Short answer: YouTube has not officially removed the skip option from eligible skippable ads. On those ads, viewers should still be able to skip after five seconds. What is changing is the ad-player design: the familiar countdown and prominent skip control may be replaced or accompanied by a less obvious progress bar at the bottom of the player.
That explanation does not apply to every ad. Some ads are non-skippable by design, television viewers may receive different ad formats, and occasional bugs or on-screen cards can make the control difficult to find.
Why the skip button seems to have disappeared
For years, YouTube made the ad countdown easy to recognize. A timer showed how long remained before the viewer could skip, and a large-looking control appeared in the familiar position in the ad player.
The newer interface is less explicit. YouTube has been reducing some of the visual elements in the ad player and may show progress as a bar along the bottom of the screen instead of presenting the countdown as prominently. That can create the impression that the skip button has been removed, even though the underlying rule for skippable ads has not changed.

YouTube told technology reporters in October 2024 that the skip option still appears after five seconds of playback on eligible skippable ads. Its advertising documentation likewise continues to distinguish between skippable in-stream ads, non-skippable in-stream ads, and six-second bumper ads.
So the most accurate description is interface redesign, not a confirmed abolition of skipping.
When should the skip option appear?
For a skippable in-stream ad, YouTube’s stated rule is straightforward: the viewer receives the option to skip after five seconds. The control may not be available immediately, and the visual design may differ by device, app version, or experiment.
- Start the ad and wait at least five seconds. A skip control is not expected to be active before the eligibility period ends.
- Look at the bottom of the player. A progress bar may communicate the waiting period instead of the old, prominent countdown.
- Check the wording on the ad. If YouTube labels it non-skippable, there may be no skip control at all.
- On a television, expect more variation. Connected-TV advertising does not always use the same formats or interface as mobile and desktop playback.
If the ad remains on screen after five seconds, that alone does not prove YouTube is suppressing a button. The ad may not be eligible for skipping, or the control may simply be represented differently.

Not all YouTube ads can be skipped
The biggest source of confusion is the assumption that every YouTube ad should eventually show a skip button. That is not how YouTube’s ad formats work.

YouTube also says that some non-skippable in-stream ads may appear on YouTube TV, subject to eligibility. That matters because television viewing is increasingly treated as a separate advertising environment rather than a large version of mobile or desktop playback.
Why connected-TV viewers may see longer non-skippable ads
YouTube’s advertising changes are not limited to the appearance of the control. The company is also developing advertising inventory specifically for connected televisions.

Reporting on the announcement said Google could dynamically select between six-second bumpers, 15-second standard ads, and 30-second connected-TV non-skippable ads. The purpose is to deliver a complete advertising message on a large screen in a way that resembles traditional television advertising.
This is an important distinction:
- A redesign of the skip interface does not mean that YouTube has made ordinary skippable ads permanently non-skippable.
- Connected-TV viewers may nevertheless encounter longer non-skippable formats that mobile and desktop viewers do not see in the same way.
- A television ad that cannot be skipped may be behaving according to its format, not malfunctioning.
The 30-second VRC Non-skip format should not be generalized to every YouTube device. It is a connected-TV format, and availability can depend on eligibility, market, inventory, and the viewing environment.
What happened with the reported 90-second timers?
In April 2026, some viewers reported television ad timers suggesting that they would need to wait roughly 90 seconds before skipping. Those reports understandably fueled speculation that YouTube had introduced a new, extremely long non-skippable ad format.
That is not what YouTube said happened. The company initially said it did not have or test a 90-second non-skippable format. It later told 9to5Google that the incident was caused by a bug that displayed inaccurate, inflated timers for shorter ads, and that a fix was being rolled out.

Therefore, the defensible conclusion is that viewers did encounter anomalous timers, but the incident was attributed to a timer-display problem—not confirmed evidence of a 90-second non-skippable advertising product.
Can an ad card cover the skip control?
A separate 2026 report described an expandable app-install card appearing over the area where the skip control normally appears. According to user reports cited in that coverage, dragging the card downward could sometimes reveal the control.
This should be treated cautiously. YouTube has not publicly confirmed that expandable cards covering the skip control are a global platform-wide change, nor has it published a device-by-device explanation. The reports are best understood as evidence of a possible layout or rendering problem affecting some users, ad layouts, or devices.
If a card is visibly covering the lower part of the ad player, try dismissing it or repositioning it if the interface allows. That is a possible workaround—not an official universal instruction and not proof that YouTube intentionally placed the card over the button.

What to do when you cannot find the skip button
1. Wait beyond the five-second mark
Do not judge the ad during its opening seconds. On a genuinely skippable in-stream ad, the option is not expected until five seconds have played.
2. Search the bottom edge of the player
The control may no longer be presented in the same large, obvious form. Watch for a progress indicator or a small control near the bottom of the video area.

3. Identify the ad format
A non-skippable in-stream ad and a bumper ad do not offer the same control. If the ad is explicitly identified as non-skippable, waiting longer will not make a skip button appear.
4. Consider the device
Televisions, streaming devices, game consoles, phones, and desktop browsers can receive different ad experiences. Connected-TV viewers should be especially cautious about assuming that a behavior seen on a phone must also apply to a television.
5. Check for overlays or expandable cards
If an app-install card or other overlay is sitting over the control area, try closing or moving it. Because this behavior has not been confirmed as a universal rollout, treat it as a troubleshooting possibility rather than a standard YouTube feature.
6. Refresh and update
If the behavior looks clearly broken, reload the video, close and reopen the official YouTube app, and install any available app update. Testing the same video or ad on another supported device can help distinguish an ad-format limitation from a local display problem.
7. Report persistent playback problems
If the same problem continues across videos and devices, use YouTube’s in-product support or reporting tools to report the ad or playback issue. Include the device, app or browser, approximate time, and what appeared on screen. A screenshot can be useful if an incorrect timer or overlay is involved.

Premium is therefore the most direct solution for viewers who do not want to deal with changing ad-player controls. It does not fix a missing skip button because it generally removes the relevant YouTube-served ad from the viewing experience instead.
There is an important limitation: Premium does not necessarily remove sponsorships that a creator has recorded and edited into the video. A creator-read promotion, product placement, or sponsored segment is part of the uploaded content, not a YouTube-served pre-roll or mid-roll ad.
There is also no physical accessory that can restore a server-controlled skip button. Changing a remote, television, or streaming stick cannot turn a non-skippable ad into a skippable one.
