The image, posted on X by her grandson Joe Kennedy III, showed Kennedy near the center-left of a group of children and grandchildren, wearing a light-blue sweater. Joe Kennedy III described her as the “world’s most amazing Gramma.”
The picture captured a private family celebration that was made public through social media—not a formally announced public appearance. It became especially poignant after Kennedy died six months later, on October 10, 2024, at age 96.
What the birthday photograph showed
The publicly shared photograph showed Ethel Kennedy surrounded by members of her extended family. Contemporaneous reports placed her near the center-left of the group and noted her light-blue sweater. The image was presented as a warm birthday gathering, with children and grandchildren around the Kennedy family matriarch.
Joe Kennedy III shared the photograph on X on April 11, 2024, to mark his grandmother’s 96th birthday. His message called her the “world’s most amazing Gramma.” The post made the family image widely visible, but the available reporting does not establish the exact location, the precise time the photograph was taken, or the identity of every person pictured.
Those limits matter. The gathering should be described as a private family celebration or family photograph, rather than as an official Kennedy family reunion or a public event. The photograph can be discussed editorially, but anyone wishing to reproduce, download, alter, or commercially reuse it should first confirm the applicable copyright and platform permissions.

Why the image drew attention
Ethel Kennedy had become less frequently photographed in public by the time of her 96th birthday. As the widow of Robert F. Kennedy and the mother of 11 children, she had long been one of the most recognizable members of the extended Kennedy family. The birthday image offered something different from the family’s better-known political and ceremonial photographs: an informal, family-centered glimpse of Kennedy at home among younger generations.
Her daughter Kerry Kennedy also shared a video montage around the birthday. Reports said the montage used Taylor Swift’s 2012 song “Starlight,” which has a particular association with Kennedy family imagery and history. The montage was separate from Joe Kennedy III’s photograph, however, and should not be treated as the same piece of birthday material.
Ethel Kennedy’s family and public life
Ethel Skakel married Robert F. Kennedy in 1950. They had 11 children. Following Robert Kennedy’s assassination in June 1968, Ethel raised the family while continuing to participate in public advocacy.

Her later work was closely associated with human-rights and social-justice causes. The Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights organization identifies her as a founder and credits her with helping carry forward the human-rights legacy connected to her husband. That work made her more than a figure of Kennedy family history: she became an advocate in her own right.
Still, the birthday photograph is best understood on its own terms. It was not a statement about a political campaign or a formal appearance by a public official. It was a family image that briefly brought attention to an elderly matriarch whose life had been shaped by both private loss and decades of public service.
Her death later in 2024
Ethel Kennedy died on October 10, 2024, at age 96. Her family said she died from complications related to a stroke she suffered earlier that month. Joe Kennedy III announced her death, writing that the family was mourning their grandmother.
