Marvel’s December 2025 character teaser explicitly confirmed that “Steve Rogers will return in Avengers: Doomsday,” ending years of reports and speculation. The full trailer, released on July 20, 2026, then showed Rogers reuniting with Thor and taking hold of Mjölnir.
What the footage does not explain is how Steve returns after Avengers: Endgame, whether this is the same Steve Rogers who lived out his life with Peggy Carter, or how large Evans’s role will be. The trailer confirms the character’s return, but not every detail of the story behind it.
The official confirmation: Steve Rogers is back
The distinction between rumor and confirmation matters here. Chris Evans’s involvement in Avengers: Doomsday had been widely discussed before Marvel showed anything official, but the December 18, 2025 teaser removed the ambiguity. The footage ends with on-screen text stating that Steve Rogers will return in Avengers: Doomsday.
Marvel’s official teaser announcement on December 23 also described the footage as revealing Evans’s return as Steve Rogers. Disney’s official movie page subsequently continued to feature the film’s promotional material, including imagery identified as Steve Rogers/Captain America played by Chris Evans.

So the confirmed news is not merely that Evans may appear, or that an actor who resembles him was seen in promotional footage. The officially released material identifies the returning character as Steve Rogers, the original Captain America.
What happens in the Chris Evans teaser?
The first official teaser is intentionally more mysterious than action-focused. It shows Steve Rogers arriving at a home with a distinctly 1950s-style appearance. He puts away his Captain America uniform and is shown holding a baby before the confirmation of his return appears.
The imagery strongly recalls the ending Steve chose in Avengers: Endgame. After returning the Infinity Stones, Rogers went back in time and apparently lived a private life with Peggy Carter before eventually returning as an elderly man to pass his shield to Sam Wilson. The new teaser appears designed to connect with that unresolved part of Steve’s story, but it does not provide a literal explanation of what viewers are seeing.

- the scene is partly or entirely a misdirection.
Those possibilities remain interpretations, not confirmed plot facts. Marvel has confirmed Steve’s return; it has not yet confirmed the mechanics of that return.
The full trailer brings Steve together with Thor
The first full trailer, released publicly on July 20, 2026, gives the return more dramatic context. It shows Thor reuniting with Steve Rogers as multiple hero groups are drawn into the same conflict. The trailer also includes Thor presenting Mjölnir to Rogers.

The moment is a deliberate callback to Avengers: Endgame, when Captain America proved himself worthy of Thor’s hammer during the battle against Thanos. That visual connection is likely to be one of the film’s most discussed images, but it is important not to overread it. The footage does not prove that Steve has permanently reclaimed the Captain America identity, returned to active service full-time, or taken the shield back from Sam Wilson.
Marvel’s promotional material continues to identify Sam Wilson as Captain America. The available footage therefore presents two important facts at once: Steve Rogers is returning, and Sam Wilson remains the current Captain America in the film’s published character context.

Doctor Doom is the threat uniting the heroes
The trailer frames Robert Downey Jr.’s Victor von Doom, or Doctor Doom, as the principal visible threat. Doom is shown confronting Thor, while the larger story appears to involve an effort to bring separated heroes and teams together against a multiversal crisis.
The trailer keeps the precise plot deliberately limited. It does not reveal the full nature of Doom’s plan, the exact rules governing the film’s universes, or the reason each group becomes involved. What it does establish is the scale of the crossover and the need for cooperation among characters who have not previously shared a conventional Avengers story.
Which Marvel teams appear in the trailer?
Avengers: Doomsday is being presented as a broad Phase Six and multiverse crossover rather than a story centered only on the original Avengers. The released trailer and official promotional material bring together characters associated with several corners of Marvel’s screen history.

Why Steve Rogers’ return matters after Endgame
Steve’s last major story in Endgame was structured as a retirement. He handed the shield to Sam Wilson and chose a personal life over continued superhero work. Bringing him back creates an immediate story question: is Doomsday reversing that ending, or is it using the multiverse to place a different version of Steve in a new crisis?
The released footage favors the second question without answering it. The 1950s-style home and baby imagery point toward Steve’s post-Endgame life, while the Thor reunion and Mjölnir scene place him back in the kind of large-scale conflict from which he had supposedly stepped away.
That tension may be central to the character’s role. Steve could be returning as a retired hero pulled into an emergency, as a version displaced from another timeline, or as a figure whose personal ending has been interrupted. At this stage, the responsible conclusion is narrower: the trailers position Steve directly within the film’s ensemble conflict, but they do not disclose the explanation.
Is Chris Evans replacing Sam Wilson as Captain America?
Nothing officially released so far confirms that. The returning character is identified as Steve Rogers, while official promotional material continues to identify Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson as Captain America.

The Mjölnir sequence also should not be confused with a formal transfer of the shield or title. Steve’s ability to lift the hammer recalls his established worthiness, but it does not by itself say who holds the Captain America mantle in the film. Until Marvel provides more story information, it is more accurate to describe this as Steve Rogers’s return—not as Sam Wilson’s replacement.

What remains unknown about Evans’ role?
The trailers do not establish whether Evans has a lead-sized role throughout the film or a substantial but limited appearance. His explicit confirmation is significant, but screen time and narrative importance cannot be inferred from the fact that he appears in a teaser and the full trailer.
Marvel also has not confirmed whether the baby seen in the first teaser is connected to the main timeline, another timeline, or a deliberately misleading piece of imagery. Nor has it explained whether the Steve shown in the film is the same individual who lived through the conclusion of Endgame.
