What Happened to Zoro.to? The Rebrand to Aniwatch and HiAnime Explained

Zoro.to was rebranded through Aniwatch.to and then HiAnime. Learn what happened to each service, whether HiAnime was the successor, and why current mirrors should not be trusted automatically.

Zoro.to was not simply erased and replaced by one permanent new name. The service went through a sequence of changes: Zoro.to was followed by Aniwatch.to, Aniwatch rebranded as HiAnime in March 2024, and HiAnime later displayed a goodbye message before being reported as defunct after a wider anti-piracy enforcement action in Vietnam.

So the concise answer is: HiAnime was the later successor associated with Zoro.to, but that historical connection does not make every current Zoro-, Aniwatch-, or HiAnime-branded domain authentic or safe.

The Zoro.to-to-HiAnime timeline

The name changes happened in stages rather than as one clearly announced rebrand.

Date What happened What can be stated confidently
Before July 2023 Zoro.to operated as an unofficial anime-streaming portal associated with a Vietnam-based operation. It was identified by government and industry sources as an unauthorized piracy-market service, not a licensed anime distributor.
July 2023 The Zoro.to domain’s nameservers changed to infrastructure associated with the Motion Picture Association and the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment. The domain began redirecting to an anti-piracy portal. ACE said it wanted to close the site completely and prevent it from reopening.
2023 The service appeared under Aniwatch.to. Site staff said Zoro had been acquired by a new development team and that accounts, user data, and watchlists would remain. Those were operator claims, not independently audited ownership or migration records.
March 1, 2024 Aniwatch rebranded as HiAnime. Users visiting the old Aniwatch domain were redirected to the new domain. A community message said accounts and watchlists would remain unchanged.
March 13, 2026 HiAnime’s principal domains displayed a goodbye message. The notice looked like a shutdown announcement, although early reporting did not immediately rule out another rebrand.
July 6, 2026 Reporting described a Vietnamese enforcement operation supported by the United States that dismantled a network of more than 100 pirate sites and charged seven suspects. HiAnime.to appeared in government-broadcast footage, and the operation was described as defunct. That does not prove that every similarly named website was controlled by the same operators.

This sequence is consistent with descriptions in the U.S. Trade Representative’s Notorious Markets materials, which identify the chain as Zoro.to → Aniwatch → HiAnime. It is more accurate to describe the service as repeatedly rebranded and later disrupted or shut down than to say that Zoro.to merely changed its name once.

Was Zoro.to rebranded as HiAnime?

Historically, yes—but indirectly. The commonly reported succession was:

  1. Zoro.to was followed by Aniwatch.to.
  2. Aniwatch.to rebranded as HiAnime on March 1, 2024.
  3. HiAnime later displayed a goodbye notice and was subsequently reported as defunct.

That makes HiAnime the later successor associated with the Zoro.to service. It does not establish that a new website using any of those names is an official continuation. Unofficial streaming operations often change domains, use mirrors, or attract unrelated clones. A familiar logo, page design, account-login screen, or copied database is not reliable proof of common ownership.

Was the site seized, blocked, or voluntarily renamed?

Different parts of the story involve different kinds of disruption.

In July 2023, Zoro.to’s nameserver changes and redirect were associated with action by ACE and the Motion Picture Association. TorrentFreak reported that ACE wanted to shut the service down permanently. The service subsequently appeared as Aniwatch, which is why the episode is often described both as an intervention against Zoro.to and as the beginning of a rebrand.

Aniwatch’s March 2024 change to HiAnime was a more straightforward rebrand. Reporting also placed that change in the context of domain-blocking and anti-piracy pressure, including an Indian dynamic-blocking injunction. However, the operators did not publish a definitive explanation for every name change. Legal pressure is important context, but it should not be presented as a complete, officially confirmed explanation for each decision.

Finally, the March 2026 goodbye notice and the later reporting about arrests and the dismantling of a large Vietnamese piracy network point to a more serious disruption of the HiAnime operation. The evidence supports describing HiAnime as shut down or defunct by the later reporting—not claiming that every similarly branded domain disappeared at exactly the same time.

What happened to accounts, watch history, and watchlists?

During the earlier transitions, site staff made two important assurances:

  • During the Zoro-to-Aniwatch transition, staff said user data, accounts, and watchlists would remain.
  • During the Aniwatch-to-HiAnime transition, a community message said accounts and watchlists would remain unchanged.

Those statements explain why many users understood Aniwatch and HiAnime to be continuations of the same service. They should still be treated as operator assurances, not independently verified guarantees. There was no reliable audit showing that every account, viewing-history record, or watchlist transferred successfully.

  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.

After the 2026 disappearance, there is no reliable evidence that accounts, watch history, or watchlists were preserved on a later lookalike domain. Do not enter an old password into a site claiming to restore your Zoro, Aniwatch, or HiAnime account. If you reused that password elsewhere, change it on the legitimate service and enable multifactor authentication where available.

Is a current Zoro, Aniwatch, or HiAnime domain safe?

Do not assume that it is. The historical relationship between Zoro.to, Aniwatch, and HiAnime is different from proving the authenticity of a current domain.

The U.S. Trade Representative’s 2025 Notorious Markets materials identify HiAnime and related domains as part of a piracy-market network. That designation does not certify any currently reachable domain as official, secure, or operated by the original team. A domain can be an unrelated clone, a phishing site, an advertising trap, or a temporary mirror.

Practical warning signs include:

  • Requests for an existing streaming-service password, payment-card details, or identity documents.
  • Pop-ups that claim your device is infected or that require a browser extension, “player,” or codec.
  • Downloads offered as a condition of watching a video.
  • Urgent messages claiming that an account or watchlist must be “verified” immediately.
  • Domains that imitate the old name but have no verifiable announcement from an authoritative source.

This article does not provide mirror addresses, credential-transfer instructions, or methods for bypassing domain blocks. Those steps could expose readers to security risks and would facilitate access to unauthorized streams.

Legal and copyright context

The services discussed here were identified by government and rightsholder sources as unauthorized piracy markets. In the United States, the Protecting Lawful Streaming Act increased criminal penalties for willful commercial or private-financial-gain illegal streaming. Separately, the U.S. Copyright Office explains that copyright owners can seek removal of infringing online material through the Digital Millennium Copyright Act process.

The legal consequences of accessing or redistributing unauthorized streams vary by country and by conduct. The risk is particularly different for operators, uploaders, commercial services, and people who download or redistribute content. Readers should consult current guidance in their own jurisdiction rather than treating a general internet explanation as legal advice.

Legal alternatives for anime viewers

If the goal is simply to keep watching anime after Zoro.to or HiAnime, licensed services are the safer route. Catalogs, subtitles, dubs, prices, and release schedules vary by country and change over time, so check the current catalog in your territory.

  • Crunchyroll: A primary legal anime-streaming option, with access continuing after the Funimation website and app ended service on April 2, 2024. It is the closest general replacement category for viewers looking for a large anime-focused catalog, although no licensed service carries every title.
  • HIDIVE: Its official service describes offerings including simulcasts, dubs, classic titles, and downloads. Availability is regional, so confirm that the specific series you want is offered where you live.
  • Netflix: Netflix maintains an official anime catalog and can be convenient for viewers who already subscribe. Its selection is not identical to Zoro.to or HiAnime, and both catalog and availability differ by country.

For a particular show, the most dependable approach is to search the title through an official distributor or a legitimate availability guide, then verify the result directly in the licensed service’s app or website. Avoid assuming that a search result using the old Zoro, Aniwatch, or HiAnime branding is an authorized source.

Bottom line

Zoro.to was effectively replaced through a chain of rebrands: Zoro.to became associated with Aniwatch.to, Aniwatch became HiAnime, and the later HiAnime operation was eventually reported as shut down or defunct. Earlier staff claimed that accounts and watchlists would carry over, but those claims were not an independently audited guarantee. Most importantly, the historical chain does not authenticate any current mirror or similarly named domain. Treat such sites as unverified and use licensed anime services instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is HiAnime the same as Zoro.to?

HiAnime was reported as the later successor in the sequence Zoro.to → Aniwatch.to → HiAnime. That historical relationship does not prove that every current HiAnime-branded domain is operated by the same people or is safe to use.

When did Aniwatch become HiAnime?

Aniwatch rebranded as HiAnime on March 1, 2024. Users visiting the old Aniwatch domain were redirected to the new domain, and a community message said accounts and watchlists would remain unchanged.

Did Zoro.to permanently shut down?

The original Zoro.to domain was disrupted or redirected in July 2023, after which the service appeared under Aniwatch. The later HiAnime operation was displayed as saying goodbye in March 2026 and was subsequently reported as defunct after a broader enforcement action.

Are Zoro.to, Aniwatch, or HiAnime mirrors safe?

No current mirror should be assumed safe or official solely because it uses a familiar name. Unofficial services can have clones, phishing pages, aggressive advertising, malicious downloads, or credential-harvesting forms.

Were Zoro.to watchlists transferred to HiAnime?

Site staff claimed during the earlier transitions that accounts and watchlists would remain. That was an operator assurance rather than an independently verified guarantee, and there is no reliable evidence that data was preserved on later lookalike domains.
