The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner identified the cause of death for filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner and his wife, photographer-producer Michele Singer Reiner, as “multiple sharp-force injuries.” The department classified the manner of death for both as homicide.
The findings followed the couple’s discovery at their Brentwood home in Los Angeles on December 14, 2025. The official terminology does not provide a complete account of the injuries, and the full autopsy reports and other case records were later placed under a court-ordered security hold.
What the medical examiner officially reported
The relevant authority is the County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner, not simply a generic “coroner’s office.” Its publicly released records listed the cause of death for both Robert Reiner and Michele Reiner as multiple sharp-force injuries and the manner of death as homicide.
“Multiple sharp-force injuries” is the medical examiner’s official wording. News coverage has described the deaths as fatal stabbings, but the public medical-examiner finding should not be expanded into unsupported anatomical details. The released wording does not, by itself, establish the full injury pattern, the sequence of events, or what happened immediately before the deaths.

When Rob and Michele Reiner were found
The couple were found dead at their home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles on December 14, 2025. The deaths were investigated as an apparent homicide, and subsequent official and law-enforcement descriptions connected the case to fatal sharp-force injuries.
The medical examiner’s cause-and-manner finding was reported publicly in the days that followed. The finding that the deaths were homicides is a classification used in death-investigation records. It is separate from the criminal court’s eventual decision about who is legally responsible.
Why the full autopsy reports are not available
On December 29, 2025, the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner said that the Los Angeles Police Department had obtained a court order placing a security hold on the Reiner case files. The department identified the files by Medical Examiner case numbers 2025-19480 and 2025-19481, corresponding to Robert and Michele Reiner.

The department said the cause and manner of death had previously been released, but that information was no longer publicly displayed after the order. It also said that no other case information or records—including the Medical Examiner reports—could be released or posted until further notice.

Accordingly, references to the “released autopsy” or claims that the full toxicology findings are public would be inaccurate based on the information available in this case.

What prosecutors allege about Nick Reiner
On December 16, 2025, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced that Nick Reiner, 32, had been charged in connection with the deaths. The charging announcement described two counts of murder, a multiple-murder special-circumstance allegation, and an allegation that he personally used a knife.
The District Attorney’s Office explicitly stated that the charges were allegations and that Nick Reiner was presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court. The charging document’s allegations should therefore not be presented as an established account of what happened.
The medical examiner’s designation of homicide does not change that legal standard. In a death investigation, homicide describes the manner in which a death occurred under the medical examiner’s classification system. It is not itself a criminal conviction and does not determine whether a particular defendant is guilty.
