It is the strongest all-around choice here: a tightly constructed five-season crime drama with escalating stakes, difficult moral choices, and a transformation arc that keeps rewarding close attention. But “best” depends on what you want to watch. Dark is the best choice for a demanding mystery, The Queen’s Gambit for a polished limited series, Derry Girls for comedy, Squid Game for an international thriller, and The Great British Baking Show for comfort viewing.

It combines critical reception, awards and cultural impact, genre importance, rewatchability, distinctiveness, and how clearly each series serves a particular viewer need. How this list was chosen
This is an editorial selection, not an objective ranking or a live Netflix Top 10. The order within each section is designed to make the list easier to use rather than to assign a precise score. Netflix’s U.S. television pages surface titles through labels such as critically acclaimed, award-winning, familiar, exciting, and short-runtime programming. Critics-led rankings, including Rotten Tomatoes’ separate ranking of Netflix original series, offer another useful signal, but neither popularity nor a category label can measure artistic quality by itself.
The selection also includes licensed programs. Not every show on Netflix is a Netflix original, and a title’s presence in the U.S. catalog does not guarantee availability elsewhere. Netflix’s catalog changes as licenses expire, new seasons arrive, and regional rights shift. Its Top 10 pages are useful for understanding current popularity, but a July 6–12, 2026 snapshot should not be described as the ranking for today. Announced 2026 programming, including titles such as One Hundred Years of Solitude Part 2 and Lupin season 4, is another reminder that the service’s lineup is continually changing; an announcement alone does not prove that a show is available on the day you read this.

What you need to watch
Prestige drama, crime, and historical series
1. Breaking Bad — Best overall
Vince Gilligan’s crime drama remains the safest recommendation for someone who wants a complete, gripping series. Walter White’s transformation from frustrated chemistry teacher to ruthless criminal is not presented as a simple rise-to-power fantasy; every success carries a moral and personal cost. The plotting is unusually controlled, the tension keeps escalating, and the five-season structure gives consequences room to accumulate. Watch it when you want a serious, dark drama that is both immediately compelling and exceptionally rewarding on a second viewing.
2. Better Call Saul — Best character study
This Breaking Bad prequel takes a slower, more patient route, following Jimmy McGill’s struggle to become a respected lawyer while drawing closer to the identity of Saul Goodman. Its legal stories, cartel tension, visual precision, and carefully observed relationships eventually form a major crime saga in their own right. It works best for viewers willing to let character decisions drive the suspense rather than expecting constant action. Watching Breaking Bad first gives certain connections extra weight, but Better Call Saul stands on its own.
3. Ozark — Best for escalating danger
Ozark places a financially desperate family inside an increasingly dangerous criminal operation. Marty and Wendy Byrde are capable, calculating, and morally compromised, but their attempts to protect the family repeatedly create new threats. The series is a strong fit for viewers who want a bleak, high-stakes thriller with family conflict at its center. Its atmosphere is deliberately dark, and its appeal comes less from likable heroes than from watching people rationalize increasingly extreme choices.

Set amid the political and criminal upheavals surrounding postwar Birmingham, Peaky Blinders follows the Shelby family’s ambitions, loyalties, and violent expansion. Cillian Murphy’s central performance gives Tommy Shelby an intense, controlled presence, while the series uses music, costume, and production design to create a highly recognizable style. Choose it for a period crime story with family politics, political violence, and a charismatic but deeply damaged protagonist.
5. Narcos — Best dramatized crime history
Narcos turns the rise of the cocaine trade and the law-enforcement campaigns against it into a propulsive serialized drama. It draws on historical events but remains a dramatization rather than a documentary record, compressing and shaping real history for television. The result is a tense introduction to the power structures, violence, and international consequences surrounding the trade. It is especially suited to viewers who want crime drama with a historical and geopolitical dimension.
6. The Crown — Best royal historical drama
The Crown examines the British monarchy through public duty, private conflict, family pressure, and the changing political world around Queen Elizabeth II. Its appeal lies in polished performances, expansive production design, and the contrast between ceremonial restraint and personal frustration. Because it dramatizes real people and events, it should be watched as historical fiction rather than a definitive account of the past. It is a good choice for viewers who prefer institution-focused drama to conventional action.
7. The Last Kingdom — Best historical adventure
Combining battlefield action, dynastic politics, religious conflict, and personal loyalty, The Last Kingdom follows Uhtred, an outsider caught between competing identities and rival kingdoms. The broad adventure framework gives the series momentum, while its strongest episodes focus on belonging, leadership, and the cost of serving a cause. Pick it when you want a substantial historical saga with battles and political maneuvering, but also a clearly defined personal journey.
8. Money Heist — Best high-concept heist
Originally known as La Casa de Papel, this Spanish ensemble thriller builds its story around elaborate robberies, opposing plans, reversals, romance, and intense emotional identification with the criminals. The series is less interested in procedural realism than in momentum and character allegiance: plans change, loyalties fracture, and every victory creates a new problem. It is ideal for viewers who enjoy cliffhangers, a large ensemble, and the spectacle of an impossible plan repeatedly being revised under pressure.
9. Maid — Best intimate social drama
Maid is a focused limited series about poverty, domestic abuse, precarious work, and a young mother trying to build an independent life. Its emotional power comes from showing how bureaucracy, housing, childcare, and low wages can turn ordinary tasks into obstacles. The series is difficult in places, particularly because of its abuse-related subject matter, but it avoids reducing its protagonist to helplessness. Watch it for a grounded, compassionate drama about survival and self-determination.
10. The Diplomat — Best political thriller
The Diplomat follows an international crisis manager working through geopolitical danger, institutional rivalry, and the complications of a strained marriage. Rather than treating diplomacy as a series of grand speeches, it emphasizes negotiation, information, compromise, and the practical consequences of limited choices. The show fits viewers who want contemporary political suspense with fast dialogue and personal stakes, without requiring a background in international relations.
Science fiction, fantasy, mystery, and horror
11. Stranger Things — Best gateway genre hit
Stranger Things blends coming-of-age adventure, supernatural horror, friendship, and 1980s nostalgia. Its central strength is the way it makes an ensemble of young people, parents, and outsiders feel essential to the same expanding story. The tone moves between warmth, humor, suspense, and genuine danger, making it an accessible entry point for viewers who do not normally choose horror. It is the right pick for a group with different genre preferences.

12. Dark — Best puzzle-box mystery
This German science-fiction mystery begins with disappearances in a small town and expands into an intricate story about time, family secrets, identity, and causality. Dark expects concentration: its mythology and relationships are deliberately interlocking, and the payoff depends on remembering what came before. Subtitles or a dub are both workable, but attentive viewing matters more than the language choice. Choose it when you want a dense, finished-feeling mystery rather than a casual background show.
13. Black Mirror — Best speculative anthology
Each episode of Black Mirror offers a separate speculative story, using technology to examine power, identity, status, intimacy, and social behavior. The episodes vary sharply in tone, from horror and satire to melancholy drama, so the series is best sampled rather than binged in strict expectation of consistency. It is particularly useful for viewers who want short, discussion-provoking stories and do not want to commit to a single continuing plot.
14. Squid Game — Best international survival thriller
Squid Game turns familiar children’s games into a brutal competition in which financial desperation, class inequality, and moral compromise become impossible to ignore. Its visual design is immediately distinctive, but the show’s lasting force comes from the choices contestants make when survival conflicts with solidarity. It is violent and emotionally severe, so it is not a casual family recommendation. For viewers comfortable with that intensity, it is one of Netflix’s defining global hits.

15. Wednesday — Best gothic teen mystery
Centered on Wednesday Addams, this series combines deadpan comedy, school intrigue, supernatural investigation, and gothic atmosphere. The central performance gives the character a distinctive rhythm without eliminating the emotional stakes underneath her sarcasm. The show is a good choice for viewers who want a stylish teen mystery with monsters and eccentric supporting characters, but prefer macabre humor to sustained horror.
16. The Witcher — Best monster-hunting fantasy
The Witcher offers monster hunts, political factions, romance, competing destinies, and a large mythological world. Its early storytelling asks viewers to keep track of shifting timelines and separate character paths before the larger relationships become clearer. Choose it for a fantasy adventure that alternates between episodic danger and broad political plotting. It is more interested in a sprawling world than in a simple good-versus-evil quest.
17. ONE PIECE — Best buoyant live-action adventure
This live-action adaptation of the popular manga and anime emphasizes friendship, found family, humor, colorful settings, and the promise of a vast world beyond the immediate adventure. Its accessibility comes from putting the crew’s relationships ahead of complicated mythology. It is an especially good group watch for viewers who want fantasy adventure with optimism and comic energy rather than relentless grimness.
18. Avatar: The Last Airbender — Best animated fantasy quest
Avatar: The Last Airbender follows a young hero learning responsibility while traveling through a world shaped by elemental magic, political conflict, war, and competing ideas about power. The series balances serialized stakes with standalone adventures and gives its ensemble room to grow. Its themes—identity, accountability, friendship, and the responsibilities of leadership—make it effective for younger viewers and adults alike.
19. Arcane — Best animated fantasy drama
Arcane is a visually ambitious drama about divided sisters, class conflict, technology, and political power. Its animation is a major attraction, but the emotional center is the way social systems and personal loyalties pull its characters apart. You do not need prior knowledge of the game world associated with it to follow the story. Watch it when you want animation with the scale, moral complexity, and dramatic weight of prestige television.

20. Love, Death + Robots — Best short-form genre watch
This anthology delivers compact animated stories across science fiction, horror, fantasy, satire, and experimental visual storytelling. Episodes differ in length, style, tone, and ambition, which makes it easy to watch one between longer commitments. Some installments are graphic or disturbing, so it is worth checking the episode premise before watching with children. It is the strongest choice here for viewers who want imaginative ideas without a season-long narrative.
Comedy, romance, and coming-of-age
21. Beef — Best dark comedy
A road-rage incident between two strangers becomes the outlet for resentment, loneliness, class anxiety, pride, and self-destruction in Beef. The show is funny, but its comedy grows increasingly uncomfortable as a petty conflict exposes deeper dissatisfaction. It is a strong recommendation for viewers who like character-driven stories in which bad decisions are both absurd and psychologically understandable.
22. Derry Girls — Best fast sitcom
Set during the Northern Ireland conflict, Derry Girls follows a group of teenagers whose ordinary concerns—friendship, school, romance, embarrassment—continue despite the political reality around them. Its humor is rapid and affectionate rather than detached from its setting. The result is a warm ensemble comedy about adolescence, family, and loyalty that rewards viewers who enjoy dense dialogue and memorable supporting characters.
23. Brooklyn Nine-Nine — Best accessible workplace comedy
Brooklyn Nine-Nine mixes workplace camaraderie, procedural parody, romantic storylines, and a large ensemble with strong comic chemistry. Its episodes are easy to sample, while recurring relationships give long-term viewers reasons to continue. It is a reliable choice for a group watch because the tone is usually light, the episode library is substantial, and the show can work as either background comfort viewing or a more attentive sitcom binge.

Seinfeld builds comedy from social rules, petty disputes, misunderstandings, and the selfish impulses people try to disguise as principle. Its compact episodes and tightly linked storylines make it easy to dip into, while its influence can be seen across later sitcoms. The characters are not designed to teach lessons or become conventionally heroic; the pleasure comes from watching small grievances spiral into elaborate comic consequences.
25. Arrested Development — Best intricate sitcom
This dysfunctional-family comedy rewards attention. Narration jokes, visual callbacks, running gags, and escalating misunderstandings often pay off several episodes after they begin. The Bluth family’s inability to learn from its mistakes gives the show its particular comic engine. Choose it when you want dense writing and are happy to rewatch episodes to catch details that passed too quickly the first time.
26. The Great British Baking Show — Best comfort competition
The Great British Baking Show turns baking into unusually gentle competition. The appeal comes from the contestants’ personalities, the practical craft of each challenge, constructive judging, and the warm relationships that form inside the tent. It is a refreshing option when you want suspense without cruelty or humiliation. The format makes it easy to watch casually, but the techniques and time limits provide enough detail for viewers who enjoy the competition itself.
27. Bridgerton — Best glossy period romance
Bridgerton gives the period romance a contemporary energy through its music, pacing, production design, family drama, and rotating ensemble of romantic leads. Its appeal is less historical realism than heightened emotion, social maneuvering, glamour, and the pressure of public reputation. Choose it for adult romance with elaborate settings and continuing family storylines.

Sex Education uses an unusually open discussion of intimacy to explore shame, friendship, identity, family, and emotional growth. Beneath the jokes, the series is interested in how people learn to communicate and how difficult it can be to separate self-worth from other people’s judgment. It is candid and sometimes explicit, making it better suited to mature teens and adults than to children.

29. Heartstopper — Best young-adult romance
Heartstopper centers queer joy, friendship, self-acceptance, and supportive relationships while allowing its characters to deal with fear and uncertainty. Its gentleness is a deliberate strength: the show offers romance without treating suffering as the only proof that a relationship matters. It is the best pick on this list for a tender young-adult love story with an affirming emotional center.
30. Never Have I Ever — Best teen comedy-drama
Grief, ambition, family expectations, friendship, and romantic confusion collide in Never Have I Ever. Its fast pace and comic voice keep the story energetic, while its treatment of loss and family pressure gives the protagonist’s mistakes more weight than a standard teen comedy might. Watch it when you want a lively coming-of-age series that can move quickly between embarrassment, romance, and genuine emotional conflict.
31. Anne with an E — Best imaginative period coming-of-age drama
This adaptation of Anne of Green Gables emphasizes imagination, belonging, social injustice, and the emotional life of an orphaned girl. Its visual richness and expansive approach give the familiar story a stronger focus on exclusion and the society surrounding its young protagonist. It is a good fit for viewers who want a heartfelt period drama with both lyrical beauty and serious social themes.
32. Outlander — Best sweeping time-travel romance
Outlander combines time travel, historical adventure, political conflict, family separation, and melodrama in a long-form romance. Its central premise places a modern woman in a radically different historical environment, allowing the series to explore both romance and the danger of being out of place. The show includes mature content and periods of substantial violence, so its romantic label should not be mistaken for a light watch.
International and Korean series
33. Extraordinary Attorney Woo — Best warm legal drama
This Korean legal drama follows an autistic attorney navigating cases, workplace expectations, family history, and relationships. The courtroom stories provide a clear weekly structure, while the character drama asks how institutions respond to someone whose ways of communicating and solving problems do not fit every workplace norm. Its tone is warm and accessible, though viewers should approach any single television portrayal as one fictional character rather than a complete representation of autism.
34. The Glory — Best controlled revenge drama
The Glory follows a woman who methodically confronts former school abusers after years of planning. Its deliberate pacing treats revenge as a process of strategy, evidence, manipulation, and emotional endurance rather than a sequence of simple triumphs. The subject matter is severe, particularly its depictions of bullying and trauma. Choose it when you want a controlled, psychologically intense revenge story rather than a breezy thriller.
35. The Queen’s Gambit — Best limited series
This visually elegant limited series traces a chess prodigy’s talent, addiction, loneliness, relationships, and search for self-mastery. Chess is presented as both an intellectual discipline and a language for control, competition, and connection. The compact story makes it an excellent weekend watch, while the period design and focused performance give it the polish of a major feature stretched across several chapters.
36. Call the Midwife — Best historical ensemble drama
Call the Midwife combines medical stories, social history, community life, and changing attitudes toward women and families. Its episodic structure makes room for individual births and medical dilemmas, but the broader value comes from showing how healthcare, poverty, religion, gender, and public policy affect everyday lives. It is a strong choice for viewers who want historical drama grounded in community rather than royal courts or battlefields.

37. Love Is Blind — Best dating experiment
Love Is Blind gets its momentum from accelerated emotional commitments and the contrast between private connection and public choice. Participants make consequential decisions before meeting face-to-face, then confront the practical pressure of family, attraction, communication, and expectations. It is most entertaining when treated as a social experiment in decision-making and self-presentation rather than as a straightforward test of whether romance can ignore appearance.
38. The Circle — Best social-strategy reality show
In The Circle, contestants communicate through profiles rather than meeting face-to-face, turning identity, popularity, alliances, and trust into the central mechanics of the competition. The format creates a distinctive question: how much of a person’s social influence comes from direct presence, and how much comes from the story they construct? Choose it for strategy, interpersonal maneuvering, and the tension between authenticity and performance.
39. Physical: 100 — Best physical competition
This Korean competition series assembles a broad group of athletes and tests strength, endurance, agility, and strategy. The premise is simple, but the challenges reveal different kinds of physical ability rather than treating one body type or sport as the universal standard. It is a compelling choice for viewers who enjoy competition mechanics, dramatic eliminations, and an ensemble whose alliances matter alongside athletic performance.
40. Queer Eye — Best personal-transformation series
Queer Eye is a makeover and lifestyle format centered on confidence, community, practical change, and emotional support. The clothing, grooming, design, food, and culture elements are visible, but the deeper structure is about giving people tools and encouragement to make a change they already want. It is an easy recommendation when you want reality television that aims for empathy rather than humiliation.
41. Somebody Feed Phil — Best travel-food comfort watch
Phil Rosenthal’s enthusiasm drives this upbeat travel-food series. Each episode combines local restaurants, personal stories, and a host willing to approach unfamiliar places with curiosity rather than expertise. It is less a technical food program than a celebration of eating as a way to meet people and understand a place. Pick it for relaxed viewing when you want travel, food, and uncomplicated good humor.
42. Our Planet — Best nature documentary
Our Planet offers large-scale natural-history filmmaking focused on ecosystems, wildlife, and environmental pressures. Its visual spectacle is matched by an emphasis on interconnection: changes in one habitat can affect entire chains of life. It works both as an immersive documentary watch and as an accessible introduction to environmental storytelling. Viewers sensitive to predation may want to preview episodes before watching with young children.

43. Explained — Best concise explainer series
Explained provides accessible introductions to topics spanning culture, science, economics, politics, and society. Its short episodes are useful when you want a structured starting point rather than a comprehensive course. The format necessarily simplifies complicated subjects, so treat an episode as an invitation to investigate further, not as the final word. It is ideal for curious viewers who want an informative watch in manageable installments.
44. Chef’s Table — Best food documentary
Chef’s Table profiles chefs through their creative philosophies, biographies, signature cuisines, and relationships with place and tradition. The series is highly visual, making the act of cooking feel cinematic, but its most interesting episodes are really about creative identity and the costs of pursuing an uncompromising vision. It is a strong pick for viewers who want food television with the pacing and polish of a character documentary.
Anime and animation
45. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba — Best anime gateway
Demon Slayer combines family loss, sword combat, supernatural horror, humor, and a clear heroic quest. Its visual presentation makes the action immediately legible and gives major battles a strong emotional charge. The story’s straightforward motivation and memorable ensemble make it one of the easiest entry points for someone new to anime, while its escalating mythology offers more for experienced viewers.
46. Jujutsu Kaisen — Best dark supernatural action series
Jujutsu Kaisen offers inventive combat, a large cast, supernatural danger, and a strong balance between humor and darkness. The series can be playful one moment and genuinely threatening the next, with battles shaped by distinctive abilities rather than simple strength contests. It is the better choice than Demon Slayer for viewers who want a more volatile ensemble and a darker supernatural atmosphere.
47. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood — Best complete fantasy adventure
Two brothers pursue a way to restore what they lost, becoming entangled in militarism, sacrifice, science, politics, and the consequences of treating human life as a problem to solve. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is unusually satisfying as a complete fantasy adventure: its early mysteries develop into a coherent larger conflict, and its emotional stakes remain tied to the brothers’ original mistake. It is a strong starting point for viewers who want action with substantial ethical and political themes.

VINLAND SAGA begins with revenge-driven action and gradually becomes a more searching examination of violence, slavery, purpose, and pacifism. That evolution is central to its identity; viewers expecting only continuous battles may be surprised by how much the series values reflection and moral change. Choose it for an ambitious historical anime that asks what it means to build a life after violence has shaped your identity.
49. BoJack Horseman — Best adult animated tragicomedy
BoJack Horseman uses animation to tell a difficult story about addiction, fame, depression, responsibility, and the possibility—or difficulty—of change. Its Hollywood satire is often funny, but the series is most powerful when it examines how self-awareness can coexist with repeated harm. It is not light comfort viewing despite its cartoon form. Choose it for complex adult storytelling that is willing to make its central character accountable without simplifying him.
50. Big Mouth — Best raunchy coming-of-age animation
Big Mouth approaches puberty, embarrassment, friendship, sexuality, and adolescent self-image with intentionally explicit humor and surreal personifications of hormonal confusion. Its broad jokes are not for everyone, but the show’s willingness to make awkwardness visible can be cathartic for adult viewers remembering how strange adolescence felt. This is mature animation, not children’s programming, and it is best chosen when crude comedy is part of the appeal.

Are all 50 shows Netflix originals?
No. This list combines Netflix-produced series with licensed programming. Netflix’s U.S. catalog includes both, and the fact that a show appears on Netflix does not mean Netflix made or owns it.
What is the best Netflix show to start with?
Start with Breaking Bad if you want the broadest all-around recommendation. Choose Derry Girls for comedy, Dark for a demanding mystery, The Queen’s Gambit for a limited series, or Our Planet for documentary viewing.
What is the best short Netflix show to watch?
The Queen’s Gambit is the best compact dramatic binge, while Love, Death + Robots, Black Mirror, and Explained are better if you want self-contained episodes or short viewing sessions.
Are these shows available everywhere Netflix operates?
Not necessarily. This guide is aimed at the U.S. catalog. Netflix’s rights differ by country and can change over time, so use the search function in your local Netflix app to confirm availability.

Which show is best for viewers who do not want violence?
Try The Great British Baking Show, Somebody Feed Phil, Queer Eye, or Heartstopper. Our Planet is also a strong choice, although nature documentaries can include predation and other difficult scenes.
The Bottom Line
Start with Breaking Bad for the best all-around binge. If that is not your mood, use the viewer-based picks: Dark for mystery, The Queen’s Gambit for a limited series, Derry Girls for comedy, Squid Game for international suspense, The Great British Baking Show for comfort, and Our Planet for documentary viewing.
