The Fantastic Four are Marvel’s First Family: a team whose stories combine superhero action with family conflict, scientific ambition, cosmic exploration, public celebrity, and imaginative world-building. Reed Richards, Sue Storm Richards, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm gained extraordinary abilities after an unauthorized experimental spaceflight exposed them to cosmic rays. But their lasting importance comes from more than their powers. Their comic introduced or expanded some of Marvel’s most influential ideas, including Doctor Doom, Galactus, the Silver Surfer, Black Panther, Wakanda, and the Inhumans.

This guide explains where the Fantastic Four came from, how each member fits into the family, which villains and stories matter most, where new readers should begin, and what The Fantastic Four: First Steps adds to the franchise.

What are the Fantastic Four?

The Fantastic Four are a superhero family created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby. Their first comic, Fantastic Four #1, was published in 1961 and is widely treated as one of the major starting points of the modern Marvel Age.

Unlike many earlier superhero teams, the original Fantastic Four were written as recognizable people with strong personalities, disagreements, romantic relationships, insecurities, and domestic problems. They were explorers and scientists as much as costumed crime-fighters. A story might move from an argument in the family’s headquarters to an expedition through another dimension or a confrontation with a cosmic entity capable of threatening an entire planet.

That mixture explains the team’s nickname. “First Family” refers not only to the group’s place in Marvel history but also to the way the franchise is organized around family relationships. The core quartet remains Reed, Sue, Johnny, and Ben, while Franklin and Valeria Richards, Reed and Sue’s children, broaden the mythology into a multigenerational family.

The 1961 origin: an experiment that changed Marvel

The original origin follows Reed Richards, Ben Grimm, Susan Storm, and Johnny Storm on an unauthorized experimental spaceflight. Their spacecraft is exposed to cosmic rays, and the four passengers return transformed.

  • Reed Richards can stretch, deform, and reshape his body. He becomes Mister Fantastic.
  • Susan Storm can make herself invisible and create invisible force constructs. She initially uses the name Invisible Girl and later adopts the more mature identity Invisible Woman.
  • Johnny Storm can ignite his body, fly, project flame, and manipulate fire. He becomes the Human Torch.
  • Ben Grimm gains tremendous strength and durability but is permanently transformed into a rocky, orange-skinned figure known as the Thing.

The accident creates the team’s central tension. Reed sees the transformation as a scientific problem to understand and perhaps solve. Ben experiences it as a devastating loss of his former appearance and ordinary life. Sue and Johnny must adapt to abilities that affect both their public identities and their private relationships.

The first issue also establishes the team’s exploratory tone. Their debut adventure takes them underground to confront Mole Man, signaling that the Fantastic Four’s world would include strange environments, hidden civilizations, scientific mysteries, and threats beyond conventional supervillainy.

The four central members

Character Role and abilities Central conflict
Reed Richards / Mister Fantastic Scientific leader, inventor, strategist, and elastic-bodied explorer. His certainty in his own intelligence can make him distant, overconfident, or inattentive to the emotional needs of his family.
Sue Storm Richards / Invisible Woman Invisibility and powerful invisible force constructs, barriers, and related force-based abilities. She must balance her role as the family’s emotional center with her authority as a leader in her own right.
Johnny Storm / Human Torch Flight, ignition, flame projection, and fire manipulation. His impulsiveness and love of attention often clash with the responsibility of being part of a high-profile family.
Ben Grimm / The Thing Superhuman strength, durability, toughness, and a grounded sense of humor. He struggles with grief and self-image after losing his human body, even while becoming the team’s emotional and physical anchor.

Reed Richards: the mind of the family

Reed is commonly the team’s scientific leader. His intellect drives the group’s laboratories, vehicles, inventions, interdimensional investigations, and responses to threats that cannot be solved by force alone. He is often portrayed as one of Earth-616’s foremost scientists.

His weakness is closely connected to his strength. Reed tends to approach personal crises as if they were engineering problems. His confidence can become intellectual arrogance, especially in his rivalry with Victor von Doom. The best Fantastic Four stories do not present Reed as a flawless genius; they ask whether someone capable of understanding the universe can still fail to understand the people closest to him.

Sue Storm Richards: more than invisibility

Sue’s early name, Invisible Girl, can make her sound like a supporting character or stealth specialist. That description is incomplete. Her ability to create and manipulate invisible force constructs gives her both defensive and offensive power. She can protect the team, restrain opponents, and shape the battlefield in ways that are not immediately visible.

Her development from Invisible Girl to Invisible Woman also reflects the franchise’s changing understanding of her role. Sue is frequently portrayed as the family’s emotional center, but she is not merely the person who keeps everyone calm. She increasingly shares leadership and decision-making authority with Reed and can be one of the team’s most formidable members.

Johnny Storm: the public face and volatile younger brother

Johnny is usually the most impulsive, flamboyant, and publicly recognizable member of the quartet. His ability to turn himself into living fire allows him to fly and project or manipulate flame, while his personality supplies energy and humor.

His name also carries historical weight. Johnny’s Human Torch identity echoes an earlier Marvel character, connecting the modern Fantastic Four to the company’s older superhero tradition. Within the family, Johnny often plays the role of the reckless younger brother whose confidence hides genuine courage and a willingness to act when others are still debating.

Ben Grimm: the heart beneath the rock

Ben’s transformation is the most visibly tragic consequence of the cosmic-ray accident. He gains immense strength and durability, but his rocky body becomes a lasting reminder that the experiment changed his life more profoundly than it changed the others’.

The Thing’s stories balance toughness and humor with grief over lost normalcy. Ben is often the most grounded member of the team: less interested in abstract theories or public image and more concerned with whether his friends are safe. His long-term relationship with Alicia Masters adds another dimension to his struggle with identity, appearance, and the possibility of being loved without being treated as a problem to fix.

How the Fantastic Four expanded beyond a quartet

The Fantastic Four’s mythology does not remain limited to the original four adults. Franklin and Valeria Richards turn the team into a multigenerational family. Their presence changes the stakes of Reed and Sue’s decisions: scientific experiments, cosmic missions, and battles are no longer only matters of professional risk.

The Future Foundation expands that idea further. It is an educational and scientific organization built around gifted children and young thinkers, including the Richards family. Its mission is broader than defeating villains. The Future Foundation asks how intelligence, cooperation, and imagination might be used to solve humanity’s hardest problems. It is one of the clearest bridges between the Fantastic Four’s superhero identity and their science-fiction identity.

The villains and allies who define the mythology

Doctor Doom: Reed Richards’s greatest rival

Victor von Doom is the Fantastic Four’s defining antagonist and Reed Richards’s most important personal and intellectual rival. Doom is the ruler of Latveria, a political power as well as a supervillain, and combines advanced technology with mastery of magic.

That combination makes Doom more than an evil inventor. He contests Reed’s scientific authority, moral judgment, role as a husband and father, and belief that knowledge should be used through cooperation rather than authoritarian control. Their rivalry works because each man believes he understands how the world should be governed, and each sees the other as proof of what happens when intelligence is separated from wisdom.

Fantastic Four #5 is an important early Doom story and a useful starting point for understanding the Reed–Doom relationship. It shows why Doom became a recurring force rather than a disposable first-appearance villain.

Galactus and the Silver Surfer: when family adventure becomes cosmic myth

The Galactus storyline is one of the franchise’s signature cosmic narratives. The Galactus Trilogy, Fantastic Four #48–50, takes the team from personal and local concerns to a threat on an existential scale.

Galactus demonstrates the Fantastic Four’s unusual storytelling range. The team is not simply fighting a villain who wants money, revenge, or political power. They are confronting a cosmic being whose existence raises questions about survival, morality, scale, and whether humanity can negotiate with something it cannot overpower. The Silver Surfer adds another layer of conscience and tragedy to that mythology.

Black Panther and Wakanda

Black Panther and Wakanda first appeared in Fantastic Four #52. Their introduction expanded the Marvel setting through T’Challa’s identity as a monarch, strategist, scientist, and formidable hero.

The relationship between the Fantastic Four and Wakanda developed into a recurring alliance involving scientific exchange, diplomacy, and shared battles, including conflicts connected to Doctor Doom. This is another example of the title’s importance to Marvel continuity: the Fantastic Four did not merely receive guest characters; their book helped establish major parts of the wider Marvel universe.

Other dimensions, civilizations, and scientific frontiers

Doctor Doom, Galactus, the Silver Surfer, Black Panther, and Wakanda are the most recognizable examples, but the larger pattern matters more than any single character. Fantastic Four stories regularly use alternate dimensions, cosmic entities, hidden societies, unusual technologies, and speculative science to make the Marvel universe feel larger.

That world-building is why the title can function as a gateway to Marvel continuity. A reader can begin with a family story and naturally encounter cosmic adventure, political fantasy, interdimensional science fiction, and cross-title history.

Essential Fantastic Four comics and a practical reading order

You do not need to read every issue from 1961 onward to understand the Fantastic Four. A focused route can show the team’s origin, its central rivalry, its cosmic scale, and its importance to Marvel history.

  1. Fantastic Four (1961) #1: Read the original origin and the first battle with Mole Man. It establishes the personalities, powers, and exploratory structure of the series.
  2. Fantastic Four (1961) #5: An early Doctor Doom story and a foundation for the Reed–Doom rivalry.
  3. Fantastic Four (1961) #48–50: The Galactus Trilogy, the defining early cosmic storyline.
  4. Fantastic Four (1961) #52: The first appearance of Black Panther and Wakanda.
  5. Fantastic Four: Life Story (2021): A condensed, alternate-format retelling that follows the team across changing decades. It is a good choice for readers who want the broad history without working through the entire original run.
  6. Fantastic Four: Full Circle: An original graphic novel by Alex Ross and a visually distinctive standalone route into the team.
  7. Fantastic Four: Solve Everything: A Jonathan Hickman-era entry point built around a sweeping story that crosses time, space, and reality.

For a new reader, the most efficient sequence is #1, #5, #48–50, and #52, followed by one modern or self-contained work. Fantastic Four: Life Story, Fantastic Four: Full Circle, and Fantastic Four: Solve Everything offer different experiences: historical compression, graphic-novel spectacle, and large-scale modern science fiction.

Marvel’s catalog also includes a Fantastic Four (2025) series and related 2025–2026 releases such as Fantastic Four: First Foes, Doomquest, Planet of the Apes Vs. Fantastic Four, and Fantastic Four Facsimile Edition. Issue numbering, print status, digital availability, and retailer stock can change, so verify the exact format before buying.

What The Fantastic Four: First Steps adds

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is a Marvel Studios film set in a 1960s-inspired retro-futuristic world. It follows Reed, Sue, Johnny, and Ben as they face a major threat while placing the bonds between the four characters at the center of the story.

The film was directed by Matt Shakman and produced by Kevin Feige. Its principal cast includes Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm. Marvel listed the theatrical release date as July 25, 2025.

The film should be understood as its own screen continuity rather than treated as a straightforward adaptation of the main Earth-616 comics. Its retro-futurist setting is a deliberate way to capture the optimism, design language, and science-fiction spirit associated with the Fantastic Four while giving the film room to establish its own version of the family.

It is also important not to describe First Steps as the first screen adaptation of the Fantastic Four without qualification. The franchise had earlier film adaptations. The significance of this film is its Marvel Studios presentation and its place in the modern Marvel screen landscape, not the absence of previous attempts.

How to watch, own, or collect First Steps

Marvel announced digital availability beginning September 23, 2025, followed by 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on October 14, 2025. The 4K and Blu-ray editions include bonus material such as deleted scenes, a gag reel, behind-the-scenes featurettes, and commentary. Marvel also documented an Amazon-exclusive SteelBook bundle with collector cards and a special Fantastic Four: First Steps #1 comic.

If you are comparing formats, the physical release is the clearest choice for someone who wants a permanent collection copy or bonus features. The most useful search phrase is Fantastic Four: First Steps 4K Blu-ray; the SteelBook is a separate collector-oriented edition, and retailer stock or packaging can change. Marvel’s film listing has also stated that the movie is available to own digitally and on Blu-ray and to stream on Disney+. Streaming catalogs, digital storefronts, subtitles, bonus content, and regional availability should be checked for the country where you live before purchase.

For readers who want to watch The Fantastic Four: First Steps, confirm whether the preferred option is a subscription stream, a digital purchase, or a physical disc. Those are different forms of access, and a film’s presence in one country or storefront does not guarantee identical availability elsewhere.

Fantastic Four gifts and collectibles

The franchise offers more than movie merchandise. Because its mythology includes Galactus, H.E.R.B.I.E., the Richards children, and distinctive science-fiction technology, it supports both family-friendly building sets and specialist comic collecting.

LEGO Marvel Fantastic Four vs. Galactus

LEGO describes the LEGO Fantastic Four 76316 set as its first LEGO Fantastic Four building set. It includes the four principal heroes and Galactus. The official U.S. listing gave a price of $59.99 at the time covered by the research, but price and stock are retailer-dependent and should not be treated as current without checking the listing.

LEGO H.E.R.B.I.E.

LEGO’s U.S. page also identified LEGO Fantastic Four H.E.R.B.I.E. 76339 as an official set and listed it for pre-order with an August 1, 2026 shipping date at the time of research. That date and the product’s availability are especially time-sensitive, so verify them before making a purchase or publishing a buying recommendation.

Comic-inspired action figures

Hasbro has documented Marvel Legends Fantastic Four figures based on the comics, including Franklin Richards and Valeria Richards figures with 15 accessories, as well as a separate retro Mr. Fantastic six-inch figure with five accessories. These should be distinguished from movie-specific First Steps figures. Stock, packaging, and release status may vary by retailer.

Comics, films, and alternate universes: keep the continuities separate

The Fantastic Four exist in multiple forms: the original and later Earth-616 comics, alternate comic formats such as Life Story, and screen adaptations with their own visual styles and continuity choices. A character’s design, family status, origin details, or roster in one version does not automatically apply to another.

The same caution applies to the team name itself. “Fantastic Four” may refer to the original quartet in a historical discussion, but later stories include Franklin, Valeria, the Future Foundation, changing rosters, and alternate universes. When discussing a particular story, identify the version, era, or medium rather than assuming that every appearance uses the same lineup.

Why the Fantastic Four still matter

The Fantastic Four remain important because they make Marvel’s biggest ideas personal. Reed’s scientific ambition can endanger his family. Sue’s invisible force can become a symbol of authority that was overlooked. Johnny’s spectacle masks responsibility and vulnerability. Ben’s physical power exists alongside grief and the desire to be seen as a whole person.

At the same time, the team gives Marvel a platform for invention. Doctor Doom turns a family rivalry into a conflict over science, magic, politics, and ethics. Galactus and the Silver Surfer turn a superhero comic into cosmic mythology. Black Panther and Wakanda connect the team to diplomacy and technological exchange. The Future Foundation imagines heroism as education and problem-solving.

That combination of intimacy and scale is the essential Fantastic Four formula: a family argues, experiments, explores, and tries to protect one another while the universe keeps presenting bigger questions.

Are the comics and First Steps set in the same continuity?

They should not be treated as identical continuities. The main comics continuity is Earth-616, while the film establishes its own retro-futuristic screen world and adaptation choices.

Where can I watch The Fantastic Four: First Steps?

Marvel’s latest supplied availability information lists digital ownership, Blu-ray, and Disney+ streaming, but streaming and retail availability can vary by country and change over time. Check the relevant local storefront or Disney+ catalog before purchasing or subscribing.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Fantastic Four are best understood as Marvel’s First Family, not simply as four people with powers. Their origin supplies the emotional foundation; Reed, Sue, Johnny, and Ben provide four contrasting responses to extraordinary change; and the surrounding mythology connects family drama to Doctor Doom, cosmic entities, Wakanda, the Future Foundation, and the wider Marvel universe. Begin with the landmark 1961 issues, choose a modern standalone book if you want a faster route, and treat The Fantastic Four: First Steps as a distinct retro-futuristic screen interpretation.
