1. Close Prime Video completely
Start with a full restart of the app rather than repeatedly pressing Play. On a computer, close the Prime Video browser tab or close the browser itself. On a phone, tablet, smart TV, Fire TV device, game console, or streaming box, exit Prime Video and use the platform’s force-close option if one is available.
Open Prime Video again and retry the same title. If the error appeared while switching profiles, changing episodes, or resuming a partially watched program, this simple restart may clear the temporary playback state.

2. Set the device clock to automatic
Check the device’s date, time, and time-zone settings. Set them to Automatic or Set automatically where that option exists. An incorrect clock can interfere with authentication and secure connections used by streaming applications.
- Smart TV or streaming device: open Settings and look under General, System, Device Preferences, or Date & Time.
- Android: open Settings, then System or General management, followed by Date & time. Enable automatic date and time and automatic time zone if available.
- iPhone or iPad: open Settings > General > Date & Time and enable Set Automatically.
- Windows: open Settings > Time & language > Date & time and enable Set time automatically. Select Sync now if available.
Restart Prime Video after correcting the clock.
3. Temporarily disable VPNs and proxy servers
Turn off a VPN or proxy temporarily and try Prime Video again. Amazon specifically includes this check in its playback troubleshooting guidance, but that does not mean every VPN causes error 5001. This is a diagnostic step: if playback works with the service disabled, the VPN or proxy configuration, exit server, or traffic route may be involved.
Check both the device and the network. A VPN app may run directly on a phone or computer, while a proxy or VPN can also be configured in a browser, router, security product, or corporate network. If you are using a managed work or school connection, you may need its administrator to test the service.
4. Power-cycle the affected device
Turn off the computer, smart TV, Fire TV device, console, phone, tablet, or streaming box. Leave it off for at least 60 seconds, then turn it back on and reopen Prime Video.
This is more thorough than pressing a remote’s standby button if the device remains partially powered. On phones and tablets, use a normal restart. On connected TV hardware, unplugging the device briefly may be necessary if its normal power-off command does not fully restart it. Avoid unplugging equipment while it is installing an update.

5. Restart the home network
If error 5001 continues, restart the home network as well as the playback device:
- Close Prime Video and turn off the affected device.
- Unplug the modem and router, or follow the manufacturer’s restart procedure.
- Wait briefly, then power the modem back on.
- Wait until its connection indicators stabilize.
- Power the router back on if it is separate and wait for its lights to stabilize.
- Reconnect the playback device and test Prime Video.
A device can show that it is connected to Wi-Fi while still being unable to reach a streaming service reliably. Restarting the network equipment can therefore be useful, but error 5001 is not officially defined as a connectivity-only problem.
6. Install every available update
Check for updates in all of the layers involved in playback:

- Your web browser
- The smart TV or streaming device operating system
- Phone or tablet software
- Windows or macOS
- Firmware for a connected TV, console, or streaming box
On a smart TV or streaming device, look under Settings > System, Support, About, or Software Update. App-store labels vary by manufacturer. On a computer, update the browser from its About or Help menu and install pending operating-system updates. After updating, restart the device before testing again.
7. Reinstall Prime Video
If closing the app, restarting the equipment, checking the network, and installing updates have not helped, uninstall and reinstall Prime Video if your platform permits it. Reinstallation can replace a damaged or incomplete app installation, but it will not necessarily resolve an account-wide, regional, network, or service-side problem.

Before uninstalling, make sure you know how you sign in to Amazon. Reinstalling may remove local app data, saved settings, or downloaded content. After reinstalling, sign in again and test a title that previously produced error 5001.
Device-specific checks
Smart TVs
Confirm that the TV model and its current software still support Prime Video. Smart-TV app support can vary by model, software version, and location. Restart the TV fully, install TV and app updates, and reinstall Prime Video if the TV offers that option. If Prime Video works on another device connected to the same network, the TV app, TV firmware, or model support becomes more likely than a complete home-internet failure.
Fire TV and other streaming boxes
Restart the device, check for Fire OS or firmware updates, and update Prime Video through the device’s app-management screen. If the device is old, no longer receives updates, or has broader app problems, test Prime Video on a different supported device before replacing it.
Web browsers on Windows or Mac
Close every Prime Video tab, restart the browser, and install its updates. Test the service in a current supported browser without a VPN or proxy. If playback works in another browser, the original browser’s extensions, site data, or configuration may be involved. Disable extensions temporarily, particularly privacy, filtering, or traffic-routing extensions, and test again.
If Prime Video is the only service failing and the browser works normally elsewhere, avoid treating a general PC repair utility as a Prime Video fix. A Windows repair tool may be relevant only when the computer has wider system instability, not as a substitute for Prime Video, browser, account, or network troubleshooting.

Android phones and tablets
Restart the device, update Android and Prime Video, and confirm that automatic date and time are enabled. If the problem remains, use the app settings to force-stop Prime Video and reinstall it. Menu names differ by Android manufacturer. Do not clear app data unless you are prepared to sign in again and potentially lose local downloads.

iPhone and iPad
Close Prime Video from the app switcher, restart the device, update iOS or iPadOS and the Prime Video app, and reinstall the app if needed. Check Settings > General > Date & Time and enable Set Automatically. Make sure the device is not routing traffic through a VPN or proxy during the test.
Find out whether the problem is the device or the network
Use two comparisons before making major changes:
- Same account and same network, different device: sign in to Prime Video on another supported device connected to the same Wi-Fi or wired network.
- Same device, different streaming service: open another legitimate streaming app on the device that shows error 5001.

Buying hardware is not a first-line fix for error 5001. Do it only if you have isolated the issue to an unsupported, obsolete, unreliable, or persistently malfunctioning smart-TV app or streaming box. Amazon maintains a supported-device catalog covering Fire TV, smart TVs, mobile devices, consoles, Blu-ray players, set-top boxes, media players, and computers; compatibility and available features can vary by model, software, and location.
A current Fire TV Stick replacement can be a reasonable fallback when your television’s built-in app is no longer supported or the existing streaming hardware is defective. It is optional and is not guaranteed to fix an account-wide, network-wide, regional, or Amazon service-side problem. Verify the specific model’s compatibility, your television’s HDMI requirements, power arrangement, desired resolution, and availability in your region before buying.
Factory reset: only after everything else
Do not factory-reset a TV or streaming device as an early troubleshooting step. Amazon warns that a factory reset removes account information and downloaded content from applications on the device, not just Prime Video.

Use it only when:
- The device has broader software problems, not merely one Prime Video error;
- Updates, restarts, network checks, and reinstallation have failed;
- You have backed up anything that can be backed up;
- You know the sign-in details for the device, Amazon, and other installed services; and
- You have checked the manufacturer’s reset instructions.
