The Boy and the Heron is a richly ambiguous, original Hayao Miyazaki fantasy about a boy grieving his mother during wartime. It is not a documentary, but its searching engagement with death, memory, and artistic creation makes it essential viewing for audiences drawn to serious cinema.

The Boy and the Heron is a 124-minute, hand-drawn Studio Ghibli fantasy—not a documentary—but it is especially rewarding for viewers interested in films about memory, war, bereavement, artistic inheritance, and the making of a life after loss. Hayao Miyazaki wrote and directed this original 2023 film, which follows a grieving boy into a strange realm where the living and the dead overlap. It is emotionally demanding, visually extraordinary, and deliberately resistant to one neat explanation.

What it is—and what it is not

The film’s Japanese title is 君たちはどう生きるか (Kimitachi wa Dō Ikiru ka). Its English title is The Boy and the Heron. Miyazaki is credited as original creator, screenwriter, and director; Toshio Suzuki produced; and Joe Hisaishi composed the score.

Although the Japanese title was borrowed from Genzaburo Yoshino’s 1937 children’s novel, this is not an adaptation of that book. Studio Ghibli describes the film itself as a completely original Miyazaki work. That distinction matters: viewers should not expect a faithful film version of Yoshino’s story or use the novel as a plot guide.

Spoiler-light story

During wartime, Mahito Maki loses his mother and moves with his father to a country estate. His father’s new wife, Natsuko, becomes part of the household, but Mahito remains isolated and angry. When Natsuko disappears, a gray heron lures Mahito toward an ancient tower. Crossing its threshold takes him into a fantastical world shared by the living and the dead, where his search becomes both a rescue mission and a confrontation with his own grief.

The film gives Mahito a clear emotional starting point but does not explain its fantasy world in the tidy, rule-by-rule way of a conventional adventure. Let the images, shifts in tone, and repeated encounters accumulate. Some questions are meant to remain open.

Why the film can feel difficult

The Boy and the Heron is often described as a semi-autobiographical fantasy about life, death, and creation. That is useful framing, not a decoder ring. It supports reading the film in relation to Miyazaki’s recurring concerns—childhood under war, damaged adults, nature, inheritance, and art—but it does not establish a single correct meaning for every character or image.

Its central difficulty is also its strength: the film asks the viewer to move with Mahito through grief before it supplies certainty. Scenes can be comic, menacing, mournful, and beautiful in quick succession. Rather than treating that tonal movement as a flaw to solve, it is better understood as part of the journey’s unstable emotional terrain.

A viewing guide

  • Watch for Mahito’s choices, not only the lore. The fantasy setting is important, but the dramatic question is what kind of person Mahito is becoming.
  • Notice the wartime setting. The early loss and family upheaval are inseparable from the story’s historical atmosphere.
  • Do not rush to symbol charts. A heron, tower, fire, birds, or stones may invite interpretation, but the film does not require a fixed one-to-one answer.
  • Give the ending room. The film’s resolution is more emotionally and ethically direct than its imagery may initially suggest.

Japanese and English-language versions

The Japanese voice cast includes Soma Santoki as Mahito and Masaki Suda as the Gray Heron. North American audiences were offered both the original Japanese-language version with English subtitles and a separate English-language version. The English dub cast includes Luca Padovan as Mahito and Robert Pattinson as the Gray Heron, with Christian Bale as Shoichi Maki, Gemma Chan as Natsuko, Karen Fukuhara as Lady Himi, Florence Pugh as Kiriko, Mark Hamill as Granduncle, Dave Bautista as the Parakeet King, Willem Dafoe as Noble Pelican, and Mamoudou Athie, Tony Revolori, and Dan Stevens among the parakeet voices.

Neither track is merely a fallback. Choose subtitles if you prefer the original Japanese performances and are comfortable reading during dense visual sequences; choose the dub if you want to stay focused on the animation and listen to the English cast. Joe Hisaishi’s score is central in either version. Kenshi Yonezu wrote and performed the theme song, “Spinning Globe.”

Who should watch it

Watch The Boy and the Heron if you value visually authored cinema, can accept ambiguity, or are interested in an intimate story of loss shaped into a large-scale fantasy. It may be less satisfying if you want a fast, plot-first family adventure with every world-building question answered aloud. Its PG-13 rating and its treatment of death, war, threat, and distressing imagery are worth considering for younger or sensitive viewers.
