The 2024 holiday movie season offered far more than Christmas romances. The calendar divided into four overlapping lanes: major theatrical event films, family and faith-oriented releases, streaming-first Christmas movies and specials, and the large cable-and-streaming television-movie ecosystem. For a traditional family choice, start with The Best Christmas Pageant Ever; for a Christmas action spectacle, try Red One; for streaming romance and comedy, Netflix supplied Meet Me Next Christmas, Hot Frosty, The Merry Gentlemen, and Our Little Secret; and for a darker counterprogramming choice, Nosferatu arrived on Christmas Day.
This is a U.S.-focused preview of the 2024 release calendar. The dates below distinguish theatrical openings from streaming premieres, and a film’s inclusion in the holiday-season calendar does not necessarily mean that its story is about Christmas.
What counted as a holiday movie in 2024?
The season is easiest to understand by separating Christmas movies from holiday-season movies. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, Red One, Netflix’s Christmas slate, and Hallmark’s seasonal programming are directly tied to Christmas. By contrast, Wicked, Gladiator II, Moana 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Nosferatu were major films released during the holiday corridor but are not conventional Christmas stories.
That distinction matters when choosing a film for a particular audience. A family seeking a church-pageant story will want something different from a group looking for a large-scale fantasy musical, while someone deliberately avoiding sentimental seasonal entertainment may prefer an action thriller or gothic horror film.

Theatrical highlights
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever — November 8
Directed by Dallas Jenkins and starring Judy Greer and Pete Holmes, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever adapts Barbara Robinson’s 1972 children’s novel. The story follows six unruly siblings who become involved in a church Christmas pageant. It was the clearest traditional family-Christmas theatrical option of the season, particularly for viewers looking for a faith-oriented and intergenerational film.
The source material offers a natural companion for readers who want to compare the adaptation with Robinson’s original story. the book behind The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is not required to understand the film, but it is a useful choice for families, book groups, or younger viewers who want to read before or after watching.
Blitz — November 1 limited release; Apple TV+ on November 22
Steve McQueen’s Blitz is set in London during World War II rather than during Christmas itself. Its wartime setting and family-centered story nevertheless made it relevant to serious holiday-season viewing. The film had a limited theatrical release on November 1, 2024, before arriving on Apple TV+ on November 22.
This is a better fit for viewers who want a prestige drama or historically grounded seasonal film than for someone specifically searching for a Christmas comedy.
Red One — November 15
Red One was the season’s most overt Christmas blockbuster. Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans lead an action comedy in which an E.L.F. operative attempts to rescue a kidnapped Santa Claus. The premise places Santa at the center of a large-scale rescue mission rather than a quiet family story, making it the obvious theatrical recommendation for viewers who wanted Christmas mythology with action-movie energy.

Wicked and Gladiator II — November 22
The November 22 corridor brought two major, very different event films. Wicked is the first part of a two-part musical adaptation centered on Elphaba and Glinda. Its fantasy world, songs, and scale made it a natural holiday-season group outing even though it is not a Christmas narrative.
Gladiator II, Ridley Scott’s sequel to the 2000 historical action film, served a completely different audience. It belongs on this list because it was one of the season’s major theatrical attractions, not because its story is seasonal. Viewers choosing between these releases were selecting a holiday-season event movie rather than a Christmas film.
Moana 2 — November 27
Moana 2 returned Auliʻi Cravalho as Moana and Dwayne Johnson as Maui. The pair travel through Oceania with a new crew while confronting maritime threats. It was one of the strongest family-oriented theatrical choices in the Thanksgiving corridor and the clearest animated franchise event before the December releases.
Flow — November 22 limited release; December 6 wider release
Flow is an unconventional alternative to studio franchise entertainment. The dialogue-free animated film follows a cat and other animals trying to survive a flood. Its visual storytelling and unusual premise make it a strong recommendation for animation fans and families seeking something quieter or less formulaic than a traditional Christmas movie.
December franchise releases and darker alternatives
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim was scheduled for December 13, adding fantasy-franchise appeal to the holiday corridor. On December 20, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Mufasa: The Lion King gave families two more major theatrical choices. Mufasa is family-oriented and seasonal in its release positioning, but it should not be mislabeled as a Christmas story.

Opening on December 25, Robert Eggers’s Nosferatu offered the season’s deliberate dark alternative. This gothic-horror reimagining was aimed at viewers who wanted atmospheric dread and classic horror rather than holiday comfort viewing. Its Christmas Day placement made it especially notable as counterprogramming.
Netflix’s 2024 holiday lineup
Netflix spread its seasonal programming across romance, comedy, animation, music, food competition, family drama, and action. Unlike a theatrical calendar concentrated around Thanksgiving and Christmas, the Netflix slate supplied a steady sequence of premieres throughout November and December.
November streaming premieres
- Meet Me Next Christmas — November 6: A woman races through New York to obtain a ticket to a sold-out Pentatonix Christmas Eve concert.
- Hot Frosty — November 13: A widow magically brings a snowman to life, providing the season’s most obviously fantastical romance premise.
- The Merry Gentlemen — November 20: A former big-city dancer stages an all-male Christmas revue to save her parents’ performing venue.
- Spellbound — November 22: An animated fantasy adventure about Ellian, a young royal trying to save her kingdom after a spell transforms her parents into monsters. The film features music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Glenn Slater.
- Our Little Secret — November 27: Resentful exes are forced under the same roof after discovering that their current partners are siblings.
- Is It Cake? Holiday — November 28: A four-episode holiday edition of the baking competition series.
- The Snow Sister — November 29: A Christmas-season family drama about an 11-year-old whose family is coping with grief.
For viewers specifically seeking a streaming romance or comedy cluster, Meet Me Next Christmas, Hot Frosty, The Merry Gentlemen, and Our Little Secret formed the most direct group. They differ in premise, but all offer the accessible, contemporary seasonal tone associated with the streaming Christmas-movie cycle.
December streaming premieres and specials
- That Christmas — December 4: An animated film based on a trilogy of children’s books by Richard Curtis. It intertwines stories about family, friendship, loneliness, Santa Claus, and an exceptionally chaotic Christmas. It marked Curtis’s first animated feature as writer and executive producer, as well as Simon Otto’s feature directorial debut.
- A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter — December 6: A music and variety special for viewers who want performances and celebrity entertainment rather than a conventional narrative film.
- The Great British Baking Show: Holidays — December 9: A seasonal baking destination that works well as low-stakes group viewing or background entertainment.
- Carry-On — December 13: A Christmas Eve airport thriller in which a TSA agent is blackmailed into allowing a dangerous package onto a flight. It expanded Netflix’s holiday offering into action and suspense.
That Christmas was Netflix’s most explicitly Christmas-centered animated alternative to Moana 2 or other theatrical franchise fare. Carry-On, meanwhile, was the best fit for viewers who wanted the pressure of a holiday travel thriller without the conventions of a Christmas romance.
Hallmark and the television-movie ecosystem
Hallmark’s 2024 offering was not a short list of theatrical-style releases. Its official Countdown to Christmas 2024 Movie Guide organized a large premiere slate and linked to details for each new premiere. The broader Hallmark ecosystem included Hallmark Channel, Hallmark Mystery, Hallmark Family, and Hallmark+ as distinct destinations.

That structure is important for viewers who use “Hallmark movies” as shorthand for several different kinds of programming. A channel premiere, a Hallmark+ title, a seasonal library film, and a repeat broadcast are not interchangeable availability claims.
For a writer-facing or scheduling-level overview, the Hallmark guide works best alongside a dated television and streaming schedule such as Rotten Tomatoes’ 2024 holiday programming guide. That broader type of guide combines new cable and streaming movies with Christmas specials, holiday episodes, marathons, and platform-specific seasonal hubs. It identified holiday destinations involving Disney+, Hallmark+, Hulu, and AMC+ as well as the traditional cable ecosystem.
There is no single responsible exhaustive count of all 2024 holiday television movies unless the scope is limited to one network or one defined schedule. Different guides may include premieres, repeats, specials, and existing platform libraries under the same seasonal heading. The difference is one of category and scope, not necessarily a contradiction.

Holiday viewing beyond the films
Netflix’s own 2024 holiday guide also promoted adjacent gift and hosting categories, including a Netflix Collectibles Advent Calendar, a Bridgerton cookbook, a Bridgerton/Williams Sonoma hosting collection, and a Polly Pocket x Stranger Things compact playset. These items are best treated as optional seasonal merchandise or entertaining ideas, not as movie recommendations and not as products required to watch any title.
For a hosted movie night, the practical takeaway is to choose the viewing mood first: a family film such as Moana 2 or The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, a baking special such as The Great British Baking Show: Holidays, or a darker group screening of Nosferatu. The cookbook and hosting products were adjacent to the viewing season, not tie-in requirements.
Availability and release-date cautions
- Dates are historical: The 2024 theatrical dates and Netflix premiere dates do not establish what is available today.
- Country matters: Netflix, Apple TV+, Disney+, Hulu, Hallmark+, AMC+, and other services can have different catalogs by territory.
- A premiere is not the same as a permanent library listing: A title may leave a service, move to another service, or become available for rental or purchase.
- Do not assume physical media: Netflix titles should not be described as having DVD or Blu-ray editions without checking the exact title, format, region, release date, and inventory.
- Use dated TV schedules carefully: Holiday guides may combine new movies, repeats, specials, episodes, marathons, and platform libraries.
For readers revisiting the 2024 season, the safest way to find a title is to search the current listing for the relevant service or consult a current availability guide. The schedule in this preview tells you when the films entered the 2024 conversation; it does not promise continued access.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWas there one complete list of every 2024 Hallmark holiday movie?
Hallmark’s official Countdown to Christmas 2024 Movie Guide covered its new premiere program, while broader television schedules also included Hallmark Mystery, Hallmark Family, Hallmark+, repeats, specials, and other seasonal programming. A complete count requires a defined network, service, and category scope.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The best traditional family pick was The Best Christmas Pageant Ever; Red One supplied Christmas action; Moana 2 led the animated theatrical choices; That Christmas was Netflix’s most explicitly seasonal animated option; Carry-On provided holiday suspense; and Nosferatu was the clearest dark alternative. For a steady supply of television romances and seasonal premieres, Hallmark’s Countdown to Christmas ecosystem remained the destination, but every current watch-location claim requires a country- and date-specific check.
