Most of Funimation’s streaming catalog was moved to Crunchyroll, but not necessarily every title. Availability depends on licensing rights, country, language, and the individual show. This guide explains what happened to Funimation accounts, how to create or use a Crunchyroll account, how the free account and seven-day trial differ, and how to cancel billing through each payment provider.
What happened to Funimation?
Funimation’s streaming service was retired on April 2, 2024. The Funimation app and website are no longer a live subscription service, so there is no current Funimation sign-up page, Funimation free-account registration, or standalone Funimation subscription to purchase.
Crunchyroll became the current service for the combined anime streaming operation. Much of the former Funimation catalog was migrated, but Crunchyroll does not promise that every Funimation title, dub, subtitle track, digital copy, or regional version was transferred. A title can be unavailable because of territory-specific licensing, language rights, or other distribution restrictions.
In practical terms:
- You cannot start a new Funimation subscription.
- You cannot create a new Funimation-only account.
- You should use Crunchyroll to look for former Funimation shows.
- Former Funimation customers should try their old credentials on Crunchyroll.
- Current pricing, plans, promotions, and trial eligibility must be checked on the Crunchyroll checkout page because they can vary by country, platform, and date.
What happened to existing Funimation subscribers?
Eligible Funimation subscriptions were generally transitioned to Crunchyroll, with billing continuing through the relevant billing cycle. That transition was not identical for every customer: the outcome could depend on the payment provider, subscription type, country, and regional rules.

How to check a transferred subscription
- Open Crunchyroll on the web or install the Crunchyroll app on a supported device.
- Choose Log In.
- Try the email address and password previously associated with Funimation.
- After signing in, open your profile and go to Settings.
- Open Membership Info to see whether a Premium membership, renewal date, and billing arrangement appear.
If the account does not appear, check whether you used a different email address, an app-store login, or a third-party provider when you originally subscribed. Do not create multiple new accounts before checking your old email receipts; doing so can make it harder to identify which account is being billed.
Important transition exceptions
- Third-party billing: A subscription purchased through Google Play, Roku, Amazon, or another platform could continue to be billed by that platform. The applicable Crunchyroll plan and price could differ from the old Funimation arrangement.
- Plan-price changes: Some legacy subscriptions could receive a price or plan change at the next billing cycle.
- Roku Pay: Roku Pay subscribers were moved to a Crunchyroll Fan plan under the transition guidance.
- Canada: Canadian monthly subscribers were subject to a change from Canadian-dollar billing to U.S.-dollar billing at the next billing cycle.
- Chile: Subscribers who did not confirm their Crunchyroll account by April 2, 2024 had their Funimation subscription canceled. Those customers could restart through Crunchyroll account settings.
These were regional and platform-specific arrangements, not a guarantee that every former subscriber received the same plan or price.
How to create a free Crunchyroll account
There is no current Funimation free-account process. The replacement is a free Crunchyroll account, although a free account does not unlock the entire Premium catalog or every Premium feature.
- Go to Crunchyroll through its website or install the Crunchyroll app on your supported phone, television, streaming device, game console, or other compatible device.
- Select Create Account or the equivalent registration option.
- Enter your email address and create a password, or use an available sign-in method.
- Continue with a free account, or open the Premium membership options if you want paid features.
On some devices, the exact labels differ. For example, the Fire TV flow allows a viewer to install Crunchyroll, choose Log In or create a new account, and then start Premium through Amazon checkout. An existing free-account user can open Membership Info and choose the option to try Premium.
What can you expect from a free account?
A free account lets you sign in and use account-level features, but it should not be confused with unrestricted free streaming. Crunchyroll’s free-account experience can include advertising, limited content availability, and fewer features than Premium. Crunchyroll positions Premium as the way to access its full available library, ad-free viewing, simulcasts, and other membership benefits.
There is also a separate Crunchyroll Channel. It is a free, curated, 24/7 anime channel available on select platforms, including LG Smart TVs, Vizio, Amazon Freevee, and Roku. It does not require a Crunchyroll account or subscription. It is not the same thing as receiving the complete Crunchyroll on-demand catalog for free.

Free account versus the seven-day Premium trial
| Option | What it means | Main limitation or warning |
|---|---|---|
| Free Crunchyroll account | An account that has not been upgraded to Premium | Does not automatically provide the complete Premium library or all Premium features; advertising and availability limits may apply |
| Standard Premium trial | Seven consecutive days of key Premium benefits | Requires a valid payment method and normally converts to a paid membership unless canceled beforehand |
| Paid Premium | Ongoing membership with benefits determined by the selected plan | Renews until canceled; pricing, features, and availability vary by country and billing platform |
How the standard seven-day trial works
Crunchyroll’s standard Premium trial lasts seven consecutive days, although a special promotion may use different terms. A valid payment method is required. During the standard trial, the advertised Premium benefits include ad-free anime viewing, unlimited access to the available Premium library, music and concert content, and access to the U.S. Crunchyroll Store.
The trial normally becomes a paid membership automatically when the seven days end. If you do not want to pay, cancel before the renewal date shown in your account or by the billing provider. Crunchyroll says that canceling during the trial ends Premium access immediately; you should not assume that access will continue through the remainder of the seven days after cancellation.

What Crunchyroll Premium includes
Benefits depend on the plan, country, device, title rights, and current Crunchyroll terms. Depending on the membership tier and region, Premium can include:
- Access to a large anime library available in your territory.
- Simulcast episodes as they become available, where rights permit.
- Ad-free viewing.
- Multiple profiles.
- Multiple-language audio and subtitle options when available for a title.
- Queue and watchlist features.
- Offline viewing on eligible higher-tier plans and supported devices.
- Crunchyroll Game Vault access for Mega Fan and Ultimate Fan subscribers, where offered.
- Other plan-specific benefits such as simultaneous streams, merchandise discounts, or store access.
These are not universal guarantees. Offline downloads, the number of simultaneous streams, Game Vault access, merchandise benefits, and other extras can change by plan and geography. A former Funimation dub or subtitle is also not guaranteed to be available simply because the same title moved to Crunchyroll.

Mobile app or television device
Install the Crunchyroll app from the official app store for your device, then choose Log In or create an account. Depending on the device, you may be sent to Apple, Google, Amazon, Roku, YouTube, PlayStation, or another partner for checkout. That distinction matters later: the company that bills you is usually the company through which you must cancel.
Before you press the purchase button
- Confirm that the account email is the one you intend to keep.
- Check whether the offer is a trial or an immediate paid subscription.
- Record the renewal date and the billing provider.
- Check whether your preferred audio, subtitle, or title is licensed in your country.
- Do not assume that subscribing through a television app is billed directly by Crunchyroll.
How to cancel a Crunchyroll subscription
Cancel through the company that processes the subscription. Deleting the Crunchyroll app, logging out, or removing a payment method does not reliably cancel recurring billing.
Direct Crunchyroll billing
For a subscription purchased directly on Crunchyroll.com with a card or PayPal:
- Sign in to Crunchyroll.
- Open your profile.
- Select Settings.
- Open Membership Info.
- Select Cancel Subscription.
- Choose No thanks, Finish Cancellation.
Save the confirmation screen or email. After cancellation, Premium access normally remains available until the end of the current paid billing period. Cancel before the next renewal date to avoid another charge.
Apple or Google billing
If you subscribed through the iOS or Android app, the cancellation control may not appear on the Crunchyroll website. Manage the subscription through the Apple App Store or Google Play account that is being billed. Make sure you are signed in to the same Apple or Google account used for the purchase.
Amazon, PlayStation, Roku, YouTube, or another partner
Subscriptions purchased through a partner generally must be canceled in that partner’s account or subscription settings. Look at the receipt or bank statement to identify the billing company. If the charge comes from Amazon, Roku, PlayStation, YouTube, or another provider, cancel there rather than simply deleting the Crunchyroll app.

What happened to Funimation watch history and Digital Copies?
Funimation watch-history migration is no longer available. If your former watch history did not appear in Crunchyroll, there is not a current migration process you can start now.
Crunchyroll also says it does not currently support Funimation Digital Copies. Previously available digital-copy access should not be treated as a guaranteed Crunchyroll entitlement. A transferred subscription is not the same thing as a transfer of every purchase, watch-history record, or digital-copy benefit.

Refunds and unexpected charges
If you no longer want a transferred subscription
Try signing in to Crunchyroll and cancel through Profile → Settings → Membership Info → Cancel Subscription. If the subscription is billed by a third party, use that provider’s cancellation process instead.
Refund eligibility depends on the payment method, region, subscription type, and circumstances. Crunchyroll’s support guidance identifies annual members as eligible to seek a refund for the remaining Premium period, but this should not be read as a universal refund promise for every customer or billing platform.
If you see a Funimation-linked or unexpected charge
- Check the charge date, amount, merchant name, and the email addresses associated with your Crunchyroll and former Funimation accounts.
- Look for receipts from Crunchyroll, Apple, Google, Amazon, Roku, PlayStation, YouTube, or another billing provider.
- Sign in to the likely account and inspect Membership Info.
- Cancel through the actual billing provider.
- Contact Crunchyroll Support with the charge date, amount, merchant name, account email, and payment details if the charge remains unexplained.
- If the charge is unauthorized and the billing provider cannot resolve it, follow your card issuer’s dispute process.
Do not promise yourself a refund merely because the Funimation app closed. Refund decisions can depend on the transaction history and the company that processed the payment.
Can former Funimation credentials still work?
Former customers should try the email address and password used for Funimation on Crunchyroll. Eligible subscriptions were generally transitioned, but credentials, payment arrangements, and account status were affected by regional and platform-specific exceptions. If the login fails, use the account-recovery option for the old email address or contact support rather than assuming that a brand-new account will contain your old membership.

Finding a former Funimation show
Search for the title directly in Crunchyroll and check the available seasons, audio tracks, subtitles, and territory restrictions. Most of the former streaming catalog was migrated, but “most” does not mean every title. A show may be absent, incomplete, or offered with different language options because streaming rights vary by country and can change over time.
If a title is not available on Crunchyroll, possible alternatives include another licensed streaming service or a legitimate physical release. Buying a Blu-ray or DVD does not restore a Funimation subscription, Funimation watch history, or Funimation Digital Copy access.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Funimation free?
Funimation is no longer operating as a standalone streaming service, so there is no current Funimation free account or subscription. Crunchyroll has free account features and a separate free, curated Crunchyroll Channel on select platforms, but a free account does not unlock the entire Premium catalog.
Can I still sign up for Funimation?
No. The Funimation app and website closed on April 2, 2024. New customers should create an account or choose Premium through Crunchyroll.
Do my Funimation credentials work on Crunchyroll?
Former customers should try the same email address and password on Crunchyroll. Eligible subscriptions were generally transitioned, but account results could vary by region, payment platform, and subscription type.
Will a Crunchyroll free trial charge me?
Normally, the standard seven-day Premium trial converts to a paid membership automatically unless you cancel before renewal. A valid payment method is required. Users who previously used a trial may be charged immediately, and canceling during the trial may end Premium access immediately.
Did all Funimation shows move to Crunchyroll?
No guarantee covers every title. Most of the former catalog was migrated, but licensing rights, territory, language, and title-specific availability can prevent a show or particular dub from appearing.
Does canceling the Crunchyroll app stop billing?
No. Deleting the app, logging out, or removing a payment method does not cancel a subscription. Cancel through Crunchyroll or the partner that bills you, such as Apple, Google, Amazon, Roku, PlayStation, or YouTube.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Funimation subscriptions are closed. Use Crunchyroll for new accounts, former Funimation content, and current Premium plans; check the checkout screen for current terms; and cancel through the provider that bills you. Do not assume that every former Funimation title, watch-history item, Digital Copy, price, or subscription transition is still available in the same form.
