The finale ends with Spencer and Alex finally reuniting in Montana, but their happiness is brief. Alex gives birth to their son, John Dutton II, and dies after refusing the amputations doctors say could save her life. Spencer survives, returns to defend the Yellowstone ranch, and becomes the family’s next active protector. Meanwhile, Jacob and Spencer defeat Donald Whitfield, Banner dies while helping Jacob, Teonna is freed but left alone, and Elizabeth leaves Montana for the East Coast.
What happens at the end of 1923?
“A Dream and a Memory,” listed as Season 2, Episode 7, serves as the conclusion of 1923. Its ending resolves the immediate threats facing the Duttons, but it does not give the family lasting peace. The ranch survives Donald Whitfield’s attack, yet the finale makes clear that powerful enemies will continue to target the land.
The episode’s major outcomes are:
- Alex reaches Spencer, gives birth to their son, and dies from complications related to severe frostbite.
- The baby is named John Dutton II.
- Spencer returns to the Yellowstone ranch after briefly meeting his newborn son.
- Jacob and Spencer kill Donald Whitfield and burn his mansion.
- Banner dies after turning against Whitfield and saving Jacob’s life.
- Jack is dead, while Elizabeth leaves the ranch and returns to the East Coast.
- Teonna is arrested, released when the case against her collapses, and sent west toward California.
- The final dance between Alex and Spencer is a memory or symbolic reunion, not evidence that Alex survived.

What happens to Spencer and Alex?
Alex is stranded in the Montana snow after Paul and Hillary, the British travelers who had been helping her, die. She has almost no resources left. To attract attention, Alex burns belongings from the car, including pages from her journal and letters Cara sent to Spencer, creating a signal fire.
A passing train carrying Spencer sees the blaze. Spencer recognizes Alex in the snow, jumps from the train, and carries her back toward it. Their reunion answers the question that has driven much of the season: Alex and Spencer do find each other again.

But Alex’s condition is critical. During the reunion, she tells Spencer that she is approximately six months pregnant. A doctor on the train examines her and finds severe frostbite on her fingers, toes, and other extremities. The doctor advises them to continue to a hospital in Bozeman instead of stopping in Livingston.
That medical decision creates another painful separation. Spencer has to leave Alex with Jacob so she can continue to the hospital, while he returns to the ranch to deal with Whitfield’s attack. The couple’s reunion is therefore deliberately temporary: they overcome the distance between them, only for the consequences of Alex’s journey to become fatal.
Why does Alex die?
Alex gives birth prematurely at the Bozeman hospital. The baby initially appears too weak to survive, but he cries and begins nursing. Alex’s frostbite, however, has caused irreversible damage.
The doctors tell her that her affected limbs must be amputated immediately if she is to live. Alex refuses the operation. She also declines last rites. Before she dies, she names the baby John, after Spencer’s deceased brother, and briefly holds him.
The finale presents Alex’s decision as an act of love and agency. She has completed the journey she promised to make, reached Spencer, and delivered their child. At the same time, the scene is unambiguously tragic: refusing treatment means that she will not live to raise her son.
Spencer does not die with her. Elsa’s closing narration says that he lives for many more years and carries Alex’s memory with him. The episode’s final image of Spencer and Alex dancing must therefore be understood as a memory, imagined reunion, or symbolic image of their enduring love. It is not a literal continuation of the hospital scene and does not mean Alex survived.

Who is John Dutton II?
The baby is Spencer and Alex’s son, John Dutton II—not Jack and Elizabeth’s child. Alex chooses the name in memory of Spencer’s dead brother.
Within the show’s family history, John Dutton II is the link between the 1923 generation and the later Dutton family seen in Yellowstone. He is positioned as the future father of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton III. Spencer’s survival and his continued defense of the ranch carry the family line forward after Alex’s death.
The finale does not independently clarify every detail of the generations between 1923 and Yellowstone. The safest conclusion is that Spencer and Alex’s son is John Dutton II and that he connects this branch of the family to the modern Dutton lineage.

What happens at the Livingston train station?
Jacob and Sheriff McDowell wait at Livingston for Spencer’s train because Whitfield’s men know Spencer is arriving and plan to kill him. Banner also arrives with his wife and son. He intends to leave for Portland and has finally rejected Whitfield’s service.
Before the shooting begins, Banner warns Jacob that Whitfield is only one example of the threats the Duttons will face. His warning is important to the finale’s larger meaning: defeating one land predator will not end the pressure on the ranch.
When the train arrives, Whitfield’s men open fire. Sheriff McDowell is wounded. Jacob is hit in the abdomen, although the injury is connected to an old wound reopening rather than a straightforward new gunshot. Banner shoots Clyde before Clyde can kill Jacob. McDowell then shoots Banner.
Banner dies at the station. He does not escape with his family. His final action is a limited redemption: he cannot undo the violence and intimidation he helped Whitfield create, but he chooses to protect Jacob and his own family when it matters. Jacob promises to get Banner’s family safely to Portland.
Spencer briefly reunites with Jacob, but he sends Alex onward to the Bozeman hospital with Jacob while he goes back to defend the ranch. The decision repeats the central pattern of Spencer and Alex’s relationship: after an exhausting separation, Spencer must leave her again because the family’s land is under attack.
Do the Duttons keep the ranch?
Yes. Whitfield’s forces attack the Dutton house in waves. Cara takes a rifle position upstairs, Zane organizes the defense, and Elizabeth helps protect the house. The attackers eventually force their way inside, but Spencer arrives and kills the remaining assailants.
The immediate assault is defeated, but the victory is not presented as permanent security. Banner has already warned Jacob that Whitfield is only the first of many possible threats, and Jacob tells Spencer that the fight is not over. The ranch survives this crisis because the Duttons are willing to fight for it, not because the danger has disappeared.
This preserves the central pattern of the Yellowstone franchise: the family keeps the land, but each generation inherits conflict with people who see the ranch as an asset to acquire rather than a home to protect.
What happens to Donald Whitfield?
After the hospital sequence, Spencer leaves his newborn son with Cara and returns with Jacob to Whitfield’s mansion. Spencer shoots Whitfield, while Jacob helps make the attack a warning to other land predators. The Duttons then set the mansion on fire as they leave.

Whitfield is treated as an especially brutal representative of a broader threat: people with money and influence who regard the Yellowstone as property to be acquired.
What happens to Jack and Elizabeth?
Jack Dutton dies before the finale after leaving the ranch and being attacked. The episode reveals his death indirectly at first: he does not return with the others after the train-station battle, and his body is later found. Jack and Alex are buried in the Dutton graveyard.
Elizabeth survives, but she chooses not to remain at the ranch. She tells Cara that she will always love Jack. Cara answers that Elizabeth will eventually make new memories and may no longer feel exactly the same way, but Cara will remember Jack for both of them.
Elizabeth’s departure closes the story of a young woman who entered the Dutton family through marriage and leaves it permanently changed by violence and grief. Her pregnancy is not resolved on screen. The finale does not show what happens to the pregnancy or establish whether Elizabeth or her child will return to the Dutton story.

What happens to Teonna Rainwater?
Teonna is found near the bodies of Pete, Runs His Horse, and Father Renaud. When Marshal Mamie Fossett’s party approaches, Teonna shoots at them. She is eventually overwhelmed and arrested.
Teonna admits that she killed people who abused her and her cousin. Mamie takes her to court in Oklahoma, but the case cannot be sustained: the relevant witnesses are dead, and the authorities cannot establish the charges against her. The court dismisses the case.
Teonna is released and given a gun for protection. She is advised to travel west toward California and try to begin again. This is freedom in a legal sense, but it is not a clean victory. Teonna has lost her father, Pete, her community, and her home. The finale leaves her displaced and grieving rather than restored.

What does the final dance mean?
The final dance is the episode’s symbolic answer to Alex’s death. By this point, Alex has already died, and Elsa’s narration describes Spencer living on while carrying Alex’s memory. The scene should not be read as a resurrection or as proof that Alex survived the hospital.
The title, “A Dream and a Memory,” reinforces the interpretation. The dance represents the emotional reality of Spencer and Alex’s bond after Alex can no longer be present in his physical life. Their love survives as memory, while Spencer’s earthly responsibility is to raise their son and protect the ranch.
That choice gives the finale a bittersweet structure. Alex and Spencer receive the reunion they wanted, but not the future they imagined. Spencer’s continued life is both a duty and a form of mourning.
How the finale connects to Yellowstone
1. Spencer and Alex’s son continues the family line
John Dutton II is the clearest genealogical bridge. His birth explains how the Dutton line continues after the deaths and separations of the 1923 generation.
2. Spencer becomes the active steward of the ranch
Jacob has led the family through the immediate crisis, but the finale places Spencer in the position of carrying the responsibility forward. He leaves the hospital and his newborn son because the ranch needs defending, then returns to the fight with Jacob.

3. The Dutton pattern remains unchanged
The family keeps the land through sacrifice and violence. Whitfield is defeated, but Banner’s warning makes clear that another threat can take his place. The ending is conclusive for Spencer and Alex’s personal story while leaving chronological room for the later Dutton generations.
Was 1923 renewed for Season 3?
1923 was designed to conclude with Season 2, and no Season 3 continuation is part of the currently listed series. The available Paramount+ episode listing ends with Season 2, Episode 7, “A Dream and a Memory,” which was released in 2025. Contemporary coverage treated the episode as the conclusion of both the season and the series.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThat does not mean every future Yellowstone-related project has been permanently ruled out. Franchise reporting has pointed to 1944 as a relevant historical prequel project rather than a third season of 1923. No confirmed future storyline should be assigned to Teonna or Elizabeth unless an official announcement establishes it.
Is the ending meant to be hopeful?
It is hopeful in terms of survival and legacy, but devastating in personal cost. The baby survives. Spencer lives. The ranch remains in Dutton hands. Whitfield is dead. Teonna is legally free. Those are meaningful resolutions.
Yet nearly every resolution carries a loss. Alex dies immediately after giving birth. Spencer must mourn while raising their son. Jack is dead, Elizabeth leaves, Banner’s redemption ends with his death, and Teonna’s freedom comes without her family or home.
The finale’s emotional argument is that love and memory can outlast an individual. Whether the episode earns that argument is more debatable. Its plot is clear, but some viewers may find the repeated suffering overwhelming or feel that certain subplots, especially Teonna’s, are resolved too quickly. The intended meaning and the episode’s effectiveness are separate questions: the show clearly wants Alex’s death to be read as a sacrifice rooted in love, even if the rushed structure makes that choice difficult for some viewers to accept.

Quick Recap
The Bottom Line
1923 ends with the Duttons retaining the ranch, but only after another generation pays an enormous price. Alex dies after giving birth to John Dutton II; Spencer survives to raise their son and defend the land; Whitfield is killed; Banner dies in a final act of protection; Elizabeth leaves; and Teonna gains freedom without recovering the life she lost. The closing dance is memory, not resurrection—the final reminder that the Dutton legacy is built as much from grief as from survival.
