It’s official: KPop Demon Hunters is getting a sequel. Netflix confirmed the follow-up on March 12, 2026, with original directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans returning. The sequel is reportedly targeting 2029, but Netflix has not announced a firm release date, final title, plot synopsis, or returning voice cast.
What has been confirmed about KPop Demon Hunters 2?
Netflix has officially announced a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters. The project will be the first production made under Netflix’s exclusive multiyear writing-and-directing partnership with Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans across animation. Sony Pictures Animation, which produced the first film, is also returning as a partner.
That gives the sequel a confirmed studio relationship and creative leadership, but the announcement is still light on production details. Netflix has not yet announced the film’s final title, story, cast, songs, or exact premiere date. Netflix’s official announcement confirms the project without presenting it as a complete package of returning characters and performers.

Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans
The clearest returning names are the directors. Kang and Appelhans directed the first KPop Demon Hunters, and Netflix’s announcement identifies them as the creative team behind the follow-up. The wider deal describes them as writers and directors, so their involvement goes beyond a simple producing or consulting role.

Their return matters because the first movie’s blend of K-pop performance, supernatural action, comedy, and Korean-inspired mythology was closely tied to its creative identity. The sequel will therefore be developed by the filmmakers who established the world, rather than being handed to an unrelated animation team.
The voice cast is not confirmed yet
Netflix has not formally announced the returning voice cast. That means Arden Cho, May Hong, Ji-young Yoo, Ahn Hyo-seop, and the other performers from the first film should not yet be described as confirmed sequel cast members.
It would be reasonable to expect the central characters to remain important if the sequel continues the first film’s story, but expectation is not an announcement. Until Netflix, Sony Pictures Animation, or the performers’ representatives confirm casting, reports of the entire original cast returning should be treated cautiously.
When could the sequel be released?
The best-supported estimate is 2029. In November 2025, Variety reported that Netflix and Sony had finalized a deal for another animated musical and were planning around a 2029 release. The report also noted that the schedule could change as production develops. Variety’s report predates Netflix’s formal March 2026 confirmation.
Netflix’s official announcement confirmed the sequel but did not give a specific day, month, or final release year. The most accurate wording is therefore that the movie is targeting 2029 according to earlier trade reporting, not that it definitely releases in 2029.
Animated features can move significantly during development because storyboarding, voice recording, animation, musical production, editing, and visual-effects work must all be coordinated. A 2029 target could be revised without meaning that the project has been cancelled.

What will KPop Demon Hunters 2 be about?
At present, there is no official plot synopsis. Netflix has not revealed a new villain, a central conflict, new locations, a song list, or whether the sequel begins immediately after the first film’s ending.
One useful creative clue comes from a 2025 Variety interview with Maggie Kang. She explained that the first movie was primarily Rumi’s story and said the filmmakers had developed backstories for Zoey and Mira that were not fully used. Kang expressed interest in exploring those characters more deeply in a future installment. That makes expanded roles for Zoey and Mira a credible possibility, but it does not confirm the sequel’s plot.
What the first film sets up
In the original movie, Rumi, Mira, and Zoey live dual lives as members of the K-pop group HUNTR/X and as demon hunters. Their supernatural conflict involves the Honmoon barrier and the rival Saja Boys, led by Jinu. Netflix’s guide to the first film provides the basic story and character context.
The ending leaves several possible paths open. Rumi rejects the idea that demons and humans must remain permanently separated, HUNTR/X defeats the immediate threat, and the group continues performing for its fans. Those developments could support a sequel about a changed relationship between the human and demon worlds, a new supernatural threat, or the consequences of challenging the old order.
However, those are story possibilities—not announced sequel details. There is currently no confirmation that Jinu will return, that the Honmoon mythology will expand globally, that Rumi’s family history will become the central mystery, or that HUNTR/X will face a new rival music group.
What is speculation—and what is not?
Several sequel ideas are circulating because the first film leaves room for them. Here is the important distinction:

- Confirmed: Netflix is making a sequel with Kang and Appelhans returning as directors.
- Reported target: The project has been planned around a 2029 release, subject to change.
- Credible possibility: Zoey and Mira could receive more backstory or screen time, based on Kang’s previous comments.
- Unconfirmed: Jinu’s return, a specific new villain, a global Honmoon storyline, Rumi’s family history, or a new rival group.
- Not yet announced: The original voice cast, the songs, the final title, and the official synopsis.
This distinction is especially important because franchise announcements often trigger fan theories long before a studio releases casting or story information. A theory can be exciting without being evidence of what the filmmakers have planned.
Why Netflix is making a sequel
The commercial case is straightforward. Netflix said in its March 2026 announcement that KPop Demon Hunters had surpassed 500 million views on the service since its June 2025 debut. Netflix also reported that the film won both of its 2026 Oscar nominations: Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Golden.”
Those results help explain why Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation would want to continue the property. They do not, however, guarantee a particular budget, theatrical release, soundtrack lineup, episode or film format, or production schedule for the sequel. None of those details has been announced.
What can fans buy while waiting?
There is already licensed merchandise connected to the first film, including books, dolls, light sticks, toys, costumes, apparel, accessories, and collectibles. Netflix’s official merchandise guide identifies products and licensees associated with the franchise, including Mattel, Hasbro, Furby-related products, Anua, and other partners.

For fans who want something available ahead of sequel news, the official KPop Demon Hunters coloring book is a clearly identified physical release. Penguin Random House lists KPop Demon Hunters: The Official Deluxe Coloring Book as an 80-page title from Random House Worlds, published July 14, 2026. Availability and pricing can vary by retailer, so check the current listing before buying.
The Art of KPop Demon Hunters is another relevant option for readers more interested in character design, visual development, and production material. For dolls, light sticks, costumes, or collectibles, verify the licensing information, seller, and product details rather than assuming that every marketplace listing is officially authorized.
Merchandise can be a good way to revisit the first film, but it does not reveal the sequel’s story or confirm which characters will return.
How to follow reliable sequel updates
- Check Netflix Tudum and Netflix’s official social channels. These are the strongest sources for release-date, title, synopsis, and casting announcements.
- Look for studio confirmation. Sony Pictures Animation is the production partner, so official studio communications may provide additional production information.
- Separate trade reporting from official confirmation. A report about a 2029 target is useful, but it is not the same as Netflix publishing a firm premiere date.
- Watch the wording around cast announcements. “In talks,” “expected to return,” and “returning” do not carry the same level of certainty.
- Be skeptical of plot leaks without corroboration. Until an official synopsis appears, details about villains, songs, mythology, and character arcs remain unverified.
Where to watch before the sequel
The original KPop Demon Hunters is available on Netflix, which is also the service behind the confirmed sequel project. Rewatching the first film is the most useful preparation while waiting for official information, especially if you want to revisit Rumi, Mira, Zoey, HUNTR/X, the Saja Boys, Jinu, and the Honmoon conflict. Netflix’s sequel announcement confirms the project’s relationship with the service.
