Eligible Sky customers can receive HBO Max Basic with Ads as part of certain Sky packages, including Sky Ultimate TV. The benefit is included in the price of the wider Sky package; it is not a standalone HBO Max subscription at no cost.
If you do not have Sky, HBO Max is available directly in the UK. Entertainment plans currently start at £4.99 a month for Basic with Ads and rise to £14.99 a month for Premium. Prices, promotions and Sky eligibility can change, so check the live checkout or My Sky before paying.
HBO Max UK prices
HBO Max’s UK entertainment plans are currently as follows. These are the direct HBO Max prices, not the price of a Sky package.

HBO Max also offers UK TNT Sports plans, either separately or bundled with selected entertainment plans. Those sports prices are separate from the entertainment prices above and should be checked in the current HBO Max checkout.

The cheapest plan is not the complete catalogue
Basic with Ads is the lowest-cost standalone option, but it is not simply the full HBO Max service with commercials. HBO Max specifically excludes certain films that first stream on the service after their theatrical release window. If recently released Warner Bros. films are a major reason for subscribing, Standard with Ads, Standard or Premium may be a better fit.
Standard with Ads costs only £1 more per month than Basic with Ads in the listed direct pricing and adds the full UK entertainment catalogue, as well as downloads. It still includes advertising. Standard is the ad-free option at £9.99 a month, while Premium is aimed at households that need four concurrent streams or want 4K and Dolby Atmos where available.
How to sign up for HBO Max directly in the UK
You can subscribe directly through HBO Max or use a supported provider. The direct route is usually the clearest if you want HBO Max billing and account management separate from Sky, NOW or another service.
- Install the HBO Max app on a supported phone, tablet, television, streaming player, games console or computer, or open the HBO Max website.
- Select the subscription or sign-up option.
- Choose the plan and billing period you want.
- Enter the requested account details.
- Add a payment method. HBO Max lists cards, PayPal and supported wallet options, although the available choices can vary by sign-up route.
- Select Start Streaming and sign in on your devices.
HBO Max identifies several provider routes, including its own website, Amazon Appstore, Roku, Prime Video Channels, Samsung in selected countries and Sky. The plans, billing arrangements and available upgrades may differ when you subscribe through a provider, so check which company will charge you before confirming.

Not universally. Sky includes HBO Max Basic with Ads with eligible packages, but you still pay for the qualifying Sky package. Sky’s listed new-customer price for Sky Ultimate TV was from £24 a month on a 24-month minimum term at the time covered by the launch information. Rolling-contract prices, existing-customer prices and offers can differ.
In other words, the calculation is not “Sky gives everyone a free HBO Max subscription”. It is “some Sky packages include the value of HBO Max Basic with Ads”. Sky valued that included HBO Max tier at £4.99 a month, matching the direct Basic with Ads price.

Which Sky customers are eligible?
Eligibility depends on both the Sky platform and the package:
- Sky Stream and Sky Glass: eligibility is linked to having Sky Ultimate TV.
- Sky Q: Sky’s information identifies Sky Signature or Sky Entertainment, along with other eligible packages, as qualifying routes. Check the exact entitlement shown in your Sky account because package names and offers can vary.
- Sky+: Sky+ customers cannot use the HBO Max app. Sky says they can instead access HBO shows and films on demand through their Sky box or Sky homepage experience.
- Essential TV: Essential TV customers are not eligible for the included HBO Max app benefit, although Sky says they may be able to purchase HBO Max through Sky Marketplace.
The safest test is to check the HBO Max tile, your package details or Sky Marketplace in My Sky. Do not assume that having any Sky television service automatically qualifies you.
What HBO Max tier do you get through Sky?
The included Sky benefit is Basic with Ads, not the ad-free Standard plan or Premium. That means eligible customers receive two simultaneous Full HD streams, advertising and the Basic plan’s film limitation.
Sky also says customers can upgrade through Sky Marketplace. HBO Max’s provider guidance says a customer receiving Basic with Ads through a provider can purchase Standard with Ads for £1 a month; Sky separately says the value of the included Basic plan is deducted from the higher-tier subscription. However, Sky does not publish one universal upgrade price for every Sky Q, Sky Glass and Sky Stream account. The actual price and available tiers can depend on your account, package and current offer, so confirm the amount in My Sky before ordering.
How to activate HBO Max through Sky
- Use your Sky remote to open the HBO Max app from the Sky TV homepage. On supported Sky equipment, you can also say “HBO Max” into the voice remote.
- Follow the on-screen activation or sign-up instructions.
- Choose whether to link an existing HBO Max account or create a new one.
- If linking an existing account, use the same email address and password associated with that account.
- Complete the activation and sign in to HBO Max on other supported devices if required.
Sky says that linking the existing account preserves profiles, watch history and playlists. This is useful if you already use HBO Max directly, but it makes the billing check particularly important.
Check your existing subscription before activating
If you already pay HBO Max directly, through Prime Video Channels or through another provider, do not blindly activate the Sky offer. Sky warns that continuing to pay the old provider while starting HBO Max through Sky can create two subscriptions.

First identify who currently bills you. Then check that provider’s account and cancellation or transfer terms. Manage the existing subscription before, during or after activation as appropriate to those terms, and confirm that you have not lost access to the account you intend to keep. The same warning applies if another household member has subscribed using a different email address.
What about NOW?
NOW is a separate route from both direct HBO Max billing and Sky Ultimate TV. Sky announced that existing NOW Entertainment customers would receive Basic with Ads at no extra cost through a new NOW Entertainment & HBO Max membership. The announcement also listed the combined membership for new NOW customers from £6.99 a month at that time.
That £6.99 figure is a NOW offer, not the direct HBO Max price. NOW pricing, introductory deals and migration arrangements can change, so existing NOW customers should check their account and new customers should check the current NOW checkout.
Devices, broadband and watching HBO Max
HBO Max supports selected mobile devices, computers, smart televisions, streaming players, set-top boxes and games consoles. Amazon Fire TV devices running Fire OS 6 or later are included among the supported devices, subject to the current app and regional availability.

Buying a streaming device does not include an HBO Max subscription; you still need a direct or provider-based plan, and compatibility depends on the device software and UK availability.
For streaming quality, HBO Max’s troubleshooting guidance recommends at least 5 Mbps for HD streaming and 50 Mbps or more for 4K. Sky also says its streaming products and HBO Max delivery require broadband access. A slow or unstable connection can cause buffering even when the account and device are otherwise supported.
Which HBO Max UK option is best?
Choose direct Basic with Ads if price is the priority
At £4.99 a month, direct Basic with Ads is the lowest-cost standalone route. It suits viewers who want the core service at the lowest listed price and are comfortable with advertising and the reduced film selection.

Choose Standard with Ads if you want the full catalogue cheaply
Standard with Ads is £5.99 a month in the current direct pricing. It retains advertising but includes the full UK HBO Max entertainment catalogue and up to 30 downloads, making it a stronger value for viewers who care about films or offline viewing.

Standard costs £9.99 a month and keeps two Full HD streams and up to 30 downloads without advertising. It is the straightforward choice for a household that does not need four simultaneous streams or 4K.
Choose Premium for four streams and 4K
Premium costs £14.99 a month and adds four simultaneous streams, 4K UHD and Dolby Atmos where available, together with up to 100 downloads. Whether 4K and Dolby Atmos work also depends on the programme, device, sound system and connection.
Choose Sky Ultimate TV if you also want the wider Sky package
Sky Ultimate TV with HBO Max can make sense for someone who wants Sky’s broader television bundle as well as HBO Max. It is poor value if you only want HBO Max and would otherwise have no use for Sky TV, because the advertised Sky price is for the entire package and normally involves a minimum term.
