Their daughter, Sterling Sol Vesia, later died on October 26, 2025, the couple announced publicly on November 7.
The Dodgers did not disclose the nature of the emergency when Vesia left the club. That decision gave the family privacy during an unimaginable loss—and prompted a response from the Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays that made clear the situation was about far more than a roster or a championship.
What happened to Alex Vesia before the 2025 World Series?
On October 23, 2025, the Dodgers announced that Vesia was away from the team while he and Kayla navigated what the club called a “deeply personal family matter.” The organization said it would provide an update later but did not initially offer further details.
Vesia, a left-handed Dodgers relief pitcher who wears No. 51, was not included on Los Angeles’ World Series roster. The 2025 World Series began on October 24, with the Dodgers facing the Toronto Blue Jays.

At that stage, the public knew only that Vesia had left the team for a serious family matter. Neither the Dodgers nor responsible coverage had a basis to speculate about the circumstances, and the family’s privacy was appropriately respected.
The family later announced the death of their newborn daughter
On November 7, Alex and Kayla Vesia announced that their newborn daughter, Sterling Sol Vesia, had died on October 26, 2025. MLB reported the announcement on November 8.
In their public statement, the couple described the pain of losing their daughter and thanked the Dodgers for their understanding and support. They also expressed gratitude to medical personnel who had cared for them. The family did not publicly establish a medical cause of death, and none should be inferred.
Sterling’s name and date of death are included here because they were publicly shared by her parents. Details about medical treatment, private circumstances, or a possible cause of death remain private.

Why the Dodgers called it “so much bigger than baseball”
For the Dodgers, Vesia’s absence was never treated simply as a bullpen change or a World Series roster decision. Team president Andrew Friedman described the situation as “so much bigger than baseball.” Manager Dave Roberts and Dodgers players also publicly expressed support for Vesia and Kayla.
That response mattered because it placed the family’s needs ahead of the club’s immediate competitive demands. Vesia was absent during one of the most important stretches of the baseball calendar, but the organization did not publicly pressure him to return or turn the family emergency into a sports storyline.
The support extended beyond Los Angeles. During the World Series, several Dodgers relievers and Toronto Blue Jays players wore Vesia’s No. 51 on their caps as a gesture of solidarity. The tribute did not erase the family’s loss, but it showed how players from both teams recognized that a teammate and fellow baseball professional was facing something more important than the series itself.

Vesia later returned to public baseball activity, including his appearance during the Dodgers’ Healthcare Appreciation Night. The event connected his professional return with an expression of thanks to the Cedars-Sinai staff who had helped the family.

That return should not be mistaken for evidence that the family had “moved on” or completed a recovery. The public record supports a more limited conclusion: Alex and Kayla continued to grieve, sought counseling, remained grateful for the people who supported them, and Vesia resumed participating with the Dodgers.
As of the latest indexed 2026 MLB player-page update in the supplied reporting, Vesia was listed as active and credited with 38 appearances, a 2.51 ERA, 28.2 innings, and 40 strikeouts. Those figures are season-to-date statistics and can change; they should be checked against MLB’s current player page before publication or republication.
The role of the medical staff
The Vesias’ decision to invite Cedars-Sinai staff to Dodger Stadium offered a more personal continuation of the support story. Rather than limiting their public thanks to the baseball organization, the couple recognized the healthcare workers who had been present during the family’s loss.
Healthcare Appreciation Night therefore carried significance beyond a ceremonial first pitch or an acknowledgment during a game. It gave Alex and Kayla an opportunity to honor people they had publicly identified as part of the support they received, while allowing the Dodgers community to recognize them alongside the family.

What is confirmed—and what is not
- Confirmed: Vesia stepped away from the Dodgers before the 2025 World Series.
- Confirmed: The Dodgers initially described the reason as a deeply personal family matter.
- Confirmed: Alex and Kayla publicly announced that their newborn daughter, Sterling Sol Vesia, died on October 26, 2025.
- Confirmed: Vesia was not on the Dodgers’ World Series roster.
- Confirmed: Dodgers and Blue Jays players honored him by wearing No. 51 on their caps.
- Confirmed: Vesia later spoke publicly about the support he and Kayla received, and the couple invited Cedars-Sinai staff to a Dodgers game.
- Not established publicly: The cause of Sterling’s death, private medical details, or any interpretation of the family’s grief.
The distinction is important. A family’s decision to share a loss does not make every surrounding detail public, and a player’s return to work does not provide a reliable measure of how he or his spouse is coping.
Why this story is bigger than a roster decision
Vesia’s absence happened at a moment when baseball coverage normally focuses on pitching availability, playoff strategy, and roster construction. But the story’s central fact was not whether the Dodgers had lost a reliever. It was whether a family facing the death of a newborn child would be given room to grieve.
The Dodgers’ public support, the No. 51 tribute from players on both World Series teams, Vesia’s later gratitude, and the Vesias’ recognition of Cedars-Sinai staff all point to the same broader lesson: professional institutions can support people without demanding that a private tragedy become public property.

Alex Vesia’s absence before the 2025 World Series began as a private family emergency and was later understood as the loss of his newborn daughter, Sterling Sol Vesia. The Dodgers, Blue Jays players, Vesia’s teammates, and Cedars-Sinai staff supported the family while respecting the limits of what Alex and Kayla chose to share. The story is bigger than baseball because the central issue was not a roster—it was giving a grieving family compassion, privacy, and time.
