The Rookie Season 8 began filming unusually early because showrunner Alexi Hawley was preparing to launch the planned spinoff The Rookie: North. Hawley was overseeing both series, and reports said he expected North to enter production in late winter or spring. Starting work on the flagship series early allowed the production to complete as much of Season 8 as possible before Hawley had to focus on the new show.
That was not the only pressure on the schedule. Season 8 also included a major Prague shoot, while ABC deliberately held the season for a January 6, 2026 premiere and an 18-episode midseason run. The early filming was therefore a production-management decision tied primarily to the spinoff, supported by an international storyline and the network’s scheduling strategy—not evidence that ABC had lost confidence in the series.
The short answer: Hawley needed a head start on both shows
The Rookie Season 8 was filmed ahead of its January 6, 2026 broadcast premiere so the production could bank episodes before Alexi Hawley moved into the next phase of developing The Rookie: North.
A report published in September 2025 said Hawley expected the spinoff to begin shooting in late winter or spring. Because he was the creative leader of the original series and the planned spinoff, completing a substantial amount of Season 8 beforehand would reduce the conflict between the two productions. The practical goal was to give The Rookie enough completed material to support its midseason run while Hawley concentrated on launching North.

That explanation comes from contemporaneous production reporting. It should not be overstated as an official ABC statement that the spinoff was the sole reason for the early start. The available evidence supports a primary production-management explanation, with other factors—including the Prague shoot and ABC’s unusual broadcast plan—also contributing.
Why the spinoff created a scheduling problem
The Rookie: North was not simply another idea being discussed in a writers’ room. It developed into a substantial new production with its own pilot, cast, police-training requirements and Vancouver-based location work.
The project was first reported in December 2024 as a second The Rookie offshoot in development at ABC, Lionsgate Television and 20th Television. Hawley was attached to create, write and executive-produce it, while Nathan Fillion was also reported as an executive producer.
By 2026, the project had a title and a central premise. The Rookie: North stars Jay Ellis as Alex Holland, a man who joins the Pierce County Police Department as its oldest rookie after a violent home invasion causes him to reassess his purpose. The series is set in the Pacific Northwest and films in Vancouver. Fillion is expected to appear as John Nolan in the pilot and executive-produce the spinoff.

Hawley told TV Insider that the pilot had been completed and described the show as recognizably connected to The Rookie while having a different energy because of its Pacific Northwest setting. He also said the pilot was filmed in Vancouver and that the series would probably shoot there as well.
Those facts make the early Season 8 start logical: Hawley had to help finish one established network drama while preparing a separate police series in another production environment. It is reasonable to conclude that the flagship series was moved forward to create a buffer. However, there is no confirmed public figure for exactly how many episodes were completed early, and the evidence does not establish that the two shows filmed simultaneously.
The Prague shoot added another layer of complexity
Season 8 also required an overseas production for its premiere storyline. Cast members filmed in Prague, Czech Republic, for an international operation involving John Nolan, Bailey Nune and Nyla Harper and connected to Monica Stevens.
Hawley described the Prague decision as both a creative and financial discussion. The production absorbed the trip within its existing budget and chose Prague partly for its cinematic qualities and favorable economics.

An international shoot does not replace the spinoff explanation, but it helps explain why an early production start was useful. Overseas filming involves location planning, travel, logistics and coordination beyond the normal work of a studio-based episode. The Prague material was therefore a contributing production factor, not the clearest answer to why Season 8 started so early.
ABC had already chosen a midseason strategy
The early filming also made sense because ABC was not planning to launch Season 8 in its traditional fall window. The network scheduled the Season 8 premiere for January 6, 2026.
TVLine reported that The Rookie and Will Trent would return in early 2026 with uninterrupted 18-episode runs. ABC executive Craig Erwich said the previous year’s “wait-and-spree” approach had worked especially well: the network combined strong New Year’s promotion with shows that already had committed audiences.
In other words, the gap between filming and broadcasting was intentional. ABC could allow production to get ahead, hold the season, and then present it as a concentrated midseason event rather than beginning in the fall and building in a long break.

That schedule explains why viewers saw Season 8 in January even though filming had begun months earlier. It also explains why the early production should not be interpreted as a cancellation warning, a loss of network confidence or proof that the series was being rushed off the air.

What happened to The Rookie: North?
ABC ultimately added The Rookie: North to its 2026–2027 scripted lineup on May 12, 2026. The network described it as a new midseason series and highlighted The Rookie as one of its strongest multiplatform programs during the 2025–2026 broadcast season.
The reported principal cast includes Jay Ellis, Chris Sullivan, Karen Fukuhara, Froy Gutierrez, Janet Montgomery, Mya Lowe and Malik Watson. The new series is set in Washington state’s Pacific Northwest region and is being filmed in Vancouver.
ABC later confirmed that the original series had been renewed for Season 9 and would return in 2027 alongside The Rookie: North. ABC said the Season 8 finale reached 9.25 million total viewers after seven days of viewing, while the season averaged 9.04 million total viewers on its multiplatform measurement.

- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
Those developments make the scheduling explanation clearer in hindsight. The early Season 8 work occurred while the spinoff was moving from development toward production, and the spinoff was ultimately ordered to series. Still, the later renewal does not retroactively prove that every production decision was made for one reason. The most accurate account is that North created the main scheduling pressure, Prague increased the logistical demands, and ABC’s midseason strategy made an early production lead useful.
What the early filming does—and does not—mean
It does mean:
- Season 8 was filmed before its January 2026 premiere.
- Hawley needed to manage the flagship show while preparing The Rookie: North.
- The production had additional logistical work because of the Prague storyline.
- ABC wanted an 18-episode midseason run with minimal interruption.
It does not mean:
- ABC publicly confirmed that The Rookie: North was the only reason Season 8 filmed early.
- The two series were confirmed to have filmed at the same time.
- A precise number of Season 8 episodes was publicly identified as having been “banked” for the spinoff.
- The Rookie: North was a backdoor pilot. Reporting describes it as receiving its own separately ordered pilot.
- Season 9 or The Rookie: North has a confirmed premiere date more specific than 2027.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why did The Rookie Season 8 film so early?
The main reported reason was Alexi Hawley’s work on The Rookie: North. Because he was overseeing both shows and expected the spinoff to begin production in late winter or spring, the flagship series started early so it could complete more episodes before that work intensified.
When did The Rookie Season 8 premiere?
Season 8 premiered on ABC on January 6, 2026, as part of the network’s midseason schedule.

When will The Rookie: North and Season 9 premiere?
ABC confirmed that both The Rookie: North and The Rookie Season 9 would return in 2027. No more specific premiere date was confirmed in the available research.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The Rookie Season 8 filmed early mainly because Alexi Hawley had to prepare The Rookie: North for its own production window. The Prague international shoot added logistical pressure, and ABC’s decision to hold Season 8 for an uninterrupted 18-episode midseason run made the head start practical. It was a coordinated production and scheduling choice—not a sign that the original series was in trouble.
