Resident Alien was filmed mainly in British Columbia, Canada—not Colorado. Vancouver served as the production base and housed many of the show’s recurring interior sets, while the historic town of Ladysmith on Vancouver Island stood in for downtown Patience, the fictional Colorado community where much of the story unfolds. The production also used Britannia Beach, Minaty Bay, Britannia Mines, and mountain locations near Pemberton for its shoreline and alpine scenery.
The short answer: British Columbia plays Colorado
Resident Alien is set in the fictional town of Patience, Colorado, but Colorado was not the series’ primary filming location. Location manager Ken Brooker told SYFY WIRE that approximately 90 percent of the production was based in Vancouver. The rest of the visual geography came from locations across British Columbia, including Vancouver Island and the Sea-to-Sky region.
The show’s Colorado look is therefore a carefully assembled combination of:
- Vancouver soundstages for recurring homes, businesses, offices, and other interiors;
- Ladysmith for the connected streets and historic buildings of Patience;
- Britannia Beach and Howe Sound for the exterior of Harry Vanderspeigle’s cabin;
- Rainbow Mountain and the Pemberton Ice Cap for high-altitude and glacier imagery; and
- Vancouver-area landmarks that doubled for New York City in selected episodes.
Ladysmith, Vancouver Island: the real-world Patience
When viewers see the streets of Patience, they are most often looking at Ladysmith, a historic community on Vancouver Island. The production dressed approximately three or four blocks of the town’s historic downtown for the series. Its early-20th-century architecture and links to the region’s mining history made it a convincing match for the fictional Colorado settlement.

Downtown Ladysmith’s compact layout was especially useful for the production. Patience’s town hall, clinic, and the fictional bar called The 59 needed to seem close enough to one another to form a believable small-town center. Rather than filming isolated buildings in unrelated places, the production could connect these locations visually within Ladysmith’s historic core.
Reported filming records identify 1st Avenue and other downtown Ladysmith streets as locations used by the show. A Ladysmith council record also documents production planning and proposed street closures connected with filming. The town scenes were generally shot during concentrated, multi-day periods after the production dressed the relevant streets and buildings.
| On screen | Real-world filming location |
|---|---|
| Patience downtown and main-street scenes | Ladysmith, Vancouver Island, British Columbia |
| Patience town hall, clinic, and The 59 surroundings | Historic downtown Ladysmith exteriors and dressed locations |
| Recurring interior locations | Vancouver-area soundstages, not necessarily the real Ladysmith buildings |
That distinction matters: Ladysmith supplied much of the town’s exterior identity, but it does not mean that every room associated with Patience was filmed inside a real Ladysmith building.
Where was Harry’s cabin filmed?
Harry Vanderspeigle’s cabin is one of the show’s most recognizable locations, but it is not a single, fully practical building. The production combined an exterior facade at Britannia Beach with a separate interior set in Vancouver.

The cabin exterior was built at Britannia Beach, on the shore of Howe Sound. Howe Sound is an inlet of the Pacific Ocean, not a Colorado mountain lake. From the chosen camera angles, however, the water and surrounding mountains can convincingly resemble an isolated alpine lake, allowing the series to sell Harry’s remote “lakeside” home.
This is why descriptions that simply call the location a lake can be misleading. The most accurate explanation is that Harry’s cabin exterior was filmed beside Howe Sound, whose landscape was presented as part of fictional Colorado.

The cabin interior: a Vancouver soundstage
The inside of the cabin was constructed on a Vancouver soundstage. Production designer Michael Joy explained that the pilot included a physical confrontation involving an alien approximately eight feet tall. Building the interior on a controlled stage gave the production more room and flexibility for the action, camera movement, lighting, and effects than an existing cabin would have provided.
The cabin is consequently a good example of the show’s overall method: real British Columbia landscapes establish the world, while purpose-built sets provide continuity and controlled environments for recurring scenes.
Britannia Mines and Minaty Bay in season 4
The Britannia-area locations remained part of the show’s visual world in season 4. Official regional filming notices document production activity by GEP Resident Inc. at Britannia Mines and Minaty Bay in February and March 2025. One February notice described filming at the Britannia Mine Museum area followed by Minaty Bay, while a March notice confirmed another filming day at Britannia Mines and Minaty Bay.
Those notices confirm that the locations were used during the later production, but they do not identify every scene filmed there. It is therefore safer to describe Britannia Mines and Minaty Bay as confirmed season 4 filming areas rather than assign every recognizable shot to one of them.
Britannia Mine Museum is a public attraction, but filming areas, private property, active production zones, and surrounding natural areas may have different access rules. Visitors should check current opening information and restrictions rather than assume that a recognizable filming position can be entered.
The mountains and glacier scenes
The snowy peaks and glacier imagery in Resident Alien came from British Columbia’s mountainous Sea-to-Sky region. Brooker identified Rainbow Mountain and the Pemberton Ice Cap as locations used for glacier or high-mountain sequences.

These were not ordinary roadside shoots. The production required helicopter access to transport people and equipment to the alpine locations. The practical mountain photography was also combined with visual effects, studio work, and other British Columbia landscapes.
As a result, a mountain sequence should not automatically be read as one continuous real location. A single scene can combine footage from more than one British Columbia site with effects and controlled studio material. The reliable conclusion is that the series’ high-altitude scenery was sourced from multiple locations in the province.
Which interiors were filmed on sets?
Many of the places that appear to be real Colorado buildings were built across two Canadian soundstages. According to production designer Michael Joy, the recurring sets included:
- Dan’s Diner;
- the mayor’s office;
- the Patience police station;
- D’Arcy and Asta’s apartment;
- Harry’s cabin interior;
- the Hawthorne family home; and
- the bar, including the fictional The 59 environment.
Using soundstages allowed the production to keep recurring rooms consistent across episodes and seasons. It also made it easier to stage the show’s physical comedy, alien effects, stunts, and scenes involving multiple characters without being limited by the dimensions or permissions of a real building.

This studio work explains why the series can move so smoothly between an apparently remote Colorado town and elaborate interiors without the geography always corresponding to a real building in one location.
Where were the New York scenes filmed?
Resident Alien also uses Vancouver and nearby locations to represent New York City. Reported examples include:
Rank #4
- The Polygon Gallery in North Vancouver, used as the art gallery where Harry and Isabelle meet;
- the Rogers Building at 470 Granville Street, which doubled for the Galvan Powell Group building; and
- the Vancouver Art Gallery, which represented the New York Public Library.
Specialist location guides also identify Pizza 2001 on West Pender Street as the pizzeria used for a New York sequence and Capilano River Regional Park in North Vancouver as the setting for a wooded pedestrian bridge.
The last two identifications come from specialist location research rather than the show’s official production interviews. They are useful reported scene matches, but they should not be treated as a complete or official list of every location used for the New York material.

Available production records list season 4 filming from December 2, 2024, through March 31, 2025. USA Network confirmed in December 2024 that season 4 had entered production and highlighted the return of familiar locations including Harry’s cabin and Dan’s diner. Regional notices independently corroborated late-February and March 2025 filming around Britannia Mines and Minaty Bay.
Season 4 was announced by USA Network in July 2025 as the show’s fourth and final season. That makes the complete location picture a four-season one: the answer is not limited to the Vancouver and Ladysmith work associated with the early episodes.
A practical filming-location guide
| Resident Alien location | British Columbia counterpart | What viewers should know |
|---|---|---|
| Patience downtown and main street | Ladysmith, Vancouver Island | The town’s historic core was dressed to represent fictional Patience. |
| Harry’s cabin exterior | Britannia Beach beside Howe Sound | The shoreline is an ocean inlet presented as a mountain lake. |
| Harry’s cabin interior | Vancouver soundstage | The interior was purpose-built, partly to accommodate large-scale action. |
| Season 4 Britannia-area sequences | Minaty Bay and Britannia Mines | Confirmed by regional filming notices; individual scenes are not all identified. |
| Glacier and high-mountain scenes | Rainbow Mountain and Pemberton Ice Cap | Specialized helicopter-supported mountain filming. |

| New York pizzeria and wooded bridge | Pizza 2001 and Capilano River Regional Park | Specialist location-guide identifications, not a complete official list. |
Can you visit the filming locations?
Some locations are easier to visit than others. Ladysmith’s historic downtown consists of public streets and businesses, although individual interiors, filming setups, closures, and access arrangements can change. Britannia Mine Museum is a public attraction, but that does not guarantee access to every nearby filming position or to private production areas. Mountain locations such as Rainbow Mountain and the Pemberton Ice Cap are remote and may require serious backcountry planning, permits, specialized transport, and appropriate experience.
A responsible location trip should therefore distinguish between:
- public streets and attractions, where ordinary visitor rules apply;
- private buildings or businesses, which require permission;
- temporary filming areas, which may be closed during production; and
- remote alpine terrain, where access and safety requirements are substantially more demanding.
For most fans, Ladysmith offers the clearest and most practical way to see the townscape that became Patience. Britannia Mine Museum and the Britannia Beach area provide a more specialized way to explore the landscape associated with Harry’s cabin and later filming, subject to current access rules.
