After USA Network’s detective comedy ended its eight-season run in March 2014, James Roday Rodriguez, Dulé Hill, Timothy Omundson, Maggie Lawson, Kirsten Nelson, and Corbin Bernsen reunited for three feature-length continuations: Psych: The Movie (2017), Psych 2: Lassie Come Home (2020), and Psych 3: This Is Gus (2021).
That makes Psych unusual among long-running television series. Its central ensemble did not simply reunite for a one-off nostalgia project; the actors continued developing their characters and relationships in a small but genuine film franchise. Here is what the principal cast did after the original series—and where the franchise stands now.
The original Psych cast
Premiering in 2006, Psych followed Shawn Spencer, a remarkably observant man who pretended to be psychic so he could work as a consultant for the Santa Barbara Police Department. His lifelong friend Gus became his reluctant business partner, while detectives Carlton Lassiter and Juliet O’Hara provided the police-world counterweight to Shawn’s improvised investigations.
The show’s appeal depended heavily on the chemistry among its six principal performers. James Roday Rodriguez and Dulé Hill supplied the comic center; Timothy Omundson, Maggie Lawson, Kirsten Nelson, and Corbin Bernsen gave the series its police-procedural structure and emotional history.
#1 Best Overall
James Roday Rodriguez as Shawn Spencer
Then: the fake psychic detective
Shawn Spencer is hyper-observant, impulsive, irresponsible, and often several steps ahead of everyone around him. Rather than admit that he has trained himself to notice tiny details, Shawn claims to receive psychic visions. His supposed powers allow him to solve cases, but his immaturity frequently creates as many problems as it solves.
Roday Rodriguez was also an important creative force behind the show. In addition to starring as Shawn, he wrote and directed episodes and helped shape the series’ distinctive mix of mystery, parody, and friendship.
Now: television, film, and a reclaimed professional name
After Psych, Roday Rodriguez continued acting and directing. One of his most prominent post-Psych television roles was Gary Mendez on ABC’s family drama A Million Little Things, which concluded with its fifth and final season. It is more accurate to describe that series as a major recent role than as an ongoing show.
Current credits use the name James Roday Rodriguez. During the original run of Psych, he was generally billed as James Roday; he later reclaimed Rodriguez, his birth surname, in his professional name. The change does not represent a new character or a different performer—it is the same actor who played Shawn.

Dulé Hill as Burton “Gus” Guster
Then: Shawn’s cautious best friend
Burton “Gus” Guster is Shawn’s opposite in almost every practical respect. Gus is careful, responsible, career-minded, and frequently alarmed by Shawn’s schemes. He also has a broad range of knowledge and skills that Shawn’s fake psychic persona tends to overshadow.
Gus begins as Shawn’s best friend but becomes an essential partner in the psychic-detective business. The character’s caution never cancels out his loyalty: no matter how reckless Shawn becomes, Gus repeatedly returns to help him.
Now: a continued television career and a central role in the films
Hill remained active on television after Psych, with later roles including appearances in Ballers, Suits, Black Monday, and This Is Us. He also remained one of the central performers in the Psych follow-up films.
Rank #2
Psych 3: This Is Gus placed Hill’s character at the center of the story. The 2021 comedy-mystery follows Gus as he deals with impending fatherhood and wedding plans, while Shawn’s investigative instincts inevitably pull the pair into another case. Peacock’s listing identifies Hill and Roday Rodriguez among the film’s principal stars and gives the movie a running time of 96 minutes.

Then: the skeptical detective
Carlton “Lassie” Lassiter begins Psych as a skeptical Santa Barbara detective who has little patience for Shawn’s behavior or his supposed psychic abilities. His antagonism toward Shawn is one of the show’s recurring comic engines, but Lassiter gradually becomes one of its emotional anchors.
Underneath the irritation, Lassiter is a committed police officer and a deeply caring colleague. His relationships with Juliet, Chief Vick, Shawn, and Gus give the character more dimension as the series progresses.
Now: recovery, return, and an enduring franchise connection
Omundson suffered a major stroke in April 2017. His recovery became an important part of his professional story, but it should not be treated as the whole story of his career. He returned to acting, including a return as Lassiter in the Psych films, and also played Gregory on This Is Us.
The second reunion film, Psych 2: Lassie Come Home, made Omundson’s character the emotional focus. Its title and story centered on Lassiter, allowing the film to acknowledge the character’s importance while bringing Omundson back into the ensemble. The American Heart Association has documented Omundson’s stroke recovery and return to acting.
Maggie Lawson as Juliet “Jules” O’Hara
Then: the grounded detective and Shawn’s partner
Juliet O’Hara is Lassiter’s police partner and one of the more level-headed people in the department. She is an effective detective in her own right, which helps keep her from functioning only as Shawn’s romantic interest.
Juliet and Shawn eventually become a couple, but the relationship develops over the course of the series rather than replacing the show’s investigative and comic storylines. Lawson’s performance gave Juliet a balance of competence, warmth, and skepticism toward Shawn’s more extravagant claims.
Rank #3
Now: acting, podcasting, and advocacy
Lawson reprised Juliet in all three follow-up films. Her documented recent work also includes acting projects such as SugarPlummed; Paramount’s 2025 biography listed her for the project I Am Courtney Stodden, using the appropriate forward-looking language rather than presenting it as an already completed release.
One of Lawson’s clearest ongoing connections to the franchise is The Psychologists Are In, the rewatch podcast she co-hosts with Omundson. The podcast gives longtime viewers a direct way to revisit the series with two of its actors rather than relying only on retrospective interviews or convention appearances.
Lawson’s current profile also includes animal advocacy. Her post-Psych work therefore spans acting, the franchise’s fan community, podcasting, and charitable interests—not just a list of television credits.
Kirsten Nelson as Chief Karen Vick
Then: the department’s stabilizing authority
Karen Vick is the chief of the Santa Barbara Police Department and the senior authority figure who must manage the department’s competing personalities. She recognizes Shawn’s usefulness even when his methods are unconventional, while also keeping Lassiter and the rest of the team focused on their jobs.
Nelson’s performance helped make the police station feel like a continuing workplace rather than a rotating backdrop for individual mysteries. Chief Vick’s practical authority balanced Shawn’s chaos and Gus’s anxiety.
Now: continued professional activity
Nelson remained professionally active after the original series, and she was part of the ensemble that carried the Psych world into the reunion films. The available retrospective evidence supports describing her as continuing to work, but it does not establish one definitive current series or job that should be presented as her headline role.

That distinction matters in “then and now” coverage: an actor can remain active without being attached to a single highly visible, ongoing television production. For Nelson, the most reliable summary is continued work and continued association with the Psych ensemble.
Rank #4
Corbin Bernsen as Henry Spencer
Then: Shawn’s demanding father
Henry Spencer is Shawn’s father and a former police detective. His strict approach to raising Shawn helped produce the observational abilities that later made Shawn a successful consultant, although their relationship is complicated by years of conflict and disappointment.
Henry’s role in the series grew beyond that of a disapproving parent. He became a source of police knowledge, family history, and emotional grounding, particularly as Shawn matured and accepted more responsibility.
Now: still part of the Psych family
Bernsen remained connected to the franchise through the follow-up films. He also appeared alongside Maggie Lawson in the independent pilot Woodstockers, according to Lawson’s 2025 Paramount biography.

The accurate point is that his work continued after Psych and that Henry Spencer remained part of the franchise’s extended ensemble.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the Psych cast reunion lasted
The most important “now” fact about the cast is not that every actor has the same type of current role. It is that the ensemble preserved a working relationship after the series ended.
The original show concluded in March 2014 after eight seasons. Three years later, the principal cast reunited for Psych: The Movie. Psych 2: Lassie Come Home followed in 2020, and Psych 3: This Is Gus arrived in 2021. The films retained the central actors while shifting the focus from the original weekly structure to larger, character-driven stories.
The continuation also allowed the characters to move forward. Lassiter’s story was shaped by the circumstances surrounding his recovery, while the third film gave Gus a major personal milestone. Shawn remained the investigative catalyst, but the films did not treat the other characters as frozen versions of their television selves.

Will there be a fourth Psych movie?
Three follow-up films are verified: Psych: The Movie, Psych 2: Lassie Come Home, and Psych 3: This Is Gus. In the sources reviewed for this article, no official fourth-film announcement was located.
That wording is deliberately cautious. Cast enthusiasm, creator interest, fan campaigns, and reunion appearances are not the same thing as a studio greenlight. A fourth film may remain a possibility, but it should not be described as announced or in production without an official confirmation.
Where to watch or own the series and films
Peacock’s official catalog lists Psych 3: This Is Gus for streaming. Availability can vary by country and can change as licensing arrangements change, so viewers outside the United States should check the service available in their region.
For physical-media collectors, Universal Pictures At Home lists Psych: The Complete Collection as containing seasons 1–8 plus all three follow-up films. Barnes & Noble also lists a repackaged DVD edition. That makes Psych: The Complete Collection the most convenient ownership option for readers who want the original series and its full film continuation in one purchase. As with any retailer listing, confirm the current edition, price, stock, and playback format before ordering.
