at the center of several major storylines during a formative period for the ABC soap opera.
Among the most important material was Lesley’s relationship with Rick Webber, played by Chris Robinson, and the conflict involving Monica Quartermaine. Lesley was also central to stories involving her daughter, Laura, including a trial storyline that helped establish the show’s dramatic importance. Soap-opera historian Christopher Schemering identified the Lesley-Rick-Monica material and the Laura trial as part of the story engine that helped General Hospital gain prominence, alongside the later Luke and Laura phenomenon.
Alexander left the series in 1984. The program initially wrote Lesley out as having died in a car accident, an exit that prompted a strong reaction from viewers. When Alexander returned in 1996, the story revealed that Lesley had survived: she had been drugged and held in a coma. The explanation allowed the character to be restored to the show’s continuing history without erasing her earlier departure.

Alexander began performing as a child. Her early work included radio and television, and her Broadway debut came in The Children’s Hour in 1952. She appeared in the 1956 film Crime in the Streets at age 14.
Before and alongside her daytime work, Alexander built a broad television résumé. Her credits included Father Knows Best, The Twilight Zone, and The Danny Kaye Show, as well as television movies and other prime-time programs. She also appeared in The Lindbergh Kidnapping Case.
Her first major daytime role was on The Clear Horizon. In 1965, she made a brief appearance on General Hospital as Lorna Hill, years before taking on the very different and much more enduring role of Lesley Webber.
Her years as Susan Hunter Martin on Days of Our Lives
Before joining General Hospital, Alexander was a major daytime presence on Days of Our Lives. She played Susan Hunter Martin from 1966 to 1973, with Legacy describing the run as exceeding 800 episodes.

Alexander moved from Days of Our Lives to General Hospital after her contract with Days lapsed or ended amid contract discussions. Reports from Soap Opera Digest and TheWrap describe General Hospital as actively recruiting her for the role of Lesley.
Her work on both programs placed her among the significant daytime performers of the 1960s and 1970s. She was not simply associated with one soap opera: she helped shape the histories of two long-running serials and later connected different generations of viewers through her returns.

Later television work
After leaving General Hospital in 1984, Alexander appeared on Another World from 1986 to 1991. She also continued working in television, with credits that included Sunset Beach and television movies.
Even as her later screen work extended beyond daytime drama, Lesley Webber remained the role most closely identified with her. The character’s survival, returns, and place in Laura’s family history gave Alexander an unusually durable connection to General Hospital.

Legacy’s remembrance included words from Susan Hayes, Alexander’s Days of Our Lives co-star. Hayes recalled Alexander’s wisdom, humor, taste, and goodness, offering a personal perspective on the actress beyond her best-known roles.
The official General Hospital social-media presence was also reported to have shared a statement and photographs honoring Alexander. ABC’s directly accessible pages reviewed for the death reports did not contain a separate dedicated obituary page.
