Why the Full-Frontal Penis Montage in *Minx* Has a Purpose

The full-frontal montage in Minx is a centerfold audition, a feminist reversal of the gaze, and a workplace-comedy scene. Its purpose is to make the show's central contradiction visible.

The full-frontal montage in the Minx pilot is not detachable provocation. It is the scene that makes the show’s premise visible, forces Joyce Prigger to confront the gap between abstract feminist politics and embodied sexual experience, and reverses the familiar entertainment-industry arrangement in which men evaluate women’s bodies. It is also a workplace-comedy sequence: what might ordinarily be staged as erotic spectacle becomes a casting call, complete with professional judgments, competing performances, and production logistics.

That combination is why the scene matters. Minx is not simply displaying male nudity; it is asking what changes when women become the editors, commissioners, and viewers of that display.

What happens in the montage?

Approximately twenty minutes into the pilot, the staff behind the proposed women’s magazine conducts an audition for its first male centerfold. More than two dozen men appear before the team. They undress, pose, move, and present themselves while Joyce and her colleagues assess which candidate might suit the magazine’s planned issue.

The sequence is cut to Jean Knight’s “Mr. Big Stuff.” That choice gives the montage a playful, catalog-like rhythm. The music and editing make the scene feel closer to an office presentation or fashion casting than to a conventional sex scene. The men are prospective models and employees of the magazine’s production process; the staff is trying to select an image for a particular editorial concept.

The pilot later connects the centerfold to a construction-worker theme. In other words, the nudity is not an isolated stunt inserted between plot developments. The staff needs to produce a magazine, and this is part of producing it.

1. The scene explains the premise faster than exposition could

Minx begins with Joyce, an educated and determined feminist editor, trying to create a serious magazine for women. Doug Renetti, the low-rent erotic publisher willing to finance it, agrees only on the condition that every issue contain a nude male centerfold.

That bargain is the pilot’s central contradiction. Joyce wants a publication about women’s lives, rights, health, and liberation; Doug understands that a magazine also needs a commercial hook. The audition turns that contradiction into an image the audience can immediately understand: a feminist editorial project is being built inside an erotic publishing business.

Without the montage, the premise could remain mostly verbal. With it, viewers see the practical consequences of Doug’s condition. Someone has to find the model. Someone has to decide what kind of body and performance fit the issue. Someone has to negotiate the relationship between editorial intention and commercial appeal.

The sequence also reflects the show’s historical research. Creator Ellen Rapoport drew on real women’s erotic magazines, particularly Playgirl and Viva. Those publications did not necessarily separate sexual imagery from writing about women’s rights, health, self-love, culture, and gender relations. Their existence complicates the assumption that erotic media and feminist discussion must occupy entirely different worlds.

Readers interested in that source material may also want Playgirl: The Official History of a Cult Magazine, a physical history of the publication that helped inspire Minx. It is not a tie-in to the series and does not contain the show’s screenplay; its value is as historical context for the fictional magazine.

2. It gives Joyce a problem her politics cannot solve in the abstract

Joyce begins the series as intellectually committed to women’s liberation but personally sheltered. She can argue for women’s independence and sexual agency in principle. The audition confronts her with the concrete, visual, and bodily implications of a magazine designed around women’s pleasure.

That distinction is important. Joyce is not merely surprised to see naked men. She is forced to recognize that her own liberation is unfinished. She has spent much of her life thinking about women as political subjects, but she has not fully considered women as viewers, judges, and desiring participants in sexual culture.

Ophelia Lovibond, who plays Joyce, described the sequence as part of Joyce’s realization that men are not physically interchangeable. The montage therefore externalizes a change in consciousness. Joyce must look, compare, evaluate, and make a professional decision while also discovering her own reactions.

The scene does not present Joyce as a perfectly formed feminist who arrives to enlighten everyone else. Her discomfort is part of the point. She advocates liberation but initially recoils from the commercial and sexual machinery required to enact it. That inconsistency supplies both the comedy and the pilot’s emotional engine.

Her dilemma is not simply “Do I like looking at men?” It is closer to: Can a feminist publication use erotic imagery without betraying its politics? Can sexual pleasure be treated as part of women’s autonomy rather than as a distraction from serious issues? And what happens when a woman has to exercise the visual power that popular culture has traditionally granted to men?

3. It reverses the usual gaze

Much of screen history is organized around men looking at women. In entertainment-industry stories, that visual hierarchy often overlaps with a workplace hierarchy: male executives, directors, or casting agents assess women’s bodies, while women audition for approval.

Minx flips that arrangement. Men arrive at the office, undress, pose, and compete for the approval of women who occupy editorial and evaluative positions. The women are not passive objects in a story about male desire. They are the people commissioning, selecting, and interpreting the image.

This is the scene’s clearest political intervention. It treats women as independent sexual subjects and makes male bodies available for women’s consideration. The result is not a simple exchange of roles so much as a demonstration that the old arrangement was never inevitable.

The sequence also connects to the mission historically associated with Playgirl: reversing the conventional voyeuristic relationship and recognizing that women can be active consumers of sexual imagery. The show turns that idea into a workplace procedure rather than a seduction scene.

That procedure matters. Because the men are auditioning for a job, their bodies are connected to labor, performance, and consent. The scene asks viewers to notice not only who is being looked at, but who controls the conditions of looking.

4. The nudity becomes office comedy

The montage is funny because the characters gradually respond to an extraordinary television image as if it were a routine office assignment. Models try different poses and presentation styles. Staff members sort through alternatives. Joyce’s unease sits beside her colleagues’ increasingly practical professionalism.

The comedy comes from the mismatch between the audience’s expectation that nudity should be shocking or erotic and the characters’ bureaucratic response to it. A body is present, but the immediate question is whether the body works for the issue’s concept.

That is also why the scene does not play like a traditional sex scene. Its rhythm is closer to a workplace montage: applicants appear, the decision-makers compare them, and the project moves toward a production choice. The music helps strip away the ominous or voyeuristic tone often attached to onscreen male nudity.

Director and producer Paul Feig described the show’s repeated nudity as becoming “sterile” in the sense that constant exposure removes some of its conventional titillating force. The word should not be understood to mean that the bodies are meaningless. Rather, the show wants sexual display to stop monopolizing the scene’s meaning. Character, power, embarrassment, labor, and editorial judgment remain more important than the novelty of seeing a penis onscreen.

5. It makes representation itself part of the story

Minx is a series about producing media that changes who gets represented as a sexual subject. The pilot’s montage performs the same argument that the fictional magazine is supposed to make: male bodies can be looked at, evaluated, stylized, and sold to women.

That makes the sequence meta-textual. The show is not only depicting the creation of a magazine; it is staging a television version of the magazine’s central reversal. Viewers are placed in a position that screen culture has more often assigned to men.

Rapoport said that test audiences, particularly young women, experienced the sequence as empowering because it offered a chance to reverse a familiar viewing arrangement. That response helps explain why the scene became such a prominent talking point. For some viewers, the point was not simply access to nudity but the recognition that women’s visual pleasure could be treated as ordinary, public, and legitimate.

Still, the scene should not be treated as proof that television has achieved gender parity. It is a reversal, not a complete solution. The series foregrounds male genital display more heavily than an equivalent amount of female genital representation, and the montage’s novelty is also part of its commercial design. It can be both a feminist intervention and a calculated attention-getter.

The strongest reading holds those ideas together. Minx intentionally makes male nudity varied, visible, and ordinary while using that visibility to question who is normally looked at and who is normally allowed to look. Its politics do not disappear because the scene is entertaining, and its commercial calculation does not disappear because the scene has political meaning.

How the scene was produced

Rapoport has said that the montage appeared in the first outline she wrote for the series. HBO Max and the producers did not push back against showing the bodies, but the sequence still required careful production planning.

Vanity Fair’s production reporting noted that the shoot used a closed set and intimacy coordinator Liz LaMura. LaMura treated the models’ presentations as audition performances, discussing possible poses or “tricks” with each participant and establishing a break signal. Those details are not merely behind-the-scenes trivia. They show how a scene about reversing the casting-couch dynamic had to be made with explicit attention to participants’ boundaries and comfort.

The montage was filmed in downtown Los Angeles during the COVID-19 period and was moved to the end of the shooting day. Rapoport described time pressure and concern about the participants’ comfort. The closed set, intimacy coordination, and break procedure provided structure for a scene that could otherwise have been treated casually because its onscreen tone is comic.

Were the bodies real?

Available production reporting does not support the claim that every penis shown throughout Minx was real. Rapoport said that most of the penises in season one were real and that only four prosthetics were used across the season. Prosthetics were useful when anatomy needed to change from shot to shot or when a particular visual function required a controlled result.

The pilot audition montage is generally reported as using the performers’ own bodies. That should be kept distinct from later scenes in the series that required prosthetics. “Most were real” is the accurate broad production description; it is not a basis for claiming that every visible body in every episode was unaltered.

The real magazine history behind the fictional Minx

The magazine inside the show is fictional and is not a direct dramatization of one real publication. Its editorial world is instead assembled from the history of 1970s women’s erotic magazines, including Playgirl and Viva.

Rapoport researched old issues, oral histories, and archival material. That research matters because it places the centerfold in a broader media history. Women’s erotic magazines could combine male models with interviews, health information, cultural writing, and arguments about women’s sexual agency. The apparent contradiction between feminist content and commercial erotic imagery was not invented for the show; it was part of the historical problem the show is examining.

Seen in that context, the pilot montage is not adequately summarized as “Minx has lots of penises.” The bodies belong to an imagined editorial workflow modeled on a real period when pornography, feminism, commerce, and workplace politics were already entangled.

Why the scene remains controversial

The sequence was designed to challenge the usual distribution of sexual visibility, but a reversal can still be packaged as spectacle. The show’s marketing value comes partly from the fact that full-frontal male nudity remains unusual on mainstream television. That novelty can draw attention even when the narrative is trying to make the image ordinary.

There is also a difference between changing who is displayed and changing the power relations around display. The audition gives women authority within the scene, but the models are still being assessed for their commercial usefulness. The sequence therefore contains a productive tension: it treats the men as sexual subjects while also showing how bodies become media products.

That tension is what makes the montage more interesting than a simple “female gaze” reversal. The staff is not only looking; it is selecting, branding, and preparing to sell. Joyce’s discomfort reflects the political complications of turning liberation into a publication with deadlines, advertisers, market expectations, and a centerfold requirement.

Where to watch the pilot

Minx ran for two seasons before Starz canceled the series in January 2024. Streaming rights change frequently and differ by country. A U.S. availability check dated June 24, 2026 listed the series through Netflix, Netflix Standard with Ads, MovieSphere+ Amazon Channel, and Spectrum On Demand, with purchase options including Amazon Video, Fandango at Home, and Apple TV Store. Confirm the listing in your market before subscribing or buying; availability may have changed.

If you want to watch the Minx pilot, check the current listing for your country rather than assuming that a service offering season one in the United States also carries it elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the full-frontal montage in the Minx pilot a sex scene?

No. The scene is framed as a centerfold audition. The men are prospective models, and the staff is evaluating them for a magazine spread. Its workplace structure and editing are central to the joke and to the show’s argument about who gets to look.

What is the purpose of the montage in Minx?

It serves several purposes at once: it explains the magazine’s premise, advances Joyce’s character arc, reverses the conventional gendered gaze, turns nudity into workplace comedy, and makes the production of sexual representation part of the subject.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Were the penises in Minx real?

Production reporting says most of the penises in season one were real, while four prosthetics were used across the season for specific visual or continuity needs. The pilot montage is generally reported as using the performers’ own bodies, but it is inaccurate to say every visible penis throughout the series was real.

Was Minx based on Playgirl?

The fictional magazine is not a direct dramatization of Playgirl, but creator Ellen Rapoport researched Playgirl, Viva, oral histories, and archival material. Those real women’s erotic magazines helped shape the show’s combination of male centerfolds, feminist subjects, and commercial publishing pressures.

The Bottom Line

The pilot’s full-frontal montage works because it is simultaneously plot, character development, political reversal, workplace comedy, and production experiment. It shows what Minx is making, what Joyce has yet to understand, and what the series wants to change about television’s usual sexual gaze—without proving that a single reversal is the same thing as gender equality.
