Casting has begun, but the next 007 actor has not been announced.

Who is making Bond 26?
Denis Villeneuve is the director
Amazon MGM has officially appointed Denis Villeneuve to direct the next James Bond film. In the studio’s announcement, Villeneuve described Bond as sacred territory and said he wanted to respect the character’s tradition while creating a route toward future missions. The announcement also confirmed Tanya Lapointe as executive producer.
Villeneuve’s major directing credits include Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, Sicario and the Dune films. Those movies demonstrate the range of his work with science fiction, espionage, action and large-scale cinematic storytelling, but they do not prove what his Bond film will look like. There is still no official information about its tone, rating, cinematography, action style or visual approach. The director’s previous films are useful context—not a substitute for production details.

Amazon MGM’s director announcement is the primary confirmation of Villeneuve’s involvement.
Amy Pascal and David Heyman are producing
Amy Pascal will produce through Pascal Pictures, while David Heyman will produce through Heyday Films. Amazon MGM announced the pair as producers in February 2025 and presented them as experienced franchise filmmakers.
The producing team is significant, but it does not reveal the story or the eventual cast. No official announcement has identified a villain, a returning character, a female lead, a supporting ensemble or any other principal cast member.
Amazon MGM’s producer announcement confirms Pascal and Heyman’s roles.
Steven Knight is writing the screenplay
Steven Knight is the confirmed screenwriter. Amazon MGM’s May 2026 update names Knight, but the studio has not released a synopsis or described the screenplay’s development history.
That means several frequently asked questions remain unanswered. The film has not been identified as an adaptation of a particular Ian Fleming novel, and there is no confirmed working title, setting, villain, time period, production budget or connection to a specific earlier story. Until Amazon MGM publishes those details, descriptions of the screenplay as a remake, prequel or direct continuation would be speculation.
Has the next James Bond actor been cast?
No. Amazon MGM has not publicly announced the next James Bond actor.
The studio said in May 2026 that the search for the next Bond had begun and that it would not discuss specific casting details while the process was under way. Trade reporting adds more detail: Variety reported that auditions had been taking place for several weeks and identified Nina Gold as the casting director leading the search.

Variety also reported that Tom Francis auditioned for the role. An audition is not an offer, a finalist designation or a casting announcement. No official source has said that Francis—or any other actor—has been selected.
Other actor names circulating in entertainment coverage, betting markets and fan discussions should be treated as rumor unless Amazon MGM confirms them. A shortlist, an audition report and an online prediction are three different things:
- Confirmed casting: an announcement from Amazon MGM or an official production release.
- Trade-reported audition: credible reporting that an actor tested or was considered, without proof of selection.
- Speculation: a rumor, prediction, betting-market favorite or fan wish list.
The currently available evidence reaches only the first stage for the creative team and the second stage for some casting information. It does not identify the next 007.
For the audition reporting, see Variety’s report on the Bond casting process.
When will the next Bond movie be released?
There is no announced release date or release year. The Associated Press has also reported that the film has no confirmed date.
Some reporting in May 2026 placed 2028 or 2029 as a possible earliest window. That should not be presented as a release date, however. It is an unconfirmed scheduling possibility rather than a date announced by Amazon MGM.
A later release is also understandable given the project’s current status. Casting had only recently begun in May 2026, and the screenplay was still being developed. It is reasonable to infer that a near-term release would be unlikely, but that is an inference from the production stage—not an official timetable.
The safest wording is therefore: Bond 26 has no release date; 2028 or 2029 has been mentioned as an unconfirmed possibility. Any article, social post or video presenting one of those years as locked should be treated cautiously.

What will the movie be about?
Nothing official is known about the plot. Amazon MGM has not announced:
- a synopsis or story premise;
- the film’s main villain or antagonist;
- a mission, location or geopolitical conflict;
- a Bond girl or other romantic storyline;
- returning characters such as M, Q, Moneypenny or Felix Leiter;
- the time period in which the story is set;
- whether the screenplay draws from a particular Fleming novel; or
- the film’s relationship to any previous Bond continuity.
It is also too early to infer the plot from Villeneuve’s filmography. A director’s past work can inform expectations, but it cannot establish that the new Bond will be dark, slow-burning, science-fiction-influenced, realistic or unusually long. None of those details has been announced.
Is Bond 26 a reboot after Daniel Craig?
The film follows No Time to Die, which was released in 2021 and concluded Daniel Craig’s five-film tenure as James Bond. Craig’s Bond dies at the end of that film, creating an obvious narrative reset point for the franchise.
Even so, Amazon MGM has not officially called the next film a reboot. It has not described it as a remake, prequel, origin story or direct sequel either. The most accurate description is that a new Bond era is expected, while the precise continuity plan remains undisclosed.
That distinction matters. “A new era” can describe a new actor and a new creative direction without answering whether the film exists in a completely separate continuity or preserves selected elements of the earlier films. Until the studio explains its approach, claims about the new film’s canon are premature.
Why Amazon MGM now controls future Bond films
The next film is being made under a substantially different governance arrangement from the Daniel Craig era. Amazon acquired MGM in 2022, gaining access to MGM’s film and television library and previously holding distribution rights to Bond films through that acquisition.
On March 24, 2025, Amazon MGM Studios, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli completed a joint-venture arrangement concerning the James Bond intellectual-property rights. The parties remain co-owners, but Amazon MGM gained creative control over future Bond productions. Wilson stepped back from producing the films, while Broccoli said she would focus on other projects.

This is a change in decision-making authority, not a statement that Amazon MGM became the sole owner of James Bond. The official announcement describes continued co-ownership alongside Amazon MGM’s control over future creative decisions.
Amazon MGM’s announcement about the Bond joint venture explains the rights and governance change.
Will the next Bond movie be released in theaters or on streaming?
There is no formal distribution announcement for Bond 26. The official Villeneuve announcement emphasizes theatrical audiences and immersive cinema, which indicates that the filmmakers are discussing the experience in cinematic terms. It does not, by itself, establish a release date, an exclusive theatrical window, a streaming service, or a day-and-date plan.
It is therefore premature to say that the film will be streaming-only—or to claim a specific theatrical rollout—as a confirmed fact. Amazon MGM has not yet announced the film’s platform strategy.

A separate James Bond video game called 007 First Light is sometimes mentioned alongside the movie, but it is not Bond 26 and does not provide confirmed information about the film’s actor, story or release schedule.
Reporting in June 2026 said Amazon MGM holds rights to future Bond videogames, while describing the company’s relationship with IO Interactive and indicating that it was too early to discuss projects beyond that relationship. That videogame-rights situation is separate from the development of the next Bond movie.
PC Gamer’s report on Amazon MGM and future Bond games covers that distinction.

How to catch up while waiting for the film
The most useful way to prepare is to separate the Craig era from the still-undefined next chapter. Craig’s five-film run ends with No Time to Die, but there is no requirement to assume that Bond 26 will directly continue its plot. Rewatching the earlier films can provide franchise context; it cannot reveal the new film’s casting or continuity plan.
If you want the literary source material while waiting, the Ian Fleming’s James Bond novels collection on the official 007 Store includes Fleming titles such as Moonraker. The screenplay for Bond 26 has not been identified as an adaptation of any particular novel, so these books are franchise background rather than confirmed source material for the new film.
The official 007 website and store also promote Bond books and merchandise, but none of those products has been identified as merchandise for the untitled next movie. Product availability and editions can change, so readers should check the current listing before buying.
How to evaluate the next Bond announcement
Until the film is further along, a simple source hierarchy will prevent most misinformation:
- Start with Amazon MGM. Its announcements are the strongest available evidence for the director, producers, writer, executive producer and official casting statements.
- Use reputable trade reporting for process details. Variety’s reporting is the basis for the audition information and Nina Gold’s involvement, but an audition report is not a casting confirmation.
- Look for a formal production announcement before accepting a date. A reported 2028 or 2029 window is not equivalent to a scheduled release.
- Ignore unsupported casting certainty. Betting odds, unnamed-source rumors, social-media lists and fan campaigns do not cast James Bond.
- Check whether a story concerns the film at all. Bond videogames, books and merchandise belong to the wider 007 franchise but do not automatically reveal information about the movie.
The most accurate answer right now
The next James Bond movie is taking shape, but it is not yet a fully announced production. The confirmed core is Denis Villeneuve directing a screenplay by Steven Knight, with Amy Pascal and David Heyman producing and Tanya Lapointe serving as executive producer. Amazon MGM controls the future creative direction of the franchise, and casting has begun.
Everything most readers want to know next—the identity of 007, the title, story, release date and trailer—remains unrevealed. Until those announcements arrive, “an untitled Bond film in development with casting under way” is more accurate than any rumored actor, release year or plot synopsis.
