Joan Hannington is alive and, according to the latest credible public reports, living quietly on England’s South Coast with her two dogs. The former jewel thief—known in London’s criminal underworld as “The Godmother”—became the real-life inspiration for ITV’s six-part drama Joan, starring Sophie Turner.
Her exact town, address and daily routine have not been reliably disclosed. That privacy matters: Hannington is a living person, and the television series is an inspired-by drama rather than a scene-by-scene documentary of her life.
Where is Joan Hannington now?
The latest publicly sourced accounts place Joan Hannington living privately on England’s South Coast with her two dogs. She has been described as a mother of two and a grandmother. Her son Benny, a musician, was publicly associated with the 2024 premiere of Joan, and Hannington herself appeared during the programme’s launch and promotion.
Beyond that broad description, the reliable public record becomes limited. There is no sound basis for naming her current town, street, home or employer. Reports or social-media posts claiming to identify her precise whereabouts should not be treated as verified evidence.

What happened to Joan Hannington after her criminal career?
Hannington’s memoir and later interviews describe a period in which she became a highly accomplished jewellery thief. Her methods included disguises, impersonation and the concealment of valuable stones. Some accounts say she swallowed diamonds, a detail that also appears in reporting about the television drama.
Her criminal career was not the same thing as a criminal conviction for every theft described in the memoir. The available accounts say Hannington was imprisoned for an offence involving a stolen cheque book. She was arrested at about the age of 24 and received a 30-month sentence at Holloway. The reporting used for this article does not establish that she was convicted or imprisoned for the jewel thefts recounted in her memoir.
After her release, accounts based on her own story say that she worked in, or managed, a jewellery business while continuing to steal. Her eventual departure from crime is linked in later coverage to the death of her husband, Boisie Hannington.
Who was Boisie Hannington?
Boisie Hannington was involved in London’s criminal milieu and was associated with antiques businesses. According to accounts of Joan Hannington’s memoir and the television coverage, he died in a fire while attempting an insurance fraud.

After his death, Hannington is reported to have sold the antiques businesses connected with him and turned away from criminal activity. Later accounts describe her moving into legitimate property-related work, including buying, selling or refurbishing council homes.
The precise details of this transition are drawn largely from Hannington’s memoir and retrospective reporting, rather than from a complete public business record. It is best understood as the course she described for herself: a move away from theft and toward supporting her family and building a legal life.
What did Joan Hannington say about her past?
An important first-person source is a 1998 ITV News interview, recorded long before the drama was made. In it, Hannington said she had given up her criminal life to look after her family. She also explained that successful theft depended on appearing to belong in the environment being targeted.

It does, however, provide a useful counterweight to the more sensational descriptions of her as a legendary thief. Hannington was presenting her own explanation of how she operated and why she eventually stopped.
What is true about the daughter storyline in Joan?
The drama changes the name of Hannington’s real daughter, Debbie, to Kelly. The emotional foundation of the storyline is connected to Hannington’s memoir: her difficult relationship with crime, unstable domestic circumstances and determination to create a safer future for her child.

According to accounts based on the memoir, Debbie was placed in care while Hannington tried to escape an unstable situation and rebuild her life. Hannington was later imprisoned following an arrest connected with using a stolen car to visit her daughter.
The public record is much less certain about Debbie’s adult life. Reliable entertainment reporting does not establish her current whereabouts or the present state of her relationship with her mother. The ending of Joan, or speculation surrounding it, should not be presented as proof of what happened privately between them.

Joan is based on Hannington’s life and memoirs, but it is not a documentary. ITV describes the series as inspired by her life. The production team also worked with Hannington: screenwriter Anna Symon met her during the writing process, and ITV News reported that Hannington met Sophie Turner during production.
That makes the programme closely informed by its subject, but it does not mean that every scene, character or incident is historically exact. The publisher’s material for Hannington’s memoir warns that some characters are composites and that names and locations may have been changed. Contemporary reporting likewise emphasizes that the series rearranges or fictionalizes particular events, relationships and identities.
The fairest description is that Joan captures the broad emotional and criminal trajectory of Hannington’s memoir while taking substantial dramatic liberties with the details.

Details grounded in Hannington’s account
- Her identity as a prolific British jewellery thief active mainly during the 1970s and 1980s.
- Her reputation in parts of London’s criminal underworld as “The Godmother.”
- The use of disguises, altered appearances and impersonation.
- The presence of her daughter and the pressure that family responsibilities placed on her choices.
- Accounts involving the concealment or swallowing of diamonds.
- Her eventual move away from criminal activity and toward a legitimate life.
Details viewers should not treat as literal history
- The names used for every character, including the daughter’s name Kelly in place of Debbie.
- The exact sequence and timing of events.
- Whether a particular robbery or confrontation happened exactly as shown.
- Whether a character represents one real person or a composite of several people.
- The precise details of private family relationships after the period depicted.
Changing names and major events also had a practical purpose. Hannington is still alive, and the production’s creators have indicated that the drama was not intended to disclose the specific mechanics or identities associated with every crime.
The memoir behind the series
Hannington’s original memoir was published in 2002 under the title I Am What I Am. A 2024 edition was republished as Joan: The True Story of How I Became Britain’s Most Notorious Diamond Thief. The updated title and marketing language reflect the renewed interest generated by ITV’s drama, but promotional descriptions should not be mistaken for independently verified law-enforcement rankings.
For readers who want Hannington’s own version of the story, read Joan Hannington’s memoir, the source material behind much of the series. It is worth approaching it as an autobiographical account: valuable for understanding how Hannington explains her motives and experiences, but not as independent confirmation that every remembered event occurred exactly as described.
The original 2002 edition, I Am What I Am, is another possible route for readers interested in the earlier publication. The 2024 edition is the version most directly tied to the ITV series and is available in paperback, ebook and audiobook formats according to the publisher’s material. Availability varies by country and retailer.

Her memoir, the 1998 interview and the 2024 publicity provide evidence about her past and her public involvement with Joan. They do not justify claims about her current home, finances, work schedule, health or private family life.
