Best Streaming Services in 2025 (U.S.): Which Subscription Is Right for You?

Netflix was the best all-purpose streaming service for most U.S. viewers in 2025, but Max, Apple TV, Disney+, Hulu, Prime Video, Peacock, and Paramount+ each win for different viewing priorities. Here is how to choose and save.

Netflix was the best overall streaming service for most U.S. households in 2025 because it combined broad entertainment, documentaries, international programming, originals, downloads, games, and strong discovery features in one subscription. But it was not the best choice for everyone: Apple TV stood out for premium originals, Max for HBO and prestige television, Disney+ for families, Hulu for current television, Prime Video for existing Amazon Prime members, Peacock for NBC and sports, and Paramount+ for CBS, UEFA Champions League, UFC, and Showtime-related programming.

This is a 2025-focused guide for U.S. viewers, not a claim that one service is permanently best or that every price below remains current. The service and feature research was checked on August 11, 2026. Figures identified as later verification prices are included only to clarify how plans subsequently changed; they should not be mistaken for 2025 prices.

The short answer

Service Best for Why choose it Main limitation
Netflix Most households and documentary viewers who want one broad service The safest all-purpose mix of originals, licensed shows, films, documentaries, international titles, and discovery tools The catalog changes by country and over time; the best video quality requires Premium
Apple TV Premium, original-focused television A compact service centered on exclusive originals, weekly releases, and an ad-free experience Its smaller catalog is less useful as a sole subscription for viewers who want a deep archive
Max HBO, prestige television, Warner Bros., and selected sports Strong depth across HBO, Warner Bros., DC, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, and related libraries 4K, Dolby Atmos, and the largest download allowance require Premium; rights vary
Disney+ Families and franchise entertainment Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic in one family-oriented service Less compelling as a standalone subscription for adults uninterested in those brands
Prime Video Existing Amazon Prime members Video is part of a wider membership with included titles, rentals, purchases, and add-on channels Search results mix included and separately paid content
Hulu Current television and FX-oriented viewing A strong complement for current-season programming, FX material, Hulu Originals, dramas, and comedies Its value depends heavily on the current lineup or a useful bundle
Peacock NBC, Bravo, Universal movies, and targeted sports A focused lower-cost option for NBCUniversal programming and live sports Less convincing as a single all-purpose service; Premium Plus still has ad exceptions
Paramount+ CBS, UEFA Champions League, UFC, Showtime, and Paramount franchises One of the clearest choices when its particular sports, network, and film rights match your interests Not a natural first subscription for households that do not want those specific rights

How this ranking was decided

“Best” depends on what a household actually watches. This ranking weighs catalog breadth, original programming, documentary and factual-content relevance, family usefulness, sports and network rights, plan design, bundle value, and how easy it is to find something worth watching. It does not treat a service’s catalog as a fixed number or assume that the most hours automatically deliver the best value.

No service is called the “largest” here. Catalog counts are difficult to compare consistently, and titles move in and out by country and by date. Likewise, Netflix’s viewing figures show reach and engagement, not an objective score for artistic quality or quality per dollar.

1. Netflix: best overall

Netflix was the strongest default recommendation for a household choosing one general-purpose service in 2025. Its mix included original and licensed television, movies, documentaries, international programming, games, downloads, and recommendation features. That breadth matters for families and roommates with different tastes: one person can watch a documentary while another looks for a scripted series, a film, or international content.

Netflix also had unusually strong evidence of sustained use. Netflix reported more than 95 billion hours watched in the first half of 2025 and 96 billion hours in the second half. In the latter period, KPop Demon Hunters reached 482 million views and Stranger Things season five reached 94 million views. Those numbers demonstrate exceptional reach and engagement, but they should not be read as proof that every Netflix title is better than the competition.

For documentary viewers, Netflix is the safest first subscription when documentaries need to coexist with a broad entertainment library. It is particularly suitable when you do not want to plan your subscription around one specific series or network.

Netflix plans and trade-offs

For later plan verification, Netflix listed Standard with ads at $8.99 per month, Standard at $19.99, and Premium at $26.99. Standard provides 1080p, while Premium adds 4K/HDR and the largest simultaneous-device allowance. These are later verification prices, not a 2025 price table.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical weakness is cost at the top end. If you have a 4K television and care about HDR, the lower-priced plan may not deliver the experience you expect. The catalog also varies by region, and a title available in the United States may not be available elsewhere.

2. Apple TV: best for premium originals

Apple TV was the best specialist choice for viewers who preferred a smaller, original-focused service over a huge mixed catalog. Its official service description emphasized hundreds of exclusive Apple Original shows and movies, weekly releases, no advertising, and family sharing with up to five additional family members.

This makes Apple TV attractive to viewers who would rather follow a curated run of original dramas, science fiction, comedies, and prestige films than browse a large archive. Calling it a high-hit-rate service is an editorial recommendation, not a laboratory measurement: the important distinction is its concentration on exclusive originals rather than the size of its licensed library.

Roku Ultra, Ultimate Streaming Player - 4K Streaming Device for TV
  • Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
  • Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
  • The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
  • No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
  • Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.

For documentary fans, Apple TV makes the most sense when you want premium originals as part of a wider viewing mix. It is less suitable as the only subscription for someone who expects a large, constantly changing documentary archive or a deep selection of licensed television.

Apple TV price and account details

The later provider-page verification listed a seven-day trial followed by $12.99 per month, with an ad-free service and family sharing. Trial availability and price can change, so check the provider’s current signup page before subscribing. Do not assume that the service’s compact catalog makes it cheaper overall if you keep it year-round alongside several larger platforms.

3. Max: best for HBO and prestige television

Max was the strongest choice for households whose viewing starts with HBO. It also reaches into Warner Bros., DC, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Turner libraries, selected movies, and selected live sports. That combination gives it more depth than a service focused on one franchise or one network.

Max’s help information described more than 13,000 hours for Max plans. Sports are included on Standard and Premium, while Premium reserves 4K, Dolby Atmos, and larger download allowances. Sports availability and individual title rights still vary, so “sports included” should not be interpreted as every event or league being available.

Max is a particularly strong documentary choice when your interests overlap with HBO’s documentary and prestige programming, but it is not automatically the best service for every factual-content viewer. Its value is highest when you also want HBO series, Warner Bros. films, DC, or adult animation.

Max plans and the bundle question

Later plan verification listed Basic with Ads at $9.99 per month, Standard at $16.99, and Premium at $20.99. The higher tiers are important if picture quality, audio, or downloads matter to you.

The documented Disney+, Hulu, and Max bundle was another major value option: the advertising-supported version was listed at $16.99 per month, while the no-ads version was listed at $29.99 per month and combined Max Standard, Disney+ Premium, and Hulu No Ads. These bundle prices are date-sensitive. Compare them with the exact direct-billed plans you would otherwise buy, including taxes and any billing-channel differences.

4. Disney+: best for families and franchise entertainment

Disney+ was the clearest family-first recommendation in 2025. Its U.S. positioning centered on Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, and related brands. That gives families a predictable set of recognizable franchises and makes the service useful beyond children’s programming when adults want Marvel, Star Wars, or National Geographic content.

Disney+ is also more flexible for mixed households when purchased through a bundle with Hulu and, in some bundle options, ESPN. A family that would subscribe to Disney+ anyway may gain more value by comparing the bundle rather than treating Disney+ as an isolated children’s service.

For documentary viewers, National Geographic is the clearest reason to consider Disney+. It is especially appealing for households that want factual and nature-oriented programming alongside family films and franchise series. Adults with no interest in Disney-owned brands may find Netflix, Max, Hulu, or Prime Video more useful as a sole subscription.

5. Prime Video: best value when you already have Amazon Prime

Prime Video is most persuasive when evaluated as one part of Amazon Prime, not as a standalone video catalog. In 2025, the documented Prime price was $14.99 monthly or $139 annually, with Prime Video included alongside the membership’s other benefits.

The service combines subscription-included films and series with titles available to rent or buy, plus add-on channels. That mixture creates both flexibility and confusion. Before pressing play, check for the “included with Prime” label. A search result appearing inside the Prime Video app does not necessarily mean that the title is covered by the membership.

Prime Video is a practical choice for existing Prime members who want Amazon Originals such as Reacher or The Summer I Turned Pretty, occasional rentals, purchases, and a broad mixture of programming. It is less compelling if you are joining Prime solely for documentaries and do not use its other benefits.

6. Hulu: best for current television and FX

Hulu was better understood as a complement or bundle component than as the universal best streaming service. Its strengths were current-season television, Hulu Originals, FX-related programming, and adult-oriented dramas and comedies.

Roku Streaming Stick Plus with Voice Remote - 4K & HDR10+
  • 4K streaming made simple:With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
  • 4K picture quality: With Roku Streaming Stick Plus, watch your favorites with brilliant 4K picture and vivid HDR color.
  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
  • No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.

Choose Hulu when your viewing depends on keeping up with current television rather than only watching completed box sets. It is also a strong addition to Disney+ or Max when a bundle reduces the number of separate subscriptions you would otherwise pay for.

Hulu’s weakness is that its value can change more noticeably with the current lineup. If the shows you want have ended, moved, or left the service, a broad service such as Netflix may provide more dependable year-round browsing. That is why Hulu often works best as a service you rotate in for a season rather than keep automatically forever.

7. Peacock: best targeted value for NBC, Bravo, Universal, and sports

Peacock was a focused rather than universal choice. It made the most sense for viewers who wanted NBC and Bravo programming, Universal movies, Peacock Originals, or selected live sports at a targeted price.

Peacock’s plan structure separated a limited Select tier from Premium and Premium Plus. Premium included television, movies, sports, and Peacock Originals with ads. Premium Plus added downloads and generally removed ads, but the ad-free promise had stated exceptions for some live, sponsored, or linear content.

Peacock’s official price-change notice recorded a July 23, 2025 increase to $10.99 monthly or $109.99 annually for Premium and $16.99 monthly or $169.99 annually for Premium Plus. Those dated figures are more useful for understanding 2025 than for predicting what a new subscriber will pay now.

Peacock is a good rotation service: subscribe when a specific NBCUniversal series, movie slate, or sports schedule justifies it, then stop renewal when your queue is empty. It is less convincing than Netflix as the only subscription for a household with varied tastes.

8. Paramount+: best for CBS, UEFA Champions League, UFC, and Showtime

Paramount+ was the most useful choice when its specific rights matched the household’s interests. The service covered CBS programming, NFL on CBS, UEFA Champions League, UFC live fights, selected Showtime series, Star Trek, and Paramount film franchises, with availability depending on the plan and event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The later signup-page verification listed Essential at $8.99 monthly and Premium at $13.99 monthly. Essential was ad-supported and included CBS live programming, NFL on CBS, UEFA Champions League, UFC live fights, and selected Showtime programming. Premium added fewer ads except on live TV, 4K/HDR on supported titles, downloads, CBS live programming, and all of Showtime.

Paramount+ is therefore easy to recommend to a CBS household, a UEFA Champions League or UFC viewer, or someone specifically seeking Showtime and Paramount franchises. It is not the obvious first subscription for viewers who have no interest in those categories.

The best service by viewing priority

Your priority Best starting point Reason
One service for a household with varied tastes Netflix The broadest general-purpose mix in this comparison, including documentaries and international content.
Documentaries plus broad entertainment Netflix It combines documentaries with films, series, originals, licensed programming, and discovery tools.
HBO-related documentary and prestige programming Max HBO is the central draw, with Warner Bros., DC, and related libraries extending the catalog.
National Geographic and family factual viewing Disney+ National Geographic sits alongside Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars.
Premium originals in a compact service Apple TV Exclusive originals, weekly releases, no advertising, and family sharing.
Current television and FX Hulu It is designed around current-season programming, Hulu Originals, and FX-related viewing.
Amazon Prime benefits already matter Prime Video The video service is included in a wider membership and also offers rentals, purchases, and channels.
NBC, Bravo, Universal, or selected live sports Peacock A focused service that can be subscribed to for a particular lineup or season.
CBS, Champions League, UFC, or Showtime Paramount+ Its value comes from specific network, sports, and franchise rights.

How to spend less: rotate before you bundle

  1. Write down the exact shows, films, documentaries, or events you expect to watch. Separate “I might browse this service” from “I will watch these five titles this month.”
  2. Check where each title is available before subscribing. Rights change, and a service’s search results may include rentals, purchases, or add-on channels.
  3. Choose the lowest tier that actually fits your household. Check resolution, simultaneous streams, downloads, live-TV access, and ad restrictions rather than comparing only the headline monthly price.
  4. Rotate subscriptions. Subscribe for the month or season containing the programming you want, download titles where permitted, and cancel or stop renewal when the queue is exhausted.
  5. Calculate bundles using exact tiers. The Disney+, Hulu, and Max bundle can be valuable, but only if you want all three services and the included plan levels match your needs. A bundle is not automatically cheaper than subscribing selectively.
  6. Check the billing channel. Taxes, annual discounts, promotional prices, partner-billed subscriptions, and plan names can differ. Netflix specifically notes that taxes and partner-package prices may differ, while Max notes that provider-billed subscriptions can have different billing arrangements.

Apple TV also documented an Apple TV and Peacock bundle, but the price and eligibility should be checked at the time of signup. Do not treat a previously advertised bundle, trial, or discount as permanent.

What you need to stream

You do not need special hardware if your television, phone, tablet, computer, or game console already supports the relevant apps. A separate device can still be useful if a television lacks a convenient app platform, has an outdated interface, or needs a portable 4K streaming interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Optional setup accessory: Roku Streaming Stick 4K

Roku states that its Roku Streaming Stick 4K connects to a television through HDMI, supports 4K, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and long-range Wi-Fi, and provides access to Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and thousands of additional services. It is an optional way to consolidate streaming apps, not a replacement for any paid subscription.

The device does not include Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Max, or any other paid membership. 4K and HDR require compatible hardware, content, television settings, and accounts. App availability can also vary by region and device.

A simple decision tree

  1. Need one broad service? Start with Netflix.
  2. Is the household centered on HBO or prestige television? Choose Max.
  3. Are family franchises and National Geographic the priority? Choose Disney+.
  4. Do you mainly want premium originals without ads? Consider Apple TV.
  5. Do Amazon Prime benefits already justify membership? Use Prime Video before adding another broad service.
  6. Are current television and FX the reason you subscribe? Choose Hulu, potentially through a bundle.
  7. Do you follow NBC, Bravo, Universal, or a particular sports schedule? Choose Peacock for the relevant period.
  8. Do CBS, UEFA Champions League, UFC, Showtime, or Paramount franchises decide the purchase? Choose Paramount+ and select the plan that covers the specific programming.

Important price and availability cautions

  • Prices change, and a 2025 article should not silently present later prices as if they were historical prices.
  • Taxes, annual billing, promotional offers, app-store billing, and partner packages can change the amount charged.
  • “Ad-free” does not always mean that every live event, sponsored segment, linear channel, or promotional trailer is free of advertising.
  • Sports rights are especially changeable. Confirm that the league, event, local CBS station, or live channel you need is included in your plan and location.
  • Catalog availability changes by country and over time. A service’s reputation is not a guarantee that a particular documentary is available today.
  • Prime Video’s interface includes rentals, purchases, and add-on channels as well as titles included with Prime.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Netflix the best streaming service for documentaries?

Netflix is the best default for viewers who want documentaries alongside a broad mix of films, scripted shows, international programming, and originals. Max is a stronger fit for HBO-related documentary and prestige programming, while Disney+ is the clearer choice for National Geographic and family factual viewing. Documentary catalogs change, so verify the specific titles you want before subscribing.

Should I subscribe to several services at once?

Only if the bundle or simultaneous viewing justifies the cost. For many households, rotating services by show, documentary, or sports season is cheaper than keeping every subscription active year-round.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a Roku Streaming Stick 4K include streaming subscriptions?

No. It provides access to compatible apps, but Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Max, and other services require separate accounts and payments. 4K and HDR also require compatible content and equipment.

The Bottom Line

Choose Netflix if you want one broadly useful service. Choose Apple TV for a compact premium-originals service, Max for HBO and prestige programming, Disney+ for families and National Geographic, Prime Video when Amazon Prime already makes sense, Hulu for current television and FX, Peacock for NBCUniversal and targeted sports, and Paramount+ for CBS, UEFA Champions League, UFC, Showtime, and Paramount franchises. For the lowest long-term cost, subscribe around the programming you will actually watch and rotate rather than assuming every bundle or annual plan is a bargain.
