Sauron now changes tactics. Instead of presenting himself as the apparently repentant Halbrand, he adopts the identity Annatar and presents himself as an emissary of the gods. His target is Celebrimbor, the master smith of Eregion. By influencing Celebrimbor, Sauron hopes to guide the creation of additional Rings and ultimately use them to bind the peoples of Middle-earth to his will. Amazon’s official Season 2 material describes this relationship as the season’s central dramatic engine.
That premise gives the season a clearer thematic focus than a simple contest between heroes and a visible dark lord. The important questions are about persuasion and ambition: Can a damaged world be healed through an object of immense power? What compromises are acceptable when the proposed solution seems beautiful or necessary? And who benefits when one person controls the process?
The story expands across several regions at once. Eregion becomes the focal point of the Ring-forging plot and the site of the Siege of Eregion, a major Second Age battle tied to the war against Sauron. Khazad-dûm faces darkness and political pressure. Lindon remains central to the Elves’ response, while Númenor’s internal politics become increasingly important to the larger conflict. Farther east, the Stranger and Nori travel toward Rhûn, taking the series beyond the geography established in its first season.
This wider map is both a strength and a continuing challenge. The Eregion material gives Season 2 a strong spine, but the show still asks viewers to move between several cultures, political crises, and character groups. That makes the season feel more purposeful than a single-location fantasy drama, while also preserving some of the pacing and focus problems associated with Season 1.
Key characters and locations
Sauron and Annatar
Charlie Vickers plays Sauron, who uses the Annatar identity to approach Celebrimbor. His Season 2 strategy depends on influence rather than open conquest. The performance and premise work best when the danger comes from Sauron’s ability to make domination sound like cooperation and to make ambition appear noble.
Celebrimbor and Eregion
Charles Edwards returns as Celebrimbor, whose skill, reputation, and desire to accomplish something lasting make him vulnerable to Sauron’s manipulation. Eregion is the Elven realm where the Ring-making storyline gathers force. Its importance is not merely visual: it is where craft, politics, trust, and military danger collide.
Galadriel, Elrond and Gil-galad
Morfydd Clark returns as Galadriel, Robert Aramayo as Elrond, and Benjamin Walker as High King Gil-galad. The three represent different responses to the growing threat and to the use of the Rings. Galadriel carries the consequences of her earlier choices, Elrond approaches the new danger with suspicion, and Gil-galad must consider the survival of the Elves as a political and strategic problem.

Khazad-dûm and Prince Durin IV
Owain Arthur returns as Prince Durin IV. Khazad-dûm’s storyline brings the consequences of power into the Dwarven kingdom, where darkness and political pressure threaten more than individual relationships. It also gives the season a second way to examine the cost of trying to solve a crisis through increasingly consequential forces.
Númenor
Cynthia Addai-Robinson returns as Míriel, and Maxim Baldry as Isildur. Númenor’s politics connect the immediate events of the series with one of the most important civilizations of the Second Age. The show is using Tolkien’s established background for Númenor, but its specific political developments and connective plotting belong to this television adaptation.
The Stranger, Nori and Rhûn
Daniel Weyman returns as the Stranger. He and Nori travel east toward Rhûn, opening a storyline built around lands and cultures beyond the show’s earlier map. This is one of Season 2’s largest geographic expansions and a deliberate attempt to make Middle-earth feel broader than the familiar western locations.
Arondir and the wider ensemble
Ismael Cruz Córdova returns as Arondir, alongside the season’s continuing ensemble. The series keeps several character paths in motion outside the main Eregion conflict, including the human, Elven, Dwarven, Númenórean, and eastern storylines. That ensemble scale is central to the show’s identity, even when it makes the narrative less immediately streamlined.
Tom Bombadil
Rory Kinnear plays Tom Bombadil, marking the character’s first live-action appearance. Season 2 also includes creatures such as Barrow-wights, a Hill-troll, and a returning sea creature. These additions broaden the show’s sense of the legendary and uncanny, rather than limiting the season to court politics and battlefield strategy.

How Season 2 fits Tolkien’s Second Age
The series takes place thousands of years before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Its broad framework comes from Tolkien’s Second Age: the rise of evil, the forging of the Rings, the development of Middle-earth’s kingdoms, the importance of Númenor, and the eventual threat posed by Sauron.

It is important to describe the adaptation accurately. Season 2 is not a scene-by-scene version of The Silmarillion or Unfinished Tales, nor is it based on a single novel with a complete episode-by-episode plot. The writers have created connective television storytelling to bring together events, characters, and places that are treated separately or only briefly in Tolkien’s writings.
Amazon has said that actors consulted lesser-known Tolkien material, including Unfinished Tales and Tolkien’s letters, while researching their characters. That demonstrates the influence of those texts; it does not mean that every event in Season 2 appears in one of them.
Númenor illustrates the distinction particularly well. Tolkien’s background describes it as an island kingdom granted to Men who were faithful during the great conflict and later deceived by Sauron. That history explains why Númenórean politics matter in the show’s larger Second Age structure. The series’ specific chronology, relationships, and transitions between major events are its own adaptation choices. The Tolkien Estate’s background on The Silmarillion and Númenor is useful for separating that underlying lore from the show’s original plotting.
Do you need to watch the films or read the books first?
No. Amazon says viewers can understand the series without having watched Peter Jackson’s films or read Tolkien’s books. Familiarity with the source material may make references and historical echoes more meaningful, but it is not a prerequisite.
Season 1 is different. Watching it first is the practical recommendation because Season 2 assumes that viewers know:
- Halbrand’s true identity as Sauron;
- why the Three Elven Rings were forged;
- how Mordor entered the story;
- why Galadriel, Elrond, Celebrimbor, and the other central characters distrust or rely on one another; and
- how the major kingdoms reached their position at the end of the first season.
If you have already seen Season 1 but need a refresher, the essential preparation is its final revelation and the consequences surrounding the Three Rings. You do not need to complete a full Tolkien reading order to follow Season 2.
Season 2 spoilers: the major developments
Stop here if you want a completely spoiler-free introduction. The Annatar premise was disclosed in Amazon’s pre-release material, but the developments below concern the season’s main conflicts and set pieces.

- Tom Bombadil enters live action. His appearance is a notable adaptation choice, accompanied by other creatures that make the world feel older and stranger than the political story alone would suggest.
These developments are best understood as parts of one question: can the peoples of Middle-earth use power without allowing power to use them? The answer is complicated because the Rings are presented not only as weapons, but also as possible instruments of preservation and healing. That ambiguity is where the season’s strongest drama lies.
Reception: stronger with critics than with audiences
Season 2 received broadly favorable but qualified critical attention. The Rotten Tomatoes first-review roundup described it as darker, bolder, and more complex, while also highlighting performances from Morfydd Clark and Robert Aramayo. A contemporary Radio Times review similarly regarded the central narrative as tighter while noting that some of the difficulties associated with Season 1 remained.
In the Rotten Tomatoes snapshot used for this guide, Season 2 stood at 84% from 172 critics and 58% from more than 5,000 audience ratings. Those figures are not permanent measurements: aggregator scores change as more reviews and ratings arrive. The difference also should not be reduced to a simple verdict about quality. Audience scores can be affected by who participates, changing levels of interest, and review-bombing controversies, so they are best treated as one indicator of reception rather than an objective measurement.
The fairest summary is neither that Season 2 was universally acclaimed nor that it was a critical failure. Critics generally responded to its darker tone, more coherent central conflict, performances, and increased complexity, while reservations remained around pacing, the number of simultaneous storylines, and the effectiveness of individual arcs.
For viewers who found Season 1 too diffuse, Season 2’s Sauron-and-Celebrimbor storyline offers the clearest reason to continue. For viewers who disliked the series’ expansive structure or its adaptation choices, the season does not abandon those characteristics; it concentrates them around a more consequential conflict.

Season 2 was filmed in the United Kingdom, unlike Season 1, which was filmed in New Zealand. The production expanded its sets and locations, including material for Rhûn filmed in the Canary Islands and additional construction for Khazad-dûm.
The season’s directors were Charlotte Brändström, Sanaa Hamri, and Louise Hooper. Amazon said Brändström directed four episodes and also served as a co-executive producer. The distribution of directing duties allowed the season to move between large-scale action, political drama, intimate character scenes, and the more mythic eastern material while retaining a unified production identity.
