The original Village People are no longer together. Of the classic six-member lineup, four are living former members pursuing solo, private, or occasional legacy work; Glenn Hughes died in 2001; and Victor Willis died on June 30, 2026, at age 74. The branded Village People touring act existed in a different form from the classic group, and its status after Willis’s death had not been authoritatively confirmed by August 12, 2026.
That distinction matters. The men associated with the Cop, Native American, Cowboy, Construction Worker, G.I., and Leatherman characters were not all in the same lineup throughout the group’s history. Here is what is known about the original six, the later replacements, and the uncertain future of the Village People name.
Status checked through August 12, 2026.
The original six Village People at a glance
| Member | Classic character | Where he is now |
|---|---|---|
| Victor Willis | Cop; later Admiral; lead singer and lyricist | Died June 30, 2026, aged 74, after a short and aggressive illness. |
| Felipe Rose | Native American character | Living and active as a solo performer, recording artist, disco historian, and advocate. |
| Randy Jones | Cowboy | Living and active in solo music, writing, acting, narration, and documentary work. |
| David Hodo | Construction Worker | Living former member who maintains a much lower public profile. |
| Alex Briley | G.I. or Soldier | Living former member described in available biographies as retired from the group and largely private. |
| Glenn Hughes | Leatherman or Biker | Died of lung cancer in Manhattan on March 4, 2001, aged 50. |
Only Felipe Rose and Randy Jones have maintained especially visible public-facing careers connected to the legacy of the original group. David Hodo and Alex Briley have largely stayed out of the spotlight. None of the four surviving original members should be described as part of the last Victor Willis-led Village People lineup.
Victor Willis: the original Cop and lead singer
Victor Willis was the original lead singer, lyricist, and performer behind the Cop character. He was also associated with the Admiral character in the group’s later presentation. Willis’s voice and songwriting were central to the Village People sound, particularly during the group’s classic commercial period.

After years of disputes involving control of the Village People name and characters, Willis returned to the group in 2017. His return came with a revamped lineup rather than a reunion of the original six. The subsequent arrangement made Willis the lead singer of the officially documented touring act.
Willis died on June 30, 2026, at the age of 74. His family and the group described the cause as a short but aggressive illness. No more specific cause should be assumed from that description. Contemporary reporting indicated that he continued performing as recently as May 2026, making his death a particularly recent turning point for the act.
Because the last widely indexed official lineup still showed Willis as a member before his death, it is too early to state that he was replaced, that the group permanently disbanded, or that the same act definitely continues. Those questions require a new announcement from the organization, management, rights holder, or a confirmed venue booking.
Felipe Rose: the original Native American character
Felipe Rose remains publicly active outside the Willis-controlled Village People touring lineup. He is a solo recording artist, performer, disco historian, and advocate, and his official biography emphasizes work that extends beyond the group’s trademark characters.

That combination of new performance work and legacy material makes him one of the most visible surviving original members.
Rose was also part of the earlier touring configuration that included original members Alex Briley and, at various points, other performers. The legal and licensing changes surrounding Willis’s 2017 return ended that earlier arrangement under the Village People name. Rose therefore belongs in the category of surviving original member and independent legacy artist, not current member of the last officially documented Village People lineup.
Randy Jones: the original Cowboy
Randy Jones continues to work as a solo artist, author, actor, narrator, and documentary interview subject. His public biography identifies him as the original Village People Cowboy and a founding member.
Jones was part of the classic group from 1977 to 1980 and again from 1987 to 1990. He later developed a broader career in music and media, including the solo recording Ticket to the World. His documentary appearances and interviews have also made him an important commentator on the group’s history.

Jones is sometimes described loosely as a current Village People member because he remains closely associated with the Cowboy image. That wording is misleading. He is a former member of the branded touring act, while continuing to work independently and speak about the group’s legacy.

David Hodo: the original Construction Worker
David Hodo was the original Construction Worker during the Village People’s classic commercial period. He was one of the performers who helped establish the visual formula that made the group immediately recognizable.
Compared with Rose and Jones, Hodo has a much lower public profile today. Available biographies and interviews identify him as a former Village Person who later left the touring act, but they do not provide a sufficiently reliable account of his present-day occupation, residence, health, or retirement date.
The accurate answer is therefore a restrained one: Hodo is a surviving original member who is no longer part of the last Willis-led lineup and has maintained a largely private post-group life. More specific claims would require a recent direct interview or an official update.

Alex Briley was the original G.I., or Soldier, character. He was introduced to the project through Victor Willis and remained associated with the group through a substantial part of its later touring history.
Briley was part of the long-running post-1980s touring configuration, but he was no longer in the Willis-led lineup after the 2017 legal and licensing changes. Available biographical material describes him as retired from the group, and his public profile is comparatively private.
There has been recurring online speculation about Briley’s family and about the identity of the person shown in the famous Falling Man photograph from the September 11 attacks. That subject concerns his brother Jonathan and has never been authoritatively established as an identification. It is not evidence of Alex Briley’s current activities and should not be presented as settled fact.
Glenn Hughes: the original Leatherman
Glenn Hughes was the original Leatherman, also known as the Biker. He remained associated with the Village People for many years and retired from regular performance in the 1990s.

Why there are several different Village People lineups
The phrase the Village People can refer to two different things: the original six performers who created the familiar characters, or a later touring and business operation using the group’s name and imagery.

After Willis’s initial departure, the act went through repeated lineup changes. Later performers included Ray Simpson, Jeff Olson, Eric Anzalone, Mark Lee, Bill Whitefield, James Newman, and others. Those performers may have appeared in the same character roles, but they were not members of the original six.
The lineup history became especially important in 2017, when Willis returned as lead singer after legal and business disputes concerning control of the Village People name and characters. The group then operated with a revamped cast. That settlement-related history is why a photograph or concert listing labeled simply Village People does not automatically show the classic group.
The last documented Village People lineup before Willis’s death
The last officially documented lineup located for this update was the Willis-led configuration listed below. It should be called the last documented lineup before June 30, 2026, not the current lineup and not the original group.
- Victor Willis — Cop or Admiral and lead singer
- Javier Perez — Native American character
- James Kwong — Construction Worker
- Nicholas Manelic — Cowboy
- James Lee — G.I.
- James J.J. Lippold — Leatherman
This list explains why the four surviving original members—Rose, Jones, Hodo, and Briley—should not be inserted into current tour descriptions without confirmation. The characters continued, but most of the performers wearing them had changed.
What is happening to the Village People now?
Before Willis’s death, the Village People continued to perform internationally, release occasional new material, and build shows around enduring songs such as Y.M.C.A., Macho Man, In the Navy, and Go West.
After Willis’s death, the status of the branded act is unresolved in the available reporting. No authoritative announcement located by August 12, 2026, confirmed a replacement lead singer, a new official touring lineup, or a permanent continuation under the same configuration.

The group’s cultural and commercial legacy rests on a small collection of instantly recognizable recordings. Y.M.C.A., Macho Man, In the Navy, and Go West continue to introduce the Village People to new listeners, even as the personnel and ownership history have become more complicated.
Y.M.C.A. was added to the Library of Congress National Recording Registry in 2021, and the song received Grammy Hall of Fame recognition in 2022. Those honors reflect its enduring place in popular music, not the existence of a continuously unchanged band lineup.

The song’s cultural meaning also needs careful attribution. The Library of Congress discusses its history in the context of Village People’s imagery and its connection to gay culture. Victor Willis later rejected the description of Y.M.C.A. as a gay anthem. Both points belong in an accurate account: the cultural interpretation is widely discussed, while Willis’s contrary view was publicly expressed by the song’s original lead singer and lyricist.
For fans of the original recordings
For fans who want the familiar songs in one physical package, a Village People CD such as The Very Best of the Village People is a straightforward option. Compilations vary by edition, so check the specific track listing for Y.M.C.A., In the Navy, Macho Man, Go West, and any other songs you want before buying.

The bottom line
The original Village People are not a functioning six-member group today. Victor Willis and Glenn Hughes are deceased, while Felipe Rose, Randy Jones, David Hodo, and Alex Briley are surviving former members whose post-group lives differ considerably. Rose and Jones remain the most publicly active in solo and legacy work; Hodo and Briley have kept lower profiles.
A separate branded Village People act was still touring before Willis’s death, but its post-2026 future had not been officially settled in the available evidence. Until a new lineup is announced, the most accurate description is not that the Village People have definitely ended or definitely continued, but that the name’s next chapter remains unconfirmed.
