If someone lives outside your Netflix Household, the better long-term choice is usually a separate Netflix account—not simply adding them as an extra member. In the United States, the price difference at the cheapest comparable level is only $1 per month: Netflix lists Standard with ads at $8.99 per month, while an ad-supported extra member costs $7.99 per month. The extra-member option is slightly cheaper, but the account owner still controls the slot, billing, and access.
That makes this less a question of saving money than of deciding who should control the subscription. Choose an extra member for a subsidized arrangement that the primary account holder is happy to manage. Choose a separate account if the viewer wants independence, continuity, and control over their own payment and recovery details.
Separate Netflix account vs. extra member
Netflix does not permit ordinary password sharing with someone outside the account owner’s Household. The supported choices are to create a separate account or use Netflix’s extra-member feature, where that feature is available and the account qualifies.
| Factor | Separate account | Extra member |
|---|---|---|
| Who pays? | The new account holder | The primary Netflix account owner |
| Who manages access? | The new account holder | The primary account owner |
| U.S. entry-level price in the cited Netflix listing | Standard with ads: $8.99/month | With ads: $7.99/month |
| Account independence | Full control over payment, recovery, and cancellation | Dependent on the primary account and its eligible plan |
| What happens if the primary account is canceled? | Nothing to the separate account | The extra member is canceled with the primary membership |
| Profile history | May be transferable when opening the account | May be transferable when becoming an extra member |
The extra member saves $1 per month against the U.S. Standard-with-ads price in the cited listing. That is a real saving, but it is small enough that many viewers will find the administrative independence of a separate account more valuable.

Why a separate Netflix account is usually the better option
1. You control the payment and recovery details
With a separate account, the viewer—not a parent, former partner, friend, or relative—controls the email address, password, payment method, account recovery, and cancellation decision. There is no need to ask another person to resend an invitation, update a card, restore access, or keep an extra slot available.
An extra member has a separate login, password, and profile, but it is not a fully independent subscription. Netflix states that the primary account owner purchases and manages the extra-member slot. The owner remains responsible for the payment, and the extra member’s access depends on that account continuing to exist and remain eligible.
2. Your access survives changes to the other person’s account
An extra member can disappear if the primary subscriber cancels Netflix. Access can also be affected if the owner changes plans or moves from direct Netflix billing to a package that does not support extra members. That may be perfectly acceptable for a short-term family arrangement, but it is a poor foundation for a service you expect to use for years.
A separate membership avoids those dependencies. If the original account owner downgrades, cancels, changes payment providers, or changes household arrangements, the independent account continues on its own terms.

3. The small price difference may not justify the dependency
Netflix’s cited U.S.-dollar pricing lists:
- Standard with ads: $8.99 per month
- Standard: $19.99 per month
- Premium: $26.99 per month
- Extra member with ads: $7.99 per month
- Extra member without ads: $9.99 per month
On those prices, an ad-supported extra member costs $1 less than an independent Standard-with-ads account. The saving is $12 over a year before applicable taxes. Whether that is worthwhile depends on the relationship and the expected duration of the arrangement. For a long-term viewer, paying the extra dollar may be a reasonable price for control over the subscription.

Netflix prices, taxes, plan availability, and extra-member eligibility vary by country. Package or add-on billing can also produce different pricing and restrictions, so these figures should not be treated as a worldwide price list.
When an extra member does make sense
An extra member is a reasonable choice when the primary account owner deliberately wants to subsidize someone outside the Household and is comfortable remaining responsible for the arrangement.
Choose the extra-member route when all of the following are true:
- The primary account owner is on an eligible Netflix plan.
- The owner is willing to pay for and manage the slot.
- The account is billed in a way that supports extra members.
- The owner and extra member meet Netflix’s country requirements.
- Both people accept that the extra member’s access ends if the primary membership ends.
- The $1-per-month U.S. saving matters more than complete independence.
Netflix’s U.S. plan information says Standard permits one extra member and Premium permits up to two. Netflix also says that extra-member availability varies by country and package. Standard with ads cannot add extra members, despite the fact that an extra member can be purchased with ads. This distinction is easy to miss: the primary account must have an eligible plan, and the extra-member billing option is not available to every subscriber.
Extra-member eligibility and restrictions
The primary plan must qualify
According to Netflix’s documented plan rules, Standard allows one extra member and Premium allows up to two. The account must also be eligible in the relevant country. A plan that does not support the feature cannot be made eligible simply by sharing its password.

Country requirements apply
Netflix says an extra member must activate in the same country in which the account owner created the account. This matters for international families, people who have recently moved, and viewers who regularly live in different countries. Do not assume that an invitation will work merely because both people can access Netflix from their current locations.
Package billing may block the feature
Some accounts billed through a third party, mobile provider, television provider, or other package do not support extra members. Netflix also warns that changing or replacing a package can remove extra members if the new arrangement does not support them.
If the account is not billed directly to Netflix, check the account’s specific eligibility before making plans around an extra-member slot. A separate account may be the simpler option, although package-specific pricing and availability can differ.
How the primary account owner adds an extra member
For an eligible account, Netflix’s documented workflow is handled from the account page:
- Sign in as the primary account owner.
- Open the account page.
- Select “Buy an extra member slot.”
- Review the revised payment amount.
- Choose whether the extra member receives the ad-supported or no-ads option, where offered.
- Send the invitation to the intended viewer.
- Have the invited person activate the extra-member account in the required country.
The exact screens can vary by country, plan, and billing method. If the option is missing, the account may be ineligible, the plan may not support extra members, or the subscription may be billed through a package or third party.

Can you keep your Netflix profile and watch history?
Starting a separate account does not necessarily mean abandoning all of your Netflix personalization. Netflix supports profile transfer in situations where someone starts a new account or becomes an extra member. A successful transfer can include recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games, and settings.

There are important limitations. Netflix says the main profile, a Kids profile, and a PIN-protected profile cannot be transferred through the extra-member instructions. If the profile you want to move falls into one of those categories, you may need to create a new profile and rebuild some preferences manually. Transfer availability and conditions can also change, so check the transfer prompt carefully before confirming.
For an ordinary adult profile that is eligible for transfer, this feature significantly reduces the inconvenience of moving to an independent membership. You can gain control of the account without necessarily losing your recommendations and viewing history.

Do not treat ordinary password sharing as a third option. Netflix states that an account may not be shared outside the Household except through its supported extra-member mechanism or by having the other person create their own account.
Continuing to share the owner’s login also creates practical problems: the account owner may receive verification prompts, devices may be challenged, profiles can become mixed together, and neither person has clean control over billing or account recovery. An extra member or separate membership gives each viewer a distinct login instead.

A simple decision guide
Start your own Netflix account if:
- You want to pay Netflix directly and manage your own subscription.
- You expect to keep watching for the foreseeable future.
- You may move to another country.
- The primary account owner might cancel, downgrade, or change providers.
- The account is billed through a phone, television, or other package.
- You do not want your access tied to another person’s decisions.
- Saving $1 per month is not worth the dependency.
Use an extra member if:
- The primary account owner is happy to pay and administer the slot.
- The owner has Standard or Premium and the feature is available on that account.
- The extra member can activate in the required country.
- The arrangement is a deliberate family or household-adjacent subsidy.
- Both people accept that the primary owner remains in charge.
Bottom line on Netflix extra members
The extra-member option is not necessarily bad; it is simply less independent than it first appears. In the United States, the cited prices make it only $1 cheaper per month than Standard with ads, while the primary account owner retains responsibility for the slot and payment.
For a temporary or subsidized arrangement, an extra member can be the right answer—provided the plan, country, and billing method qualify. For anyone who wants reliable long-term access, especially after moving out, changing countries, or separating finances, the better option is to start a separate Netflix account and transfer an eligible profile if Netflix offers that option.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Netflix extra member cheaper than a separate account?
In the United States, Netflix’s cited prices list an ad-supported extra member at $7.99 per month and Standard with ads at $8.99 per month. The extra member is therefore $1 cheaper per month before applicable taxes. Prices and availability vary by country and billing arrangement.
Can an extra member use their own Netflix password?
Yes. An extra member has a separate account, password, and profile. However, the primary account owner purchases and manages the slot and remains responsible for the payment.

Can I transfer my Netflix profile to a separate account?
Netflix supports profile transfer when someone starts a new account or becomes an extra member. Recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games, and settings may transfer, but Netflix says the main profile, a Kids profile, and a PIN-protected profile cannot be transferred through its extra-member instructions.
Can someone in another country become my Netflix extra member?
Netflix says the extra member must activate in the same country in which the account owner created the account. Extra-member availability also varies by country, plan, and billing method.
The Bottom Line
Recommendation: use an extra member only when the primary subscriber intentionally wants to pay for and manage the arrangement. Otherwise, start a separate Netflix account. The U.S. price difference is just $1 per month at the entry-level comparison, while an independent account gives the viewer control over billing, recovery, cancellation, and future access.
