The Lord of the Rings trilogy cast at a glance
When viewers refer to “the cast of The Lord of the Rings,” they usually mean Peter Jackson’s live-action trilogy. Its story follows Frodo Baggins after he inherits the One Ring and joins a nine-member Fellowship on a mission to destroy it in the fires of Mount Doom.

The ensemble is built around several contrasting partnerships: Frodo and Sam’s bond of trust, Aragorn and Arwen’s romance, Gandalf and Frodo’s mentor-and-protégé relationship, Boromir and Faramir’s different responses to temptation, and the unlikely friendship between Legolas and Gimli.
The nine members of the Fellowship
| Character | Actor | Role in the trilogy |
|---|---|---|
| Frodo Baggins | Elijah Wood | The Hobbit who inherits the One Ring and becomes its principal bearer. Frodo is the emotional center of the quest. |
| Samwise Gamgee | Sean Astin | Frodo’s gardener, companion, and most steadfast supporter. Sam’s loyalty becomes essential to the quest’s survival and emotional resolution. |
| Gandalf | Ian McKellen | The wizard who guides the Hobbits and helps unite the Free Peoples. After confronting the Balrog, he returns as Gandalf the White. |
| Aragorn | Viggo Mortensen | The Ranger known as Strider, who accepts his identity as heir to Gondor and becomes one of the war’s central military and political leaders. |
| Boromir | Sean Bean | Son of the Steward of Gondor and a member of the Fellowship. His desire to use the Ring demonstrates its corrupting influence. |
| Legolas | Orlando Bloom | An Elven archer from Mirkwood whose friendship with Gimli helps bridge the longstanding hostility between Elves and Dwarves. |
| Gimli | John Rhys-Davies | A Dwarf warrior from Erebor who adds martial strength, determination, and comic counterpoint to the Fellowship. |
| Peregrin “Pippin” Took | Billy Boyd | A young Hobbit whose impulsiveness gradually develops into courage. His actions eventually affect the wider war. |
| Meriadoc “Merry” Brandybuck | Dominic Monaghan | Pippin’s close companion, whose courage grows through the battles involving Rohan and Gondor. |
The Fellowship therefore consists of Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin, Gandalf, Aragorn, Boromir, Legolas, and Gimli. The actor order sometimes changes in promotional listings, but those are the complete nine members of the film Fellowship.
If you are planning a close rewatch, The Lord of the Rings trilogy extended edition Blu-ray is a natural physical reference point for checking the cast, characters, and performances across all three films. Availability and edition details can vary by market.
Other principal heroes and allies
| Character | Actor | Character guide |
|---|---|---|
| Arwen | Liv Tyler | Elrond’s daughter and Aragorn’s beloved. The films give her a more active role in the early story than she has in Tolkien’s novels. |
| Galadriel | Cate Blanchett | The powerful Elven leader of Lothlórien, who confronts and resists the temptation of the Ring. |
| Elrond | Hugo Weaving | The Half-Elven lord of Rivendell, father of Arwen, and an important political and familial authority. |
| Faramir | David Wenham | Captain of Gondor and Boromir’s brother. In contrast with Boromir, Faramir rejects the temptation to seize the Ring. |
| Éowyn | Miranda Otto | A shieldmaiden of Rohan who challenges the restrictions placed on her and plays a decisive role in the defeat of the Witch-king. |
| Théoden | Bernard Hill | King of Rohan. His recovery from Saruman’s influence allows him to resume effective leadership. |
| Éomer | Karl Urban | Théoden’s nephew and a leading Rohirrim warrior who becomes king after the war. |
| Gríma Wormtongue | Brad Dourif | Théoden’s compromised adviser and an agent of Saruman’s influence at the royal court. |
The principal villains and unusual credits
| Character or role | Performer | How the role works in the films |
|---|---|---|
| Saruman | Christopher Lee | A wizard corrupted by power who allies himself with Sauron and commands the forces of Isengard. |
| Gollum / Sméagol | Andy Serkis | A former Ring-bearer whose obsession makes him both an antagonist and a tragic illustration of the Ring’s corrupting power. The character is digitally realized, but Serkis’s voice and performance are central to the role. |
| Sauron | No single conventional speaking-role actor | The Dark Lord is presented through visual embodiments and creature performances rather than as a conventional dialogue-heavy villain. Sala Baker physically portrayed Sauron in the prologue and performed other creature roles, but should not be described as the trilogy’s principal speaking actor for Sauron. |
| The One Ring | Alan Howard | Howard is credited for the Ring’s voice in The Fellowship of the Ring. |
| The Witch-king of Angmar | Creature and stunt performances | The leader of the Nazgûl is not best represented by a single conventional actor listing. In the film story, Éowyn and Merry together play decisive roles in defeating him. |
This is why simple “actor who played Sauron” lists can be misleading. Sauron’s presence is deliberately fragmented across armor, visual effects, creature work, and the larger mythology of the Ring.

Frodo and Sam
Frodo carries the Ring, but Sam is the companion who repeatedly keeps the journey alive. Their relationship is the trilogy’s clearest arc of trust, endurance, and sacrifice.
Gandalf and Frodo
Gandalf begins as Frodo’s mentor in the Shire and becomes a guiding figure in the wider struggle against Sauron. Their relationship connects the intimate opening of the story with the war that follows.
Aragorn and Arwen
Aragorn and Arwen provide the central romantic relationship in the films. Aragorn’s acceptance of his royal destiny and Arwen’s choice concerning mortality are closely connected to the trilogy’s political and emotional resolution.
Elrond and Arwen
Elrond’s concern for Arwen centers on her mortality and her relationship with Aragorn. Their conflict gives the film version of Arwen’s story additional dramatic weight.

Boromir and Faramir
The brothers represent two different responses to the Ring. Boromir is overcome by the desire to use its power, while Faramir ultimately refuses to take it for himself.
Legolas and Gimli
They begin with the burden of longstanding Elven-Dwarven tensions. Shared danger gradually turns that distrust into one of the trilogy’s most recognizable friendships.
Éowyn and Théoden
As niece and uncle within Rohan’s royal house, Éowyn and Théoden embody two related ideas of duty: Théoden’s responsibility to lead his people and Éowyn’s determination to serve despite the limits imposed on her.
Jackson’s films are adaptations, not a one-to-one version of the novels
Peter Jackson’s trilogy adapts Tolkien’s story for a different medium. It preserves the central quest and many of the major characters, but it does not reproduce every plot function or character emphasis from the books.
The clearest example in this guide is Arwen. The films make her more active in the early narrative, giving Liv Tyler’s character material that is handled differently or more briefly in the novels. The movies also consolidate or alter some events and emphasize the visual and performance continuity of the Fellowship.
Descriptions such as “Arwen is the Elf who…” or “the younger Galadriel…” should therefore be qualified according to the screen version being discussed. A film character guide is not automatically a complete guide to Tolkien’s books.
For readers who want a broader production and character reference alongside the films, The Lord of the Rings Complete Visual Companion is relevant because it is designed as an illustrated reference to characters, places, and the production world. It should complement—not replace—the actor-and-role information above.
The Rings of Power: the separate Second Age television cast
Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power takes place in Tolkien’s Second Age, thousands of years before the Third Age setting of Jackson’s films. It combines familiar Tolkien characters with original or substantially reinterpreted television characters. It is not a prequel that follows the same cast from the movie trilogy.

That distinction is especially important for Galadriel and Elrond. Morfydd Clark and Robert Aramayo play younger Second Age versions of those characters, while Cate Blanchett and Hugo Weaving play the better-known Third Age versions in Jackson’s films.
Principal Second Age cast
| Actor | Character | Series context |
|---|---|---|
| Morfydd Clark | Galadriel | A younger Second Age version of the Elven character, distinct from Cate Blanchett’s film portrayal. |
| Robert Aramayo | Elrond | A younger version of the Half-Elven figure who later appears in the Third Age film chronology. |
| Charles Edwards | Celebrimbor | The Elven smith associated with the forging of the Rings of Power. |
| Charlie Vickers | Halbrand / Sauron | Halbrand is an original character identity created for the series; the character is later revealed to be Sauron, who adopts the Annatar persona in Season 2. |
| Ismael Cruz Córdova | Arondir | A Silvan Elf assigned to watch the Southlands and drawn into that region’s conflict. |
| Nazanin Boniadi | Bronwyn | A human healer and leadership figure in the Southlands storyline. |
| Tyroe Muhafidin | Theo | Bronwyn’s son, who becomes involved in the conflict surrounding the Southlands. |
| Benjamin Walker | Gil-galad | High King of the Elves. |
| Lloyd Owen | Elendil | A Númenórean sea captain and the father of Isildur and Eärien. |
| Maxim Baldry | Isildur | Elendil’s son, shown before his later legendary role in the history of the One Ring. |
| Ema Horvath | Eärien | Isildur’s sister and an original character created for the series. |
| Cynthia Addai-Robinson | Queen-Regent Míriel | The ruler of Númenor during the series’ early storyline. |
| Trystan Gravelle | Pharazôn | Míriel’s adviser and a major Númenórean political figure. |
| Owain Arthur | Prince Durin IV | The Dwarven prince of Khazad-dûm. |
| Sophia Nomvete | Princess Disa | Durin IV’s wife and one of the series’ principal Dwarven characters. |
| Markella Kavenagh | Elanor “Nori” Brandyfoot | A curious Harfoot whose desire to see a larger world drives her storyline. |
| Megan Richards | Poppy Proudfellow | Nori’s Harfoot friend. |
| Daniel Weyman | The Stranger / Gandalf | The series initially withholds the character’s identity; later-season story developments identify him as Gandalf. |
| Rory Kinnear | Tom Bombadil | A version of Tolkien’s enigmatic character introduced in Season 2. |
| Ciarán Hinds | The Dark Wizard | A corrupted Istar introduced in the later series storyline. |
Spoilers for The Rings of Power: Charlie Vickers’s Halbrand is revealed as Sauron, and Daniel Weyman’s initially unidentified Stranger is later identified as Gandalf. These are series-specific story developments and should not be merged with the film portrayals by Andy Serkis, Ian McKellen, or the other Jackson-trilogy performers.
The series also develops a distinctive relationship between Galadriel and Sauron through Second Age deception and the creation of the Rings. That conflict belongs to the television continuity and should not be presented as the same relationship shown between Cate Blanchett’s Galadriel and Sauron’s forces in Jackson’s Third Age films.
The War of the Rohirrim: animated prequel cast
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is an animated New Line feature directed by Kenji Kamiyama. It is set 183 years before the original film trilogy and focuses on the House of Helm Hammerhand during the attack led by Wulf.
| Voice actor | Character | Role in the film |
|---|---|---|
| Brian Cox | Helm Hammerhand | The central king of Rohan and head of the house at the heart of the story. |
| Gaia Wise | Héra | The principal character associated with Helm’s household and the film’s central conflict. |
| Luke Pasqualino | Wulf | The leader of the attack against Helm Hammerhand and Rohan. |
| Miranda Otto | Éowyn, narrator | Otto reprises the film-trilogy role as narrator, creating a link to Jackson’s screen world without making the animated film a direct continuation of the trilogy’s plot. |
Miranda Otto’s narration is a connective device, not evidence that the animated film shares the same immediate storyline as The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, or The Return of the King.
Collectors may also encounter character-focused merchandise connected to the Jackson films, such as the LEGO Lord of the Rings: Rivendell set. The set is a collectible recreation of a prominent film location and includes 15 character minifigures, but it is optional merchandise rather than a resource needed to understand the cast.

The film’s connection to the original trilogy is therefore through returning performers and characters, not through a new version of the Second Age story told in The Rings of Power. It should be listed as an upcoming project alongside, rather than folded into, the released trilogy.
