Yes—Joel Miller is dead in the present-day storyline of HBO’s The Last of Us. Abby Anderson kills him in Season 2, Episode 2, “Through the Valley,” after Joel and Tommy rescue her from infected. The show does not later reveal that he survived. However, Joel is not absent from the rest of the season: flashbacks, memories, and emotionally important scenes continue to develop his relationship with Ellie.
How Joel dies in The Last of Us Season 2
Five years after the events of Season 1, Joel and Ellie are living in Jackson—but their relationship is no longer as close as it once was. Joel’s lie about what happened at the Firefly hospital has created a deep divide between them. Ellie suspects that he kept the truth from her, while Joel is struggling to preserve a bond that has already been damaged by secrecy and guilt.
That unresolved tension is the emotional backdrop to Joel’s death. He is not killed while enjoying a settled, happy life with Ellie. Instead, the series establishes that they love each other while remaining estranged and unable to repair what happened between them.

In “Through the Valley,” Joel and Tommy save Abby from a mass of infected. They take her to a nearby shelter, not knowing that Abby has been searching for Joel. She is connected to the people affected by Joel’s actions at the Firefly hospital, including her father, the surgeon Joel killed while rescuing Ellie at the end of Season 1.
Abby attacks Joel with a golf club. Ellie reaches the room in time to see Joel alive but badly injured, and she is prevented from saving him. Abby then kills him while Ellie is forced to watch.
The scene is meant to be final, not a cliffhanger suggesting a hidden escape. HBO’s official companion material describes the moment as the season’s major turning point, and the official companion-podcast listing refers directly to the “aftermath of Joel’s death” in the following episode.
Is Joel secretly alive?
No. There is no credible evidence in the released television story that Joel secretly survived. The plot treats his death as an irreversible event. Ellie mourns him, visits his grave, takes possession of his gun, and begins pursuing Abby. Joel’s death also changes Tommy, Maria, Jackson, and Abby.

Those appearances take place in the past. They are flashbacks that fill in the years between the first season and Joel’s murder, or scenes that explore Ellie’s memories and grief. They do not show Joel escaping the attack or returning to the present-day timeline.

Why the show keeps showing Joel after his death
Flashbacks reveal the relationship Ellie lost
Joel’s death creates a question that the season cannot answer through present-day scenes: what exactly did Ellie lose? The flashbacks provide that answer gradually. They show affection, shared experiences, growing mistrust, and the moments in which Ellie began trying to understand—or forgive—Joel.
“The Price” is particularly important because it revisits earlier experiences in Joel and Ellie’s relationship, including birthday memories and the deterioration of their trust. The episode was placed late in the season so the audience would first feel Joel’s absence and only then receive more context for the life they shared.

The porch conversation changes the meaning of Joel’s final days
The most significant posthumous Joel scene is the final porch conversation between Joel and Ellie. It takes place before his murder, but the audience sees it after Joel is already gone.
That placement gives the scene its force. Ellie had not completely forgiven Joel, but she had begun moving toward forgiveness. Joel’s admission and Ellie’s response suggest that their relationship might have had a future if he had lived. His death turns that possibility into an unresolved memory.
The porch scene does not undo the murder, and it is not evidence that Joel is alive. Instead, it gives Ellie—and the viewer—a final hopeful memory that exists alongside the anger, betrayal, and violence between them.
Joel survives through the consequences of his choices
Joel remains central because the season is built around the consequences of what he did. Ellie remembers him as both a loving father figure and the person whose decisions destroyed her chance to choose what happened to her. Abby remembers him as the man responsible for her father’s death. Tommy sees him as his brother and wants revenge.
These versions of Joel are not interchangeable. The conflict between them is part of what makes the story more complicated than a simple revenge plot. Joel is physically absent, but his choices continue to determine what the living characters do next.
Does Joel appear in the game after he dies?
Yes. Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II follows the same broad structure. Abby kills Joel early in the story, and the game then uses flashbacks to continue exploring Joel and Ellie’s relationship.
Those flashbacks include the museum sequence and other moments surrounding their growing estrangement. They do more than provide nostalgic scenes: they explain the emotional history behind Ellie’s anger, grief, and eventual struggle to decide what Joel’s memory means to her.

The television adaptation changes the timing, staging, and some surrounding details, so the game should not be treated as proof of an unannounced television plot point. But it establishes the source story’s central idea: Joel’s death starts the revenge narrative, while the flashbacks keep developing the relationship at the heart of it.
Game spoiler: Readers who want to compare the source material can play The Last of Us Part II Remastered on PS5. It contains the sequel’s main story and additional content, but it also contains major spoilers for Joel’s death and the events that follow.

HBO renewed The Last of Us for a third season on April 9, 2025. The renewal confirms that the television story will continue, but the official material covered here does not announce a Season 3 episode-by-episode plot or promise that Pedro Pascal will appear as Joel.
It is therefore too strong to say that Pascal is confirmed to return, that Joel will be resurrected, or that the show will definitely include a new Joel scene. Those claims are not supported by the official information reviewed for this article.
What can reasonably be inferred is narrower: the series’ existing use of nonlinear storytelling leaves room for additional material set before Joel’s death. Such material could be a flashback, a memory, or another subjective sequence. That possibility follows from Season 2’s structure and the game’s storytelling—not from a confirmed Season 3 casting announcement.

The phrase should be understood as a statement about Joel’s dramatic presence, not his physical survival. The show can continue to include:
- flashbacks set before the attack;
- Ellie’s memories of Joel;
- scenes that complete or reinterpret moments from their relationship;
- dreamlike or emotionally subjective material, if the creators choose to use it;
- the ongoing consequences of Joel’s choices for Ellie, Abby, Tommy, and the wider story.
Season 2 has already used the first three possibilities. It demonstrates that a character can remain essential to a story after death without the story pretending that the death did not happen.
Optional viewing order for new fans
Viewers who want the full story before comparing the adaptation with the game should begin with The Last of Us Part I on PS5, the ground-up remake of the first game’s single-player story, and then continue with The Last of Us Part II Remastered. This is optional for television viewers, but it provides the clearest context for Joel’s decision at the hospital and Abby’s motive in the sequel.
Both games contain major spoilers for the television adaptation, so they are best approached only after deciding whether you want to know how the story develops beyond the show.

The Bottom Line
Joel is dead in the present-day timeline of The Last of Us. Abby kills him in Season 2, Episode 2, and the story never reveals a hidden survival.
