The laptop and receiver must be on the same Wi-Fi network, and Chrome must be installed and up to date.
There is one important distinction: Chrome can cast from a laptop, but the Google Home app cannot set up a Chromecast from a computer. Initial setup normally requires a compatible Android phone or tablet, or an iPhone or iPad.
What you need
- A Chromecast, Chromecast with Google TV, Chromecast Ultra, Google TV Streamer (4K), or television with Google Cast built in.
- A laptop or desktop running Google Chrome on Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, or Linux.
- The latest available version of Chrome.
- A reliable Wi-Fi connection for both the laptop and streaming device.
- The laptop and receiver connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
- An HDMI-equipped television or display and a power connection for a standalone Chromecast or Google TV Streamer.
There is no special laptop hardware requirement merely to install Chrome or use its Cast menu. However, video quality and smoothness can depend on the computer’s processor, graphics hardware, operating-system drivers, and Wi-Fi quality. An older laptop may cast simple webpages or slideshows well but struggle with high-resolution video.
If you are buying a new receiver, Google TV Streamer (4K) is Google’s current successor to Chromecast. It supports laptop casting and adds features such as 4K video, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, 32 GB of storage, 4 GB of memory, and built-in Ethernet. Those features are not required for ordinary Chrome tab casting, and owners of a working compatible Chromecast do not need to replace it just to cast from a laptop.

Set up the Chromecast before using the laptop
A Chromecast or Google TV Streamer must be configured before Chrome can discover it. Google Home setup is performed on a mobile device, not on a computer.
Setup steps
- Plug the Chromecast or Google TV Streamer into an HDMI port on the television or display.
- Switch the television to the HDMI input used by the device.
- Connect the streaming device to power using the supplied or otherwise appropriate power equipment.
- Install or open the Google Home app on a compatible phone or tablet.
- Use the app’s device-add flow to select your home and find the streaming device.
- Scan the on-screen QR code or enter the setup code manually when prompted.
- Connect the device to your home Wi-Fi network and finish the setup.
Google’s current mobile requirements specify an Android phone or tablet running Android 9 or later, or an iPhone or iPad running iOS 17 or later. A Google Account and home Wi-Fi are also required. Once setup is complete, leave the television and streaming device powered on or available so the laptop can find it.
Important: you cannot fully set up a Chromecast by installing Google Home on a laptop. Google Home is not used for computer-based setup.
Cast a Chrome tab from the laptop
Tab casting is usually the best option for watching a documentary, video webpage, slideshow, or other browser content with its sound coming through the television.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Google Chrome on the laptop.
- Open the webpage or web-based video you want to display.
- Select the three-dot More menu in the upper-right corner of Chrome.
- Choose Cast, save, and share > Cast….
- Select the Chromecast, Google TV Streamer, or Google Cast television.
Chrome displays the selected tab on the television while keeping it open on the laptop. Video and images appear on both screens, but the tab’s sound normally plays through the TV. Audio from other Chrome tabs and from other laptop applications continues to play through the laptop.

To stop casting, select the Cast icon near the right side of Chrome’s address bar and choose Stop casting.
Use a website’s built-in Cast button when available
Some video websites display their own Cast button inside the media player. When available, this direct-cast option is different from casting the entire Chrome tab: the receiver may handle the stream more efficiently, allowing the laptop to act mainly as a controller. The exact behavior depends on the website and the video service.
If a site’s player has a Cast button, try it first. If it is absent or does not work, use Chrome’s Cast… menu to cast the tab.

- Open Chrome.

- Choose the Chromecast or other Google Cast receiver.

Audio warning: Google warns that screen casting may leave audio playing through the computer rather than the TV. If your main goal is to hear a video through the television, cast the Chrome tab instead of the whole screen.
Cast a video, audio file, or image stored on the laptop
Chrome can open many local files in a browser tab, after which the tab can be cast in the normal way.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Chrome.
- Drag the local video, audio file, or image into a new Chrome tab. You can also use your operating system’s open-file command and choose Chrome.
- With the file visible or playing in Chrome, open More > Cast, save, and share > Cast….
- Select the receiver.
This can work well for a downloaded documentary, photograph, presentation, or audio recording. It is not a guarantee that every codec, protected file, plugin, or media format will play correctly. Some older plugins, including Silverlight, QuickTime, and VLC-based browser playback, do not work with ordinary Chrome casting. If the file does not play in Chrome itself, Chrome cannot reliably cast it as a tab.
Which method should you use?
| What you want to do | Best method | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Watch a webpage or documentary in Chrome | Cast the tab | Usually the simplest option, with tab audio sent to the TV. |
| Use a website’s supported video player | Use the player’s Cast button | The receiver may stream the content more efficiently. |
| Show a presentation, desktop app, or several windows | Cast the screen | The TV mirrors the laptop; audio may remain on the computer. |
| Display a downloaded image or media file | Open it in Chrome, then cast the tab | Success depends on Chrome’s ability to open and play the file. |
If the Chromecast does not appear
Work through these checks in order. Do not factory-reset the device until the simpler network and software checks have failed.
- Confirm that the receiver is powered on. Check that the TV is on the correct HDMI input and that the Chromecast or Google TV Streamer has completed setup.
- Check the Wi-Fi network. The laptop and receiver must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. A laptop on one network and a Chromecast on another will generally not work through Chrome’s Cast menu.
- Check guest-network and isolation settings. Guest Wi-Fi, client isolation, enterprise security controls, and similar restrictions can prevent devices from discovering one another even when the network names appear similar.
- Update Chrome. Enter
chrome://chromein Chrome’s address bar and apply any available update. Restart Chrome afterward. - Disconnect a VPN or proxy temporarily. Google identifies VPNs and proxies as possible causes of failed communication between the laptop and streaming device.
- Look for the Cast command in Chrome’s overflow menu. If the Cast button is not on the toolbar, open More > Cast, save, and share > Cast…. Chrome may also allow the button to be pinned back to the toolbar.
- Restart Chrome and the laptop. This can clear a temporary discovery or browser-process problem.
- Reboot the streaming device. Disconnect its power briefly, reconnect it, and wait for it to start up completely.
- Restart the router. Do this if the receiver remains invisible after confirming the network and restarting both devices.
- Check macOS permissions. On macOS 15 or later, Chrome may need the required system access before casting works. Review macOS privacy and security permissions for Chrome if the receiver is set up and on the same network but remains undiscoverable.
- Factory-reset only as a last resort. Resetting erases the streaming device’s configuration, so it must be set up again through Google Home.
Why casting may be slow, blurry, or interrupted
Discovery and playback are separate problems. A receiver can appear in Chrome but still deliver poor video if the Wi-Fi signal is weak or the laptop cannot process the page smoothly.

- Move the router or streaming device to improve the Wi-Fi signal where appropriate.
- Reduce other high-bandwidth activity on the network, such as large downloads or multiple simultaneous streams.
- Close unnecessary laptop applications and browser tabs if the computer is under heavy load.
- Try the website’s built-in Cast button instead of mirroring a tab when the site supports it.
- Use tab casting rather than screen casting for video when TV audio and smoother playback are important.
- Check whether the laptop’s operating system, graphics drivers, or browser installation are unusually old.
A new router or mesh system is not the first fix for a missing Cast device. Start with the same-network, VPN/proxy, Chrome-update, reboot, and setup checks. New Wi-Fi equipment becomes more reasonable only when the broader home network is demonstrably weak or unreliable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo you need a new Chromecast?
Not necessarily. Google’s current Chrome documentation continues to support Chromecast, Chromecast Ultra, Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV Streamer (4K), and televisions with Google Cast. An older compatible Chromecast that is already set up and visible on the network may be all you need for laptop casting.
For a new purchase, Google TV Streamer (4K) is the current Chromecast successor. It may make sense if you want a current Google streaming device, 4K output, more storage, built-in Ethernet, or the Google TV interface. It is not a requirement for casting a Chrome tab, and buying one will not by itself solve a laptop that is connected to the wrong Wi-Fi network or blocked by a VPN.
If the device is missing a cable, a compatible HDMI cable may be needed for the television connection. That is an accessory for a missing or damaged cable, not something every laptop owner needs to purchase. A replacement voice remote can also help if the existing Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer remote is lost, but a remote is generally not required to cast from a laptop after the receiver has been configured.
Privacy and practical viewing tips
- Use tab casting when you want to show only one webpage rather than everything on the laptop.
- Close private tabs and hide notifications before using screen casting.
- Keep the laptop awake if the cast depends on a live Chrome tab; closing the lid or ending the browser session can interrupt some casting workflows.
- For long documentary viewing, use a wired Ethernet connection on a Google TV Streamer when available, or place the receiver where Wi-Fi is strong.
- Remember that copyright restrictions, website policies, DRM, and unsupported formats can prevent particular videos from casting even when the Chromecast itself is working.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I set up a Chromecast using only my laptop?
No. Google Home setup is performed on a compatible Android or iOS mobile device, not on a computer. After setup is complete, you can cast from Chrome on the laptop.
Can I cast from a laptop without Chrome?
The documented laptop method uses Google Chrome. Install and update Chrome on Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, or Linux, then use its Cast menu.

Why does the video sound come from my laptop instead of the TV?
You may be casting the entire screen rather than a Chrome tab. Google notes that screen casting can leave audio on the computer. Stop casting and choose the specific tab, or use the video player’s own Cast button.
Do I need Google TV Streamer if I already have a Chromecast?
Usually not. Compatible Chromecast models remain supported by Chrome’s Cast feature. Google TV Streamer is the current successor and may be worthwhile for new buyers or for its additional features, but it is not required for ordinary laptop casting.
Can I cast a downloaded movie from my laptop?
Often, yes. Open the file in a Chrome tab and cast that tab. Playback is not guaranteed for every codec, protected file, plugin, or media type.
The Bottom Line
For most laptop viewing, open Chrome, choose More > Cast, save, and share > Cast…, and select the receiver. Choose Cast screen only when you need the whole desktop. If the device is missing, check setup, same-network Wi-Fi, Chrome updates, VPNs, permissions, and reboots before resetting or replacing anything.
