Rossi has publicly described a family left feeling broken, leaning on faith, protecting its boundaries, and trying to value ordinary time together. By 2025, family routines, parenting daughter Skylar, and renewed attention from The Real Housewives of Orange County had become part of that continuing effort to build a life around grief.
Grayson’s death remains the emotional center of the story
Grayson Arroyo-Smiley, Slade Smiley’s son, died in February 2023 at age 22 after a prolonged battle with a brain tumor. Gretchen Rossi publicly paid tribute to him, and later coverage from Bravo and E! identified his death as the family’s defining recent loss.

The public record does not show that grief has ended or that Rossi and Smiley have reached a permanent solution. It shows a family attempting to keep living while carrying a loss that continues to shape its priorities, relationships, and public decisions.
Rossi’s clearest account: faith, time together, and boundaries
In a January 2024 reflection, Rossi wrote that the family felt “broken” after Grayson’s death and did not know how to “do life again.” She said they leaned on their faith, tried to cherish every moment, and worked on setting boundaries.

Those remarks offer the clearest first-person description of how Rossi said the family was coping. They also explain why “balance” should not be treated as a synonym for recovery. In this context, balance means making room for sorrow while continuing with parenting, partnership, family obligations, and public life.
- Faith: Rossi presented faith as one source of strength for the family.
- Presence: She emphasized cherishing time with the people they love rather than taking ordinary moments for granted.
- Boundaries: She described protecting personal limits as part of their adjustment, an especially relevant choice for people whose lives are routinely discussed in public.
There is no reliable basis for turning those statements into a diagnosis, a formal treatment plan, or a claim that either Rossi or Smiley has completed a particular stage of grief. The available reporting does not establish whether either person pursued counseling or another specific clinical intervention.
Daily family life became part of the adjustment
After the loss, Rossi and Smiley also spoke publicly about reconnecting through ordinary family activities. A bike ride with their daughter, Skylar, was presented as an example of spending time together and returning attention to family life.
That kind of routine can be meaningful without being portrayed as a cure. A bike ride, a family celebration, or a familiar household ritual does not erase bereavement. It can, however, give a family a manageable way to remain connected when life feels unfamiliar.

By May 2025, Bravo described Rossi and Smiley as focused on family life with Skylar. Rossi referred publicly to Smiley and Skylar as her “everything” and described their daughter as a blessing. Bravo also reported on Smiley’s recurring Valentine’s Day flower tradition for Skylar and Rossi’s description of their bond as a healing gift for him.
Rank #2
Those are Rossi’s public characterizations, not independently verified psychological findings. The careful conclusion is that she sees family connection as important to Smiley and to the household—not that Skylar was responsible for healing her father or that family life resolved his grief.
The couple’s long-term partnership adds another kind of public pressure
Rossi and Smiley have been together for roughly 16 years. They became engaged around 2013 and welcomed Skylar in 2019, but they have not legally married, according to Bravo’s October 2025 reporting.
Their relationship structure became a renewed subject of discussion when Rossi returned to RHOC in 2025 as a friend of the cast. Cast members questioned why the couple remained engaged rather than married and debated whether finances played a role. Rossi denied the reported financial explanation, while other cast members offered their own interpretations.

Those competing explanations should not be presented as settled fact. What is established is that the couple remains publicly engaged but unmarried and that the subject resurfaced during the show’s 2025 storyline. What is not established is a definitive reason for that decision.
This matters to the balance narrative because grief and partnership do not exist in separate compartments. Rossi and Smiley have had to manage private family pain while also answering public questions about their commitment, finances, parenting, and future. The fact that they present themselves as a family does not require them to follow a conventional timetable for marriage.
Rank #3
Returning to RHOC brought the story back into public view
Rossi’s 2025 return brought renewed attention to a relationship and family life that had already been under scrutiny for years. In a separate September 2025 report, Bravo described Rossi defending Smiley after his involvement in RHOC drama. She said she had initially been angry with him but later defended his participation after the women asked her to call him.
That episode is not evidence about the family’s grief itself. It does show the couple functioning as a public team while their relationship was being discussed on television. Their ability to support—or challenge—one another in that setting is part of the broader balancing act: maintaining a partnership while living through family loss and renewed reality-TV attention.
For viewers who want the television context, availability can vary by country and change over time. Bravo has identified Peacock as a streaming home for The Real Housewives of Orange County and related Bravo programming; viewers should check the current catalog in their region before subscribing.
A contested family history should be handled carefully
There is also a public dispute over the nature of Rossi and Smiley’s relationship with Grayson. Grayson’s mother, Michelle Arroyo, disputed the image of their relationship after his death and alleged that it had been virtually nonexistent. Rossi’s public tribute presented a different picture.
These are contested accounts. Reporting by Us Weekly documented Arroyo’s allegations and Rossi’s tribute, but the available record does not independently adjudicate the disagreement. It would be inaccurate to repeat either side’s account as an established, complete history of Grayson’s relationships.
Rank #4
The dispute is nevertheless relevant because it shows how bereavement can become entangled with competing memories, family estrangement, and public narratives. A tribute published after someone’s death may express genuine grief while still not resolving every disagreement about the relationship that existed beforehand.
What “finding balance” means here
Based on the public statements and reporting available through 2025, the phrase describes several simultaneous efforts:
| Part of the family’s life | What has been publicly documented | What should not be inferred |
|---|---|---|
| Grief | Rossi described the family as broken and uncertain how to continue after Grayson’s death. | That grief is over, resolved, or clinically understood from public comments alone. |
| Faith and values | Rossi said faith, cherishing time, and boundaries helped shape the family’s response. | That these practices work identically for every bereaved person. |
| Parenting | Rossi and Smiley continued family life with Skylar, whom Rossi has described as a blessing. | That a child can or should be responsible for a parent’s healing. |
| Partnership | The couple has remained together and engaged, without legally marrying as of the latest reporting. | That finances definitively explain their decision or that marriage is the measure of commitment. |
| Public attention | Rossi’s return to RHOC revived questions about the couple and brought Smiley into related drama. | That television appearances reveal the family’s complete private experience of grief. |
The record points to continuing adaptation, not a neat ending
A 2025/2026 podcast listing for In Heels with Keni Silva frames Rossi’s discussion around personal loss, Grayson’s death, faith, moving forward, and her nontraditional partnership. The listing supports the broad thematic connection, but it does not provide a full transcript or enough information to independently verify every detail of the episode.
Similarly, Bravo’s 2025 reporting discussed Rossi’s frozen eggs, the possibility of another child, and her concerns about postpartum depression, including the possibility of surrogacy. Those are Rossi’s reported considerations, not evidence that a pregnancy occurred or that the couple’s family structure changed. No authoritative reporting located for this article establishes a completed marriage, a new loss, a formal grief milestone, or a definitive family change after the 2025 developments.
The most accurate picture is therefore unfinished. Rossi and Smiley appear to be trying to preserve family routines, support one another, protect their private limits, and remain present for Skylar while carrying the death of Grayson. That is not a story about grief disappearing. It is a story about continuing to adapt around it.

Sources and reporting scope
This account is based on public reporting and statements from Bravo, E!, Us Weekly, Rossi’s January 2024 reflection, and the available podcast listing. The strongest directly relevant reporting located dates from January 2024 through October 2025. Because public accounts are incomplete and some family claims conflict, statements about private relationships and emotional recovery are attributed rather than treated as independently proven facts.
