The Prime Video crime-action thriller surrounds him with investigators from the LAPD, DEA, FBI and DHS as the case grows into a threat against Los Angeles.
The complete first season has 13 episodes. Prime Video released the first three on June 25, 2025, then continued with weekly episodes until the September 3, 2025 finale. The series was canceled after one season, so there is currently no Season 2 to follow the first season’s unresolved wider story.
What is Countdown about?
Created by Derek Haas, Countdown begins as a murder investigation. The victim is a DHS officer killed in public, and the circumstances lead Special Agent in Charge Nathan Blythe to assemble a secret, cross-agency unit known as Task Force Hurricane.
Mark Meachum becomes the audience’s entry point into the team. His LAPD experience puts him in the field, while the task force’s other members bring expertise in undercover work, cybercrime, counterterrorism, narcotics and federal intelligence. What starts with one homicide gradually becomes a race to protect Los Angeles, a city of millions, from a larger threat. Prime Video’s announcement describes the series as a race against time involving a citywide danger.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Countdown coming back for Season 2?
No. Prime Video canceled Countdown after its first season on October 10, 2025. Jensen Ackles subsequently confirmed that Amazon would not continue the show and described the decision as disappointing. As of August 11, 2026, the series remains at one season and 13 episodes; no second season is forthcoming.
The first season resolves the Volchek bomb plot before its final three episodes, but the closing stretch introduces a new case involving a possible assassination plot. That means viewers should not expect the show’s larger story to receive a completed Season 2 continuation.

This guide does not assume a free trial, subscription promotion or identical availability in every region.
Spoiler warning
The cast and agency guide above is designed to be spoiler-light. The plot details below are limited to the season’s broad setup and status: the murder of a DHS officer leads to Task Force Hurricane, Borys Volchek’s galleria bomb plot is resolved before the final three episodes, and a possible assassination plot emerges later. Because the series was canceled after Season 1, that later storyline does not have an available Season 2 continuation.
