Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 is complete. ABC aired all 18 episodes in the United States from October 9, 2025, through May 7, 2026, ending with “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” The season is not the medical drama’s final chapter: ABC renewed Grey’s Anatomy for Season 23 on March 31, 2026.
Season 22 followed the aftermath of the Season 21 hospital explosion, brought Kate Walsh back as Addison Montgomery, and ended with major changes for Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman. Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver departed after the finale, although the production has not described their characters’ return as permanently impossible.

What Season 22 is about
The season begins immediately after the catastrophic explosion that closed Season 21. Grey Sloan Memorial’s doctors are forced to treat patients while also trying to protect themselves and make difficult surgical decisions in a damaged hospital.
That disaster gives Season 22 a clear reconstruction arc. The doctors must deal with the physical work of rebuilding Grey Sloan, the emotional consequences of the explosion, and the challenge of restoring professional order after a crisis that affected both staff and patients. The recovery story runs alongside the relationship conflicts and career pressures that remain central to the series.
The newer class of residents remains especially important. Simone Griffith, Lucas Adams, Jules Millin and Benson “Blue” Kwan continue to navigate training, competition, romance and the expectations placed on them as Grey Sloan’s next generation. Winston Ndugu is also included in ABC’s Season 22 cast material, while Trevor Jackson’s Wes Bryant expands the newer-resident ensemble and complicates Simone’s personal life.
Meredith Grey’s Alzheimer’s research remains another major thread. Meredith divides her professional life between Boston and Seattle, with laboratory access in Boston and an ongoing relationship with Grey Sloan. Her arrangement allows the show to keep Meredith central to its story even though Ellen Pompeo appears on screen in a limited recurring capacity rather than as a full-time presence.
Season 22 cast and characters
ABC’s official Season 22 listing includes the following principal performers and characters:
| Actor | Character | Season 22 status |
|---|---|---|
| Ellen Pompeo | Meredith Grey | Continued as the narrator and an executive producer, with limited on-screen appearances. |
| Chandra Wilson | Miranda Bailey | Returning principal cast member. |
| James Pickens Jr. | Richard Webber | Returning principal cast member. |
| Kevin McKidd | Owen Hunt | Returned for Season 22 and departed after the finale. |
| Caterina Scorsone | Amelia Shepherd | Returning principal cast member. |
| Camilla Luddington | Jo Wilson | Returning principal cast member. |
| Kim Raver | Teddy Altman | Returned for Season 22 and departed after the finale. |
| Chris Carmack | Atticus “Link” Lincoln | Returning cast member; the available reporting does not establish a permanent exit. |
| Anthony Hill | Winston Ndugu | Returning principal cast member. |
| Alexis Floyd | Simone Griffith | Returning resident. |
| Harry Shum Jr. | Benson “Blue” Kwan | Central resident character whose professional status changes in the finale. |
| Adelaide Kane | Jules Millin | Returning resident. |
| Niko Terho | Lucas Adams | Returning resident. |
Jason George continued as Ben Warren and Debbie Allen appeared as Catherine Avery, according to broader Season 22 cast reporting. Scott Speedman also continued to appear as Nick Marsh in connection with Meredith’s storyline. Pre-season reporting indicated that Speedman’s other ABC project was not expected to prevent his recurring Grey’s Anatomy role.
Meredith Grey’s reduced screen time
Ellen Pompeo remained closely involved with the series even while appearing less frequently on screen. She continued to narrate episodes and serve as an executive producer. TV Guide estimated that Meredith would appear in approximately seven Season 22 episodes, but that figure was a secondary estimate, not an official ABC episode guarantee.
Meredith’s Boston-Seattle arrangement is therefore important to understanding the season. Her physical absence from some Grey Sloan stories does not mean that the character has permanently left the show.

Returning and guest characters
Kate Walsh returned as Addison Montgomery in Episode 10, “Strip That Down,” which aired January 30, 2026. Shondaland confirmed Walsh’s return, and ABC’s episode guide identifies Addison’s appearance. It was announced as a guest appearance, not as a permanent promotion to the regular cast.
Jamie-Lynn Sigler also joined the season as Dr. Laura Kaplan, a urologist connected to Richard Webber’s storyline.
Sophia Bush’s Dr. Cass Beckman was introduced as a recurring trauma surgeon connected to Seattle Presbyterian during Season 21. She should not automatically be counted as confirmed Season 22 main cast based on the official Season 22 listing. Likewise, Jake Borelli’s Levi Schmitt and Midori Francis’s Mika Yasuda were not part of the listed Season 22 main cast after their Season 21 departures. Earlier coverage did not categorically rule out a future return, but that is different from a confirmed Season 22 casting announcement.
How to watch Season 22
In the United States, ABC directs viewers to watch Grey’s Anatomy on Hulu for full episodes. The season originally premiered on ABC at 10/9c on Thursdays and concluded with its 18th episode on May 7, 2026. Hulu availability, subscription requirements and episode access may vary by location and can change over time.

ABC’s official episode guide is the best place to verify the season’s complete chronology, titles and episode loglines. Among the confirmed milestones are Episode 2, “We Built This City”; Episode 10, “Strip That Down,” featuring Addison; and Episode 18, “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”
Optional fan resource
Viewers interested in the show’s long production history may want to look at How to Save a Life: The Inside Story of Grey’s Anatomy by Lynette Rice. It is a behind-the-scenes book about the series and its creation, not a Season 22 episode guide, so it works best as supplementary reading for fans revisiting the show’s legacy.
Spoilers: what happens in the Season 22 finale?
Warning: this section discusses major Season 22 plot developments.
Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman leave Grey Sloan
Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver left Grey’s Anatomy after the Season 22 finale as Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman. Variety reported that the departures were creative decisions made after production completed the season.
The story gives Owen and Teddy an emotional conclusion as a couple. Shonda Rhimes described the pair as receiving the happy ending their long-running story deserved, while showrunner Meg Marinis framed the finale as the end of their current story rather than an absolute prohibition on future appearances. In practical terms, both actors are departing the regular ensemble after Season 22, but the wording leaves room for a later guest return.
Blue is fired, but his future is not fully closed
Benson “Blue” Kwan is fired in the finale storyline after administering an experimental drug against FDA orders, according to post-finale reporting from TV Insider. That is a major professional consequence for the character, but it should not be presented as confirmation that Harry Shum Jr. has permanently left the series.
The finale sends Blue back into the action during a bridge-collapse emergency, where he helps the medical team despite having already been fired. The distinction matters: a character can lose a hospital position without the actor being removed from the show, and the Season 23 reporting continued to list Shum among the performers associated with the returning ensemble.

The bridge-collapse emergency reunites the doctors
The finale uses a bridge-collapse crisis to bring the medical team together and create several deliberately open-ended storylines. The disaster functions as both a large-scale medical emergency and a transition point for the series after the departures of Owen and Teddy.
Not every character’s future is resolved on screen, and the available reporting does not support declaring Link, Nick, Meredith or any other character a permanent departure merely because the finale leaves their next steps uncertain.

ABC renewed Grey’s Anatomy for Season 23 on March 31, 2026. That announcement definitively establishes that Season 22 was not a series finale.
Trade reporting on the renewal identified a continuing ensemble that includes Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr., Camilla Luddington, Caterina Scorsone, Jason George, Chris Carmack, Anthony Hill, Alexis Floyd, Harry Shum Jr., Adelaide Kane, Niko Terho and Trevor Jackson. This is the latest reported lineup, not a guarantee that every performer will appear in every episode or that contracts and episode orders cannot change.
Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver were separately identified as leaving after Season 22. Their departures reshape the senior leadership group at Grey Sloan, while the unresolved status of Blue and the continuing Boston-Seattle storyline give Season 23 several immediate narrative launch points.

Confirmed facts versus earlier speculation
Several questions circulated before Season 22 aired, including whether Link would survive the Season 21 explosion, how much Meredith would appear, whether Sandra Oh might return as Cristina Yang, and what would happen to the residents. Those questions should now be separated from confirmed reporting.
- Confirmed: Season 22 was renewed, aired for 18 episodes, included Addison’s return, ended on May 7, 2026, and was followed by the Season 23 renewal.
- Confirmed: Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver departed after the Season 22 finale.
- Not confirmed: a permanent departure for Link, Blue, Nick or Meredith based only on unresolved finale threads.
- Not confirmed: Sandra Oh’s return as Cristina Yang. Earlier coverage noted fan interest, but Oh has repeatedly rejected the idea of returning.
- Not yet announced: a Season 23 premiere date and definitive episode order.
