Peterson announced his death publicly on April 6, saying that her son had faced a long struggle with substance abuse while also remembering his humor, kindness, athletic interests, love of music and devotion to his daughter.
What happened to Josh Waring?
Waring died on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024. His mother, Lauri Peterson, announced the death six days later in a public Instagram tribute. Peterson identified him as Joshua-Michael Phillip Waring and listed his dates of life as December 20, 1988, to March 31, 2024. Those dates correspond to the reported age of 35.
In her tribute, Peterson described Waring as someone who had fought for his life for much of his adult years. She referred to his long struggle with substance abuse, but her message also focused on his personality and the things that brought him happiness, including music, sports, humor, kindness and his relationship with his daughter, Kennady. Reality Blurb reported on Peterson’s tribute at the time.
What was Josh Waring’s cause of death?
The first reports did not identify an official cause of death. TVLine reported on April 6 that no official cause had yet been disclosed.

Two days later, TMZ reported that police were treating the death as a possible overdose while toxicology testing was pending. That early report described a suspected drug-related death, not a final medical determination.
Later reports said the Orange County coroner determined that Waring died from the combined effects of fentanyl, methamphetamine and olanzapine. Those reports said the manner of death was ruled accidental. Because the final finding is being reported here through subsequent secondary coverage rather than a coroner document independently reviewed for this article, it is more accurate to attribute the determination than to present it as an independently verified autopsy record.
The changing language in the coverage reflects the normal coroner process. The Orange County Sheriff-Coroner explains that unexpected or unnatural deaths can require an autopsy and laboratory testing, and that a cause of death may initially remain pending until the case is closed. The available reporting supports an accidental manner of death; it does not support describing Waring’s death as suicide.

Waring’s connection to The Real Housewives of Orange County
Peterson was part of the original cast of The Real Housewives of Orange County. She appeared during Seasons 1 through 4, from 2006 to 2009, and later returned as a friend of the cast in Seasons 6 and 8.
Waring’s substance-use struggles and legal problems were discussed publicly in connection with Peterson’s appearances on the series. In 2020, Bravo reported that he had been released from jail after accepting a plea deal in an attempted-murder case. That history formed part of the family’s public story, but it does not define the whole of Waring’s life or the way his mother remembered him after his death.
Bravo’s coverage of Waring’s life after jail also reported that Peterson and her husband, George Peterson, had adopted and were raising Waring’s daughter, Kennady. Peterson’s 2024 tribute similarly presented Kennady as an important source of joy and purpose in her son’s life.

What Lauri Peterson said in her tribute
Peterson’s announcement acknowledged the severity of Waring’s substance-use disorder without reducing him to it. Alongside the reference to his years of struggle, she remembered his warmth, sense of humor, athletic interests, musical passions and love for his daughter.
That distinction matters when recounting a death involving substance use. The initial police report and later toxicology reporting describe different stages of the investigation, while Peterson’s message was a family tribute—not an announcement of the final coroner’s findings. There is also no basis in the available reporting to speculate about what Waring knowingly consumed or to describe the pharmacological role of each substance beyond the attributed coroner determination.

The larger context
Waring’s death brought renewed attention to a family struggle that had previously been visible through reality television. But the most complete account includes both parts of the public record: his long-documented substance-use disorder and legal difficulties, and Peterson’s description of him as a loved son and father whose life also included humor, athletic interests, music and family.
The responsible account of his death is therefore precise: Peterson announced that Waring had died at 35 on March 31, 2024; early reports described a possible overdose while testing was pending; and later reporting said the coroner attributed the accidental death to the combined effects of fentanyl, methamphetamine and olanzapine.
