Scarlett Pomers did not disappear from Reba because of a secret scandal or a fatal illness. The actor, who played Kyra Hart, stepped away from the sitcom while receiving treatment for anorexia nervosa. Her absence was most visible during the show’s fifth season, and she later returned for its final season.
What makes Pomers’s story difficult is also what makes it important: she was a teenager dealing with a serious mental illness in public, while a successful television career continued around her. Her own interviews describe a gradual crisis, family intervention, treatment, recovery, and an eventual decision to build a life beyond regular acting.
Who Scarlett Pomers played on Reba
Pomers joined Reba as Kyra Hart, the daughter of Reba Hart, played by Reba McEntire. Kyra was part of the show’s central family, alongside her siblings and stepfamily. The sitcom ran for six seasons, first on The WB and later on The CW.
Pomers was still a teenager when her health problems began. In a January 2006 CNN interview, she said the issue started around Christmas 2004. What began as an attempt to lose “a few pounds” developed into anorexia nervosa, with stress, perfectionism, relationships, and a desire to feel in control all contributing to the problem.

Eating and exercise became matters she felt compelled to hide, and recognizing that secrecy became part of the turning point in seeking help.
Why Scarlett Pomers left Reba
Pomers entered treatment after her family intervened. She said in the CNN interview that her lowest weight had been 73 pounds. ABC News reported in 2007 that the 16-year-old actor had been asked to leave Reba temporarily so she could get help for anorexia.
The show did not write Kyra out with a major dramatic storyline. Instead, her reduced presence became apparent across the fifth season. Episode records list Pomers in only two of that season’s 22 episodes, which aired from September 2005 through May 2006.
That distinction matters. Public accounts establish that Pomers left the production to receive treatment, but they do not justify casually describing the situation as a specific kind of hospitalization. “Treatment” is the accurate, supportable description.

Her return to the series
Pomers eventually returned to Reba for its sixth and final season. Her return showed that the treatment absence was not necessarily the end of her acting career, even though her relationship with the industry changed over time.
The series ended in 2007. Pomers remained associated with the role of Kyra Hart, but she gradually moved away from acting rather than pursuing another long-running television career.
Recovery was not presented as a simple ending
Pomers spoke about anorexia as a mental illness, not merely a dieting problem. She also described recovery as an ongoing process rather than a permanent switch that could simply be turned on once treatment ended.
In 2006, she used her public profile to support eating-disorder awareness. She worked with the National Eating Disorders Association and released Project Chains, a CD whose proceeds benefited the organization. She also worked with her charity, Arch Angels, which raised money to help people obtain eating-disorder treatment.

Those efforts gave her story a second dimension. Pomers was no longer only answering questions about why she had missed episodes of a sitcom; she was trying to make treatment more accessible and to challenge the secrecy surrounding eating disorders.
What she did after acting
In an interview originally published in 2014 and republished by StarTrek.com in 2019, Pomers said she no longer acted regularly. She described making a living as a jewelry designer and photographer, with photography focused largely on fashion, bands’ promotional images, and some concert work. She also said she played music mainly for herself.
In that interview, Pomers said she was probably the healthiest she had ever been and that speaking openly about her experience had enabled her to help others with eating disorders.
The interview is the strongest direct account located for her later life, but it is not a current 2026 biography. Claims about her present-day work or health should therefore be dated rather than stated as confirmed current facts.

What the “tragic truth” framing gets wrong
The phrase suggests a death or a hidden catastrophe. That is not what the documented record shows. Pomers experienced a severe illness, required treatment, missed much of a season of Reba, and later described recovery and advocacy.
It is also misleading to reduce the illness to “Hollywood pressure.” Pomers identified a combination of factors, including high expectations, stress, personal relationships, and a need for control. No single cause was established in the interviews.
Finally, the condition should be identified correctly. The available contemporaneous reporting and Pomers’s own statements describe anorexia nervosa, not bulimia. Precision matters, particularly when discussing an illness that is often misunderstood and surrounded by harmful stereotypes.
A concise timeline
| Period | What happened |

| 2005–2006 | She received treatment and was largely absent from the fifth season of Reba. |
| January 2006 | In a CNN interview, she discussed anorexia, family intervention, and her reported low weight of 73 pounds. |
| April 2006 | Project Chains was released with proceeds benefiting the National Eating Disorders Association. |
| 2006–2007 | She returned to Reba for its sixth and final season and continued public advocacy. |
| 2014 interview, republished 2019 | She described life outside acting, including jewelry design, photography, music, and ongoing recovery. |
Why the story still matters
Pomers’s experience illustrates how an eating disorder can affect a young person even when that person appears successful, employed, and surrounded by support. It also shows why a performer’s absence should not automatically be treated as entertainment gossip.

The documented story is serious without needing a sensational ending: a teenage actor became dangerously ill, accepted treatment, returned to work, and later used her experience to support others. The tragedy was the illness itself—not a mysterious disappearance or an invented outcome.

Scarlett Pomers’s difficult period on Reba was connected to anorexia nervosa and treatment, not a death or unexplained disappearance.
