Michelle Pfeiffer and her husband, attorney and television producer David E. Kelley, have two children: daughter Claudia Rose and son John Henry. Pfeiffer adopted Claudia as an infant in 1993, before marrying Kelley later that year. The couple welcomed John Henry in 1994.
Although both children are adults, they have largely stayed out of the entertainment industry and away from sustained public attention. Here is what has been reliably reported about Pfeiffer’s family, her approach to parenting, and her decision to step back from acting while her children were young.
Who are Michelle Pfeiffer’s children?
Michelle Pfeiffer has two children with David E. Kelley:
| Child | Family detail | Year |

Claudia Rose
Pfeiffer adopted Claudia as an infant in 1993. The adoption took place before Pfeiffer’s marriage to Kelley on November 13, 1993, although the couple were already together when the adoption process was underway.
Contemporary interviews described Claudia’s christening as taking place on Pfeiffer and Kelley’s wedding day. That detail is part of the family’s early chronology: Pfeiffer became a mother first, and then married Kelley later the same year.
Public sources generally identify her as Claudia Rose. Some secondary databases and entertainment reports use a longer surname, including Claudia Rose Pfeiffer or Claudia Rose Kelley, but naming conventions are inconsistent. “Claudia Rose” is the clearest and safest name to use without making a claim about her current legal surname.
Claudia has occasionally appeared in brief public references or photographs shared by her mother, but she has generally maintained a private life. Claims about her education, career, or other personal details circulate online, yet those details have not been independently confirmed through a primary institutional or personal source. They should not be treated as established facts.
John Henry
John Henry was born in 1994, nearly a year after Pfeiffer and Kelley married. He is the couple’s second child and their son.

In a 1997 interview, Pfeiffer said that John Henry was named after David E. Kelley’s father. That is the most reliable explanation for the name. Later celebrity databases sometimes add a generational suffix or describe the family connection differently, but the cautious wording is simply that he was named after Kelley’s father.
John Henry has remained especially private. Reliable public reporting provides little confirmed information about his work, home, relationships, or day-to-day life. There is no reason to fill those gaps with unverified celebrity-database claims.
Are Claudia and John close?
In a social-media post reported in 2021, Pfeiffer described Claudia and John as “best friends” and “inseparable.” She also said they were about 18 months apart in age.
Those are Pfeiffer’s own descriptions of their relationship, rather than an independently measured account. They nevertheless offer the clearest public glimpse of the siblings’ bond. Both have otherwise lived largely outside the celebrity spotlight.
Why did Michelle Pfeiffer take a break from acting?
Pfeiffer has repeatedly connected her reduced acting schedule with raising her children. In a 2021 interview with The New Yorker, she explained that what began as a planned pause from acting stretched into a much longer hiatus because family life was consuming and important to her.

She said that, when considering a job, she weighed practical family questions: where the production would take place, how long she would be away, and whether she could return home. Those decisions helped determine which roles she accepted while Claudia and John were growing up.
Pfeiffer also said she deliberately kept her children separate from her film career when they were young. She did not want them to feel that her celebrity status defined their family life. Later, she realized that they knew less about her work than some of their friends did, so she began introducing them to age-appropriate films.

Michelle Pfeiffer is now a grandmother
On September 29, 2025, Pfeiffer said during an appearance on the SmartLess podcast that she had become a grandmother in 2024. She described the experience as joyful and said it had influenced the way she thought about accepting lengthy acting commitments.
Pfeiffer’s public announcement identified the family milestone but did not establish through a primary family announcement which of her children is the parent. Some secondary reports connect the grandchild with Claudia, but that detail should be treated cautiously unless Pfeiffer or a family representative confirms it directly.
There is also little reliable public information about the grandchild, and privacy is especially important when discussing a family member who has not chosen a public role.

Why so little is known about Pfeiffer’s children?
Claudia and John were raised by one of Hollywood’s most recognizable actors, but Pfeiffer has generally avoided turning them into public figures. Her interviews indicate that she made a conscious effort to separate her work from their childhood and to make family decisions around their needs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAs a result, the strongest verified information concerns their names, the adoption and birth chronology, Pfeiffer’s comments about parenting, and the family milestones she has chosen to disclose. Exact occupations, residences, educational histories, partners, medical information, and detailed information about the grandchild should not be repeated without direct and reputable sourcing.
The limited public record is not evidence that there is a hidden story. It is primarily evidence that Pfeiffer’s adult children have maintained boundaries around their private lives.
