The ESPN blackout on YouTube TV is over. Disney-owned channels disappeared from the service on October 30, 2025, during a carriage dispute between Disney and YouTube. On November 13, Disney CFO Hugh Johnston warned that negotiations “could go for a little while,” but the companies reached a multi-year agreement the next day. ESPN, ABC, FX, Disney channels, and other affected networks began returning on November 14, 2025.
That makes the original headline historical rather than a description of a current outage as of August 11, 2026. If ESPN is not working for you now, check your plan, account activation, and device before assuming the 2025 dispute has returned.
What happened to ESPN on YouTube TV?
Disney and YouTube TV failed to renew their distribution agreement before the previous deal expired. As a result, Disney-owned programming went dark for YouTube TV subscribers beginning October 30, 2025.
The affected programming included ESPN and its related networks, ABC, FX, Disney-branded channels, Freeform, and National Geographic channels. This was not described as a technical failure in ESPN’s app or YouTube TV’s streaming infrastructure. It was a carriage dispute: a disagreement over the commercial terms under which a television distributor carries a programmer’s channels.

Disney argued that YouTube TV should pay fair rates for its programming. YouTube said Disney was seeking expensive terms that could increase customer prices and reduce consumer choice. Those were the companies’ competing positions, not independently established findings.
Why did the Disney executive say it “could go for a little while”?
On November 13, 2025, Disney CFO Hugh Johnston told analysts that negotiations with YouTube TV “could go for a little while.” The comment did not provide a specific timetable. It meant that Disney was prepared for the talks to continue beyond the initial blackout, not that the blackout was guaranteed to last for a particular number of days or weeks.
Disney CEO Bob Iger defended Disney’s offer and said the company wanted to remain on YouTube TV without interruption. YouTube maintained that Disney’s proposed economics would put pressure on prices and limit customers’ choices.
The warning became obsolete quickly. Disney and YouTube TV announced a settlement on November 14, one day after Johnston’s comment.

How long did the ESPN blackout last?
The blackout began on October 30, 2025, and the settlement was announced on November 14, 2025. Contemporary reporting described the interruption as lasting more than two weeks. Counting the calendar dates, it spanned roughly 15 days, although the exact count depends on whether the start and restoration dates are counted inclusively.
The November 14 agreement did not necessarily mean that every channel and recording appeared simultaneously for every subscriber. YouTube said ABC, ESPN, FX, and recordings stored in subscribers’ libraries were returning over the course of that day.
What did the settlement include?
Disney said the multi-year agreement included several important provisions:
Rank #2
- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
- YouTube TV would carry Disney’s full linear network portfolio, including all ESPN networks, ABC, Disney-branded channels, Freeform, FX Networks, and National Geographic channels.
- YouTube TV subscribers would receive access to ESPN’s new direct-to-consumer Unlimited Plan at no additional cost, subject to the applicable activation and account requirements.
- Selected live and on-demand ESPN Unlimited programming would be accessible inside YouTube TV.
- Some Disney networks could be offered through genre-specific packages.
- Certain YouTube TV offerings could include the Disney+, Hulu bundle.
YouTube separately emphasized the return of ABC, ESPN, FX, and subscribers’ existing recordings. The agreement therefore addressed more than simply restoring one sports channel: it re-established YouTube TV’s broader relationship with Disney’s network portfolio.
Is ESPN still unavailable on YouTube TV in 2026?
No—the 2025 blackout has been resolved. The multi-year agreement restored Disney programming beginning in November 2025. An ESPN problem that occurs in August 2026 should not automatically be attributed to that dispute.
The current issue is more likely to involve ESPN Unlimited integration, plan eligibility, or account activation. YouTube’s February 2026 announcement described ESPN Unlimited as coming to its Sports Plan in the fall. ESPN’s July 2026 provider-support information listed YouTube TV as a supported provider and provided an activation path. Together, those updates indicate an integration and entitlement pathway, but they do not guarantee that every subscriber has identical access at every moment.
Availability can depend on:
- the YouTube TV plan you have;
- whether ESPN Unlimited has been activated and linked to your account;
- your location and local-channel availability;
- which content YouTube TV carries under the agreement; and
- the stage of the product rollout.
ESPN also warns that a provider-based entitlement cannot include programming the provider does not carry. In other words, access to ESPN Unlimited does not necessarily mean that every ESPN-related stream is available through every YouTube TV plan or interface.
What to do if ESPN is not working on YouTube TV now
- Confirm that you are using the correct YouTube TV account. Sign out and back in if the app is showing a plan or entitlement that does not match your subscription.
- Check your YouTube TV plan. A channel or ESPN Unlimited feature may depend on the plan you selected. Do not assume that a current technical problem means the 2025 channel dispute has restarted.
- Activate ESPN through your eligible provider. ESPN’s support instructions say eligible provider customers may need to activate ESPN and connect a MyDisney login. Follow the activation and account-linking prompts rather than creating an unrelated standalone login.
- Check whether the content is actually part of the provider entitlement. ESPN notes that provider-carried access may not include content the provider does not carry.
- Update or restart the app and device. Close YouTube TV or ESPN, restart the streaming device, and install pending app or operating-system updates. This can address an app-session problem, but it will not add channels excluded from your plan.
- Check local-channel limitations. ABC availability can vary by market, unlike the national ESPN networks. A local ABC issue is not necessarily evidence of a Disney–YouTube TV carriage problem.
- Review recent subscription changes. ESPN warns that canceling or changing an eligible provider plan can cancel the associated ESPN subscription or entitlement.
If these steps do not resolve the problem, check the current ESPN and YouTube TV support pages for an account-specific message or a genuine service incident.
What equipment do you need to watch?
YouTube TV and the ESPN app can run on compatible smart TVs, streaming devices, and game consoles. If your television does not support the required app, a streaming media player can provide the app platform you are missing.
For example, an Amazon Fire TV Stick is a streaming media device that can be used to run supported television apps on a compatible TV. It is an accessory for accessing the service—not a substitute for a qualifying YouTube TV or ESPN subscription. Buying one will not restore a channel during a carriage dispute and will not provide ESPN programming by itself.

Can you use another provider instead?
ESPN’s provider-support materials list several other providers that can be used for ESPN activation, including Hulu + Live TV, DIRECTV, Fubo, Spectrum, Verizon FiOS, U-verse, Cox, and Comcast Xfinity.

Plan prices and availability can change, and some services may be limited by region.
For sports-focused households, compare the specific channels and events you watch—not merely whether a provider advertises “sports.” Check ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SEC Network, ACC Network, ABC, regional sports networks, recording rules, simultaneous streams, and any separate direct-to-consumer entitlement before switching.
If you mainly need ABC
Viewers who primarily want local ABC broadcasts may also investigate an over-the-air antenna, subject to local signal strength and the location of the broadcast transmitter. An antenna cannot replace ESPN’s cable networks or ESPN Unlimited. It is relevant only to eligible local broadcast reception, and availability should be checked by ZIP code before purchase.

Streaming television looks like an internet service, but many of its channels still depend on traditional programming agreements. A distributor such as YouTube TV negotiates with network owners for the right to carry channels. When an agreement expires without a renewal, the distributor may remove the channels even though the app, internet connection, and rest of the service continue to work normally.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That creates several different consumer effects:
- Live channels disappear. Subscribers may lose access to a network immediately when the agreement expires.
- Recorded programs may be affected. YouTube said recordings in subscribers’ libraries were returning as part of the November 14 restoration.
- Prices and packages can change. The companies’ dispute centered partly on the economic terms and the possibility of higher prices or narrower choices.
- Separate app access may not solve the problem. A subscription to one service does not automatically provide the rights carried by another provider, and provider-linked ESPN access still depends on activation and entitlements.
- Credits are not permanent remedies. YouTube discussed a possible $20 credit during the 2025 dispute, but that historical discussion should not be treated as a current offer.
The key distinction: blackout versus technical outage
Calling the event an “ESPN outage” is understandable from a viewer’s perspective, but technically it was a programming blackout caused by a carriage disagreement. A technical outage usually involves an app, server, network, or device malfunction. The 2025 event involved the rights and commercial terms governing whether YouTube TV could distribute Disney’s programming.
That distinction changes the solution. Restarting a router cannot restore channels removed because a distribution agreement expired. Conversely, if ESPN is missing for one account while other YouTube TV subscribers can access it, the more likely causes are plan eligibility, account linking, a local-channel limitation, or an app problem.

Frequently Asked Questions
Did ESPN leave YouTube TV in 2025?
Yes. Disney-owned channels, including ESPN, ABC, and FX, went dark on YouTube TV on October 30, 2025, after the companies failed to renew their distribution agreement. They reached a multi-year agreement on November 14, 2025, and the channels were restored.
How long was ESPN blacked out on YouTube TV?
The interruption ran from October 30 until restoration began after the November 14, 2025 agreement—roughly 15 calendar days, depending on how the start and restoration dates are counted.
Does YouTube TV include ESPN Unlimited?
The settlement created access for YouTube TV subscribers, and YouTube’s 2026 plan announcement described ESPN Unlimited as part of its Sports Plan. Exact access can depend on the subscriber’s plan, activation, account linking, provider-carried content, geography, and rollout status.
Can I watch ESPN on YouTube TV without activating an ESPN account?
You may need to activate ESPN and connect a MyDisney login to use eligible provider-based access. Follow ESPN’s current provider-activation instructions and make sure the linked account matches the eligible YouTube TV subscription.
Will a Fire TV Stick give me ESPN for free?
No. A Fire TV Stick can provide a compatible platform for supported streaming apps, but it does not include an ESPN or YouTube TV subscription and cannot resolve a channel-rights dispute.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Disney’s November 13, 2025 warning that negotiations “could go for a little while” referred to a short-lived carriage dispute, not a continuing ESPN outage. Disney and YouTube TV reached a multi-year agreement on November 14, 2025, restoring ESPN, ABC, FX, and other Disney networks. In 2026, troubleshoot plan eligibility and ESPN account activation first; do not treat the old blackout as the explanation for every current access problem.
