The 18-person cast trained and competed in Morocco, where desert terrain, tunnels, water escapes, urban crossings and extraction exercises replaced the Wales setting used in Season 3. The season also introduced a family-focused twist: three connected pairs entered the course together but competed as individuals.

FOX describes the program as a TV-14 competition series in which celebrities undertake demanding training led by former Special Forces operatives. The show is built around survival, endurance and the ability to continue under pressure rather than around audience voting.

Who was in the Season 4 cast?
The fourth season brought together 18 recruits from television, sports, music, acting, modeling and social media. The full cast was:
| Recruit | Known for |
|---|---|
| Kody Brown | Television personality |
| Brittany Cartwright | Television personality |
| Randall Cobb | Former NFL player |
| Eric Decker | Former NFL player |
| Jessie James Decker | Country-music artist |
| Andrew East | Former NFL player |
| Shawn Johnson East | Olympic gymnastics gold medalist |
| Mark Estes | Internet personality |
| Gia Giudice | Television personality |
| Teresa Giudice | Television personality |
| Chanel Iman | Supermodel |
| Brianna LaPaglia | Internet personality |
| Ravi V. Patel | Actor |
| Christie Pearce Rampone | World Cup and Olympic soccer champion |
| Johnny Manziel | Heisman Trophy winner and former NFL quarterback |
| Eva Marcille | Actress and model |
| Jussie Smollett | Actor and singer |
| Nick Young | NBA champion |
Jussie Smollett’s casting was one of the season’s most prominent news angles, particularly because it marked a return to FOX for the actor and singer. More broadly, the cast continued the series’ formula of placing high-profile people with very different athletic, professional and entertainment backgrounds into the same selection-style environment.
Which couples and family members competed?
Season 4’s most distinctive casting feature was that several recruits arrived with close family connections. They trained in the same overall environment but were assessed as separate recruits rather than as teams:
- Eric Decker and Jessie James Decker were the married couple from the professional-football and country-music worlds.
- Andrew East and Shawn Johnson East were the second married couple. East played professional football, while Johnson East is an Olympic gymnastics gold medalist.
- Teresa Giudice and Gia Giudice competed as a mother-and-daughter pairing.
The relationships added an emotional dimension without changing the fundamental rules: helping or encouraging a relative did not turn the course into a paired competition, and each recruit still had to survive the demands individually.
Where was Season 4 filmed?
Season 4 was filmed in Morocco. The location gave the season a different visual and physical identity from Season 3, which used Wales. FOX emphasized Morocco’s desert terrain and urban environments, allowing the directing staff to stage challenges involving heat, elevation, confined spaces, water and simulated combat or extraction operations.
The setting was not simply a backdrop. Several tasks depended on the Moroccan landscape: recruits crossed exposed heights, moved through abandoned structures, carried heavy equipment in extreme heat and navigated terrain designed to test both physical stamina and decision-making.

What challenges did the recruits face?
Season 4 used television simulations inspired by selection-style military training. The participants were not undergoing actual military selection, and completing the program did not make anyone a Special Forces operator. Instead, the directing staff used controlled exercises to test fear management, teamwork, endurance, obedience under stress and the willingness to continue when conditions became uncomfortable or frightening.
Desert, village and extraction exercises
Some recruits searched for supplies in an abandoned village before racing to an extraction point. Another operation involved an 800-pound supply load in extreme heat, combining heavy carrying with the pressure of completing a mission under time and environmental constraints.

The “rat-run”
The “rat-run” sent recruits through dark, narrow tunnels. The exercise tested claustrophobia, navigation and composure in an environment where visibility and freedom of movement were limited.
The cargo-plane water escape
Episode 2 placed recruits inside an old cargo plane. They were strapped in and lowered into a dam approximately 215 feet below before attempting an underwater escape. The episode then moved into military-style boxing, adding a direct physical-combat element after the recruits had already been tested in the water.
High-altitude crossings
One urban exercise involved a ladder crossing between buildings approximately 50 feet above the streets. Episode 6 presented an even more exposed challenge: a 165-foot rope crossing suspended roughly 200 feet above a canyon floor. The same episode also featured “Murderball,” a team challenge that emphasized force, coordination and controlled aggression.
Hostage retrieval and “Death Letters”
Episode 7 included a simulated hostage-retrieval scenario involving deadly gas, followed by an obstacle course and the emotionally charged “Death Letters” exercise. These segments combined physical fatigue with psychological pressure, a recurring feature of the series’ format.

Mountain loads and helicopter work
In Episode 8, recruits carried tires, ropes and chains up a mountain before taking part in an extraction operation. Other season highlights included a helicopter rappel and missions requiring recruits to move through or respond to urban-warfare-style environments.
How does the elimination format work?
Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test does not use audience votes or conventional weekly eliminations. Recruits can withdraw, be removed for medical reasons or fail a task or stage. The directing staff can also determine that a participant has not met the required standard.
That distinction matters when describing the cast’s progress. A recruit does not necessarily leave because viewers voted them out, and the season does not present a standard cash-prize tournament. It is better understood as a survival and selection experiment in which the final participants are those who continue through the course and satisfy the staff’s requirements.

- Kody Brown
- Andrew East

- Brianna LaPaglia
- Gia Giudice
The final sequence began with a simulated capture and interrogation. Brown and East did not pass that stage. LaPaglia subsequently withdrew before completing the last simulated-burial challenge.
That left Shawn Johnson East and Gia Giudice as the two recruits who completed the course and were recognized as the Season 4 winners. The result placed two women at the center of the finale and gave the season’s family storyline a notable ending: Johnson East finished while her husband, Andrew East, fell short at the final stage, and Gia Giudice completed the course while her mother, Teresa Giudice, did not reach the final five.
Rank #4
“Winner” should be read in the context of this format. The series is not presented as a conventional vote-based contest with a standard championship prize; its emphasis is on completing the selection-style experience and meeting the directing staff’s expectations.

The directing staff led the exercises, set standards and evaluated whether recruits could continue. Their presence is central to the show’s premise, but the program remains a televised competition series rather than a literal military qualification course.
What was the biggest Season 4 news?
A new country and a different visual style
Moving to Morocco shifted the season toward desert heat, urban structures, tunnels, water escapes and high-altitude crossings. The challenges felt less tied to one traditional training-ground setting and more like a succession of simulated field operations.
Family members competing in the same course
The Decker, East and Giudice pairings made relationships part of the season’s narrative without making them the official scoring system. Each connected recruit still had to face the consequences of their own performance.
Smollett’s return to FOX
Smollett’s appearance was a major casting hook in the advance coverage. His inclusion helped broaden a cast that already combined athletes, reality personalities, actors, a model, musicians and online creators.
Two women completed the final course
Shawn Johnson East and Gia Giudice were the only two recruits recognized as Season 4 finishers. Their result became one of the defining stories of the finale, particularly because both competed alongside family members who did not complete the same final path.
