Don’t Move is a 2024 Netflix survival thriller about Iris, a grieving woman who is injected with a fictional paralytic agent and given roughly 20 minutes before the drug progressively takes away her ability to move, speak, and defend herself. As a killer named Richard closes in through an isolated forest, the film turns ordinary survival tasks into a race against the loss of physical control.
Directed by Brian Netto and Adam Schindler, the 92-minute film works best as a tightly focused suspense experiment: its central question is not whether Iris can overpower her pursuer, but whether she can keep thinking and acting while her body steadily stops cooperating. The result is a pulpy, sometimes implausible thriller whose strongest ideas connect physical paralysis with emotional paralysis.
What is Don’t Move about?
Iris is visiting an isolated natural setting while grieving a devastating personal loss. There, she meets Richard, a stranger who initially appears helpful. His apparent concern becomes a trap when he injects her with a paralytic drug and reveals himself as a predator.
The drug creates the film’s central countdown. Iris stays conscious, but the agent gradually limits her physical abilities. Moving becomes more difficult, speech becomes harder, and even small actions require planning. She must use whatever remains of her mobility to escape, hide, attract help, drive, swim, and protect herself before the paralysis becomes complete.

The story is framed around the Big Sur area, although the film was not shot in California. Production location records identify Bulgaria, including the Zlatnite Mostove area in Sofia City Province, as part of the movie’s filming locations. Big Sur is the story’s narrative geography, not the production’s confirmed shooting location.
Why the premise works
Don’t Move builds suspense from a restriction that most thrillers try to avoid: its protagonist cannot rely on speed, strength, or conventional action-movie movement. The film instead makes small physical problems feel consequential. Reaching an object, staying hidden, communicating with another person, or getting behind the wheel can become a major obstacle when every minute brings more loss of control.
The filmmakers structure much of the experience around an approximate real-time countdown. That approach gives the thriller a clear mechanical engine. Richard does not need to create a complicated plan; he only needs to keep pursuing Iris while the drug does much of the work for him.
The concept also creates uncertainty about what Iris can still accomplish. The threat is not simply that she might be caught. It is that she may remain alert long after she loses the ability to respond. That gap between consciousness and physical control supplies the film’s most distinctive tension.
Kelsey Asbille’s performance as Iris
Kelsey Asbille carries most of the film. Iris has to express fear, calculation, pain, frustration, and renewed determination while losing the normal tools of performance: broad movement and extended dialogue.
As the paralysis advances, the film increasingly depends on eye movement, breathing, facial tension, limited gestures, and improvised physical actions. Asbille’s performance gives the middle section its emotional force because the audience has to read Iris’s decisions through increasingly restricted signals.
Iris is also more than a generic thriller survivor. Her grief has left her emotionally immobilized before Richard ever attacks her. The physical crisis eventually forces her to choose between surrender and continued action, making survival both an external objective and an internal turning point.

Finn Wittrock and the threat of Richard
Finn Wittrock plays Richard as a manipulator who uses helpfulness as camouflage. His introduction creates uncertainty: Iris cannot immediately know whether he is offering assistance or engineering her vulnerability. Once his intentions become clear, that uncertainty turns into a more direct predator-and-prey dynamic.
Richard’s effectiveness comes less from elaborate characterization than from the way he exploits Iris’s weakening condition. He can pursue her patiently because the drug has imposed a deadline she cannot escape by simply hiding for a short time.

Is the paralytic drug medically realistic?
The film’s drug is a fictional thriller device, and its exact medical behavior should not be treated as a scientifically established depiction of paralysis. The available production information supports the movie’s premise and countdown structure, not a clinical claim about how a real paralytic agent would affect a person.
That distinction matters because the film prioritizes suspense over pharmacological explanation. Its useful question is not whether the drug follows a medically verified timeline, but how much tension can be created by giving a conscious character less and less control over her body.

The title operates literally and metaphorically.
On the literal level, Iris is under pressure not to move because movement can increase the danger and because the drug is progressively disabling her body. Every action becomes a calculation: move now while she can, or conserve control for a later emergency.
On the metaphorical level, Iris begins in a state of grief and apparent hopelessness. She is not merely trying to remain alive; she is trying to recover the desire to live. Richard’s attack forces that conflict into physical form. Her eventual resistance represents a movement away from passive despair and toward self-preserving agency.

That idea explains why the film’s survival story is also a psychological character study. Iris’s victory is not only that she escapes a killer. It is that she stops treating survival as something that belongs to somebody else.
Production design and the high-concept structure
The movie’s compact design is one of its practical strengths. A limited cast, a small number of locations, and a single escalating physical problem allow the story to generate suspense without depending on a large-scale spectacle.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Interviews with the directors describe the premise as attractive partly because it was flexible and scalable for production. The creative challenge was to keep the film propulsive even when the central character had to remain still for extended periods. That challenge shapes the filmmaking: objects, terrain, distance, timing, and sound become as important as movement.
The forest setting also gives the story isolation without requiring a completely empty frame. Iris may be surrounded by natural space, but that space does not automatically provide safety. It can conceal her, slow her down, or make it harder for anyone else to find her.
Reception: a stronger premise than screenplay for some viewers
When checked, Rotten Tomatoes listed Don’t Move at 74% from 50 critics and 40% from more than 1,000 audience ratings. Those numbers are volatile and should be rechecked before publication if they are used as a current score.
The gap suggests a useful distinction in the response to the film. Critics were more receptive to the way the movie extracts tension from its self-imposed limitations. Some audience reactions were less forgiving about plausibility, characterization, or the screenplay. In other words, the central mechanism is easier to admire than every step of the plot built around it.

It is not a forensic account of a real medical emergency, and it does not need to be. Its appeal is the pressure created by a simple question: what can a person still do when time is running out and the body is shutting down?

Netflix performance
Netflix reported that Don’t Move held the No. 1 position on its English Films List for a second week and recorded 28 million views during that week. That is a significant streaming-performance signal, but it is not theatrical revenue, lifetime viewership, or an independent measure of the film’s quality.

The following section reveals the ending.
Iris ultimately survives Richard’s pursuit. The paralytic effect wears off, allowing her to regain control of her body, and she defeats the immediate threat posed by Richard.
In the final exchange, Iris thanks Richard. The line is deliberately ambiguous and works in two directions. On the surface, it is a taunt aimed at the killer: his attack has failed, and Iris is now in a position to confront him. At a deeper level, she recognizes that the ordeal forced her to recover a desire to live that grief had weakened.

The ending therefore resolves two forms of paralysis. Iris is freed physically as the drug’s effects fade, but she is also freed emotionally from the passivity and hopelessness that defined her at the start. Richard intended to reduce her to a helpless victim; instead, the crisis gives her a reason to act.
This does not make Richard a beneficial figure or excuse his violence. The point is that Iris reclaims meaning from an ordeal he inflicted on her. Her “thank you” is simultaneously bitter, strategic, and psychologically revealing.
Who should watch it?
Don’t Move is a good fit for viewers who enjoy contained survival thrillers, race-against-time stories, and high-concept films built around one physical limitation. It is especially suited to audiences who value escalating suspense and performance-driven tension over elaborate world-building.
Viewers who need strict medical realism or deeply developed supporting characters may find the movie less convincing. Its strongest achievement is the suspense mechanism; its weaker elements are the points where the surrounding plot has to stretch to keep that mechanism running.
