Rory Kennedy’s wedding to Mark Bailey was not permanently canceled after John F. Kennedy Jr.’s death. The couple had planned to marry on July 17, 1999, at the Kennedy family compound in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. One day before the ceremony, JFK Jr., Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, and Carolyn’s sister, Lauren Bessette, died when the plane piloted by JFK Jr. crashed off the Massachusetts coast while they were traveling toward the wedding area.
The Hyannis Port wedding was postponed and replaced that weekend by prayer and mourning. Kennedy and Bailey later married in a small private ceremony in Greece on August 2, 1999.
The wedding planned for Hyannis Port
Rory Kennedy and Mark Bailey were scheduled to marry on Saturday, July 17, 1999, at the Kennedy family compound in Hyannis Port. Contemporary reports described a substantial gathering, expected to include approximately 275 guests.
Kennedy, the youngest child of Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy, was working as a producer and documentary filmmaker. Bailey was described in contemporary coverage as a writer, editor of books and film, and filmmaker. Their planned wedding was therefore expected to be a significant family event, drawing relatives and friends to Cape Cod.

But the ceremony never took place as planned. The reason was not a routine postponement or a change of venue: the tragedy involving JFK Jr. occurred while he, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, and Lauren Bessette were traveling toward Massachusetts to attend the wedding.
What happened on July 16, 1999?
On Friday, July 16, JFK Jr.’s plane crashed off the Massachusetts coast. JFK Jr., Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, and Lauren Bessette were killed. A chronology maintained by the Edward M. Kennedy Oral History Project identifies the group’s destination as Hyannis Port, where they were traveling for Rory Kennedy’s wedding.
The crash transformed the wedding weekend into a period of uncertainty and grief. The planned ceremony on July 17 did not go ahead. Instead, family members and guests gathered to pray while authorities searched for the missing aircraft and its occupants.
Was Rory Kennedy’s wedding canceled?
The most accurate answer is that the original Hyannis Port ceremony was postponed or abandoned after the crash, but Rory Kennedy and Mark Bailey did marry later.

Saying simply that Rory Kennedy’s wedding was canceled can therefore create the misleading impression that Kennedy and Bailey never married.
At Ethel Kennedy’s house, approximately 50 family members and three priests reportedly attended Mass and prayers. The gathering included prayers for the missing relatives and for Rory and Mark. The prepared wedding weekend became, instead, a setting for mourning and family support.
When and where did Rory Kennedy and Mark Bailey marry?
Kennedy and Bailey married on Monday, August 2, 1999, approximately two weeks after the crash. The ceremony took place in Greece at the Vardis Vardinoyiannis family compound in Ekali, an affluent northern suburb of Athens.
The ceremony was deliberately small and private. The Associated Press reported that the Vardinoyiannis family compound was used for the event and that the guest list was limited. The Irish Times also reported that Kennedy and Bailey married in Athens at Vardinoyiannis’s house.

It was distinct from the large event originally planned for Hyannis Port and was held in a far more restricted setting.
Who attended the Greek ceremony?
Available reports indicate that Ethel Kennedy attended. Vardis and Marianna Vardinoyiannis, described as family friends, were also reportedly present. However, the Vardinoyiannis family office declined to release a complete guest list.

That means no definitive public list of every guest can responsibly be provided. Reports emphasized the ceremony’s privacy, the security surrounding the compound, and the limited number of attendees. Claims that present a full guest list as established fact go beyond what the contemporary reporting confirms.
What is known about the honeymoon?
Some reports connected the Vardinoyiannis family’s yacht with a possible honeymoon cruise. The Associated Press said the family office would neither confirm nor deny reports of a honeymoon cruise and reported that the family had suggested use of the yacht after the original wedding was disrupted.

Those details should remain qualified. The available reporting does not establish a confirmed honeymoon itinerary, and there is no reliable basis for stating as fact that Kennedy and Bailey took a particular cruise.
Why was JFK Jr. traveling to the wedding?
JFK Jr. was Rory Kennedy’s older brother. His trip toward Massachusetts was connected to the family wedding planned for the following day. Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and her sister, Lauren, were traveling with him.
This connection explains why the tragedy became inseparable from accounts of Kennedy’s wedding. The plane crash occurred immediately before the ceremony and involved family members who were expected at the event. It does not mean, however, that the crash ended Kennedy and Bailey’s plans to marry permanently. The couple later chose a private ceremony in Greece.

Mark Bailey was described around the time of the wedding as a writer, editor of books and film, and filmmaker. Later biographical accounts describe Kennedy and Bailey as professional collaborators and the parents of three children. Those later details provide context for their lives together, but they should not be confused with the limited information available in the immediate wedding reports.
What the public record does—and does not—establish
The contemporary reporting supports several central facts:
- The original wedding was scheduled for July 17, 1999, in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts.
- JFK Jr., Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, and Lauren Bessette died in a plane crash on July 16 while traveling toward the wedding area.
- The planned ceremony did not proceed, and the family gathered for Mass and prayer.
- Rory Kennedy and Mark Bailey later married on August 2, 1999.
- The later ceremony was private and took place at the Vardinoyiannis family compound in Ekali, outside Athens.
- Ethel Kennedy and members of the Vardinoyiannis family were reportedly among those present, but no complete official guest list was released.
By contrast, the public record does not reliably establish the couple’s exact vows, wedding attire, a complete list of attendees, a confirmed honeymoon itinerary, or the private emotional details of the ceremony. Those elements should not be added merely to make the story more dramatic.
