Best for: independent music, Creative Commons discovery, podcasts, videos, remixes, personal listening, and creators who want to investigate usage rights before downloading.
Free Music Archive, commonly called FMA, is an online library for listening to, streaming, and downloading audio and video. Its song and album pages identify the applicable license. Downloadable files may be offered under Creative Commons, U.S. public-domain, or customized licenses.
FMA is the strongest general recommendation because the search interface is designed for rights-conscious discovery. Depending on the search, you can filter for public-domain material, commercial use, and use in remixes or videos. That does not eliminate the need to read the track page, but it makes the initial search more useful than simply searching for “free MP3.”
How to use FMA safely
- Search for the style, artist, or type of music you need.
- Use the available rights-related filters when your project has a specific requirement, such as commercial use or video use.
- Open the individual track or album page before downloading.
- Record the artist, title, source page, license name, and any required attribution text.
- Keep that information with your project files in case you need to prove what permission applied when you downloaded the recording.

Pixabay Music advertises a library of more than 24,000 license-free or royalty-free audio tracks and instrumentals. Its search tools include categories such as genre, mood, duration, and theme, which makes it accessible when you need a suitable background track rather than a particular commercial song.
Pixabay is often the quickest option for a creator assembling a video, presentation, social post, or podcast. It is better understood as a source of creator-oriented background music than as a place to find mainstream commercial releases.

Before using a Pixabay track
Open the specific track page and review the permissions alongside Pixabay’s License Summary and applicable terms. Pay particular attention when the project is commercial, involves redistribution, uses the music with a trademark or brand, or places the audio in a sensitive public-facing context.
Limitation: Do not expand “royalty-free” into “anything goes.” The exact license and terms determine what you may do. Save the track page and license information when you download the file.
3. Musopen — best for classical music and music education
Best for: classical listening, music education, sheet music, textbooks, public-domain-oriented research, and offline listening.
Musopen is a nonprofit organization focused on increasing access to music education. It provides recordings, sheet music, and textbooks, and offers downloadable royalty-free music recordings. Its collection is particularly useful when you want classical material rather than contemporary independent music.
Musopen deserves careful wording. It is a strong source for public-domain-oriented classical resources, but you should not assume that every recording is automatically unrestricted worldwide. Musopen’s own FAQ warns that there is no official universal list of public-domain music and that the fact a recording is freely available online does not, by itself, prove that the recording is public domain.
Why a classical recording still needs rights checking
A musical composition and a sound recording can have different rights histories. A composer’s old composition may be public domain while a newer performance or recording remains protected. The answer can also differ by country. If you plan to publish, monetize, advertise, or publicly perform the recording, independently assess the rights status of that specific work and recording, especially outside the United States.
Best use: personal listening, education, and projects for which you have verified that the particular recording and intended use are cleared.

4. Jamendo Music — best for independent discovery with a separate commercial licensing route
Best for: discovering independent artists, free personal listening, and finding a path to documented commercial music licensing when a project needs it.
Jamendo Music’s artist-support information says that tracks on Jamendo Music are, by default, available for free downloads under Creative Commons licenses, although artists can disable downloads. This makes Jamendo a useful destination for independent music discovery, but the Creative Commons terms still matter.
Jamendo also has a separate commercial licensing division for uses such as films, videos, advertising, online projects, and other commercial applications. That distinction is important: the free-download catalog and the commercial-licensing catalog are not interchangeable.
Which Jamendo path should you use?
- Personal listening: Start with Jamendo Music and inspect the Creative Commons license for the track.
- Monetized video, advertising, business content, or client work: Investigate a commercial music license through Jamendo’s licensing route instead of assuming that a free download covers the project.
- Public performance or online broadcasting: Confirm that the selected license covers that specific use and territory.

5. Internet Archive audio collections — best for archival depth

The Internet Archive audio collections contain a wide range of historical and community-uploaded material. The archive’s audio documentation identifies MP3 as a common lossy format and says that derived MP3 files are typically produced at approximately 150–200 kbps. Depending on the item, you may also find other formats or original files.

Check these details on every Internet Archive item
- The item’s description and rights statement.
- Any uploader or collection-specific permission information.
- The identity and authority of the uploader where relevant.
- The available download formats and whether an MP3 is a derived file.
- Whether the stated permission actually covers your planned use and country.

What not to use
Do not treat torrent indexes, leaked-album sites, “YouTube-to-MP3” ripping services, or pages offering current commercial songs without visible authorization as legal music sources. The fact that a tool can extract an audio file does not establish permission from the copyright owner.
