Romance anime is much broader than school comedy. The best examples use love to examine grief, family, ambition, social prejudice, identity, adulthood, and the fear of being truly known. This ranking weighs the credibility of the central relationship, character development, emotional payoff, direction, music, influence, and whether the anime offers a satisfying experience on its own.
Television series, films, shōjo, seinen, josei, yuri, boys’ love, fantasy, romantic comedy, and serious relationship drama are all included. The order is editorial rather than an objective database score. Several entries are incomplete adaptations, and those limitations matter.
20. The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity
Format: Television series; 2025
CloverWorks’ gentle romance follows students from two neighboring schools divided by class prejudice. Rintaro and Kaoruko’s relationship is appealing because it does not treat social hostility as a decorative obstacle. Their growing trust challenges the assumptions made by both communities.
Its place on an all-time list is provisional. The series is too new to have the longevity of older classics, but its empathetic writing and unusually clear emotional focus make it one of the strongest recent additions to the genre. It won Crunchyroll’s 2026 Best Romance award, although that award recognizes eligible recent anime, not the greatest romance series in history.

19. 5 Centimeters per Second
Format: Animated film; 2007
Makoto Shinkai’s three-part film is about distance, missed opportunities, and the way first love can remain lodged in memory long after a relationship has ended. Its snow-covered landscapes, train journeys, and precise visual compositions turn emotional separation into physical space.
This is not a conventional feel-good romance. Its power comes from refusing to offer an easy reunion or a neatly packaged emotional resolution. The film is best understood as a portrait of romantic memory and the danger of allowing the past to determine the present.
18. Insomniacs After School
Format: 13-episode television series; 2023
Ganta Nakami and Isaki Magari meet while searching for somewhere to sleep at school. Both suffer from insomnia, and their shared use of the abandoned astronomy club room gradually becomes the foundation for a quiet, convincing intimacy.

Its romance feels lived-in rather than engineered around dramatic misunderstandings. The anime does not adapt the manga’s complete story, however, so the television series is only part of the larger narrative.
17. Given
Format: Television series and films; boys’ love music drama
Given connects romance with grief, music, and creative recovery. Mafuyu Sato’s relationship with Ritsuka Uenoyama develops alongside the formation of a band, meaning that performance is not merely background decoration: it is how the characters process feelings they cannot articulate directly.
The series is especially effective when it allows romantic emotion to remain tangled with loss and uncertainty. Mafuyu, Ritsuka, and the other band members all have different relationships with music and intimacy. Because the franchise includes television episodes and films, viewers should check the viewing order rather than treating it as one uninterrupted TV run.

16. Bloom Into You
Format: Television series; yuri romance
Yū Koito does not understand the romantic feelings other people describe, while student-council president Tōko Nanami appears much more certain about what she wants. Their relationship is shaped by this emotional asymmetry, and the series takes that uncertainty seriously instead of treating it as a temporary gimmick.
Bloom Into You is thoughtful about identity, idealization, and the difference between being admired and being known. Its central relationship is unusually attentive to personal boundaries and changing self-understanding. The anime ends before the manga’s complete story, so it should not be presented as a finished adaptation.

15. Wotakoi: Love Is Hard for Otaku
Format: Workplace romantic comedy
Narumi and Hirotaka are office workers who are openly passionate about anime, manga, games, and other hobbies. Their relationship offers a welcome alternative to the usual high-school setting and asks a practical question: what happens when two adults already understand each other’s interests but still have to learn how to date?
The comedy comes from compatibility as much as embarrassment. The characters do not need to hide every aspect of themselves to become attractive, and the series treats shared hobbies as a possible source of intimacy rather than an automatic social liability. The anime does not cover the full manga, so its conclusion is not the complete story.

Format: Television series; 2015
Takeo Gōda is enormous, intimidating, and exceptionally kind. Rinko Yamato is immediately drawn to him, but Takeo assumes that her feelings must be directed toward his more conventionally handsome best friend. The misunderstanding is funny, but the show does not make Takeo’s appearance the entirety of his character.
One of the series’ smartest choices is allowing the couple to get together relatively early. Instead of stretching the story toward a single confession, it explores the excitement, insecurity, and generosity involved in maintaining a relationship.
13. Lovely Complex
Format: Television romantic comedy; 2007
Risa Koizumi is unusually tall and Atsushi Ōtani is unusually short, making them the target of jokes and a popular comedic duo at school. Their height difference becomes a genuine emotional obstacle because both have internalized expectations about what a romantic couple is supposed to look like.
Lovely Complex works because the physical gag develops into a story about self-consciousness, social judgment, friendship, and the fear of being rejected. Risa and Ōtani are loud, flawed, and often ridiculous, but their feelings gradually become more credible than the premise initially suggests.

12. Maison Ikkoku
Format: Television series; began in 1986
College student Yūsaku Godai lives in a boarding house managed by Kyoko Otonashi, a young widow whose grief and guardedness complicate their attraction. Their relationship unfolds over a long period, with the boarding house’s eccentric residents supplying comedy while Godai and Kyoko mature around one another.
This is a foundational romantic comedy with a more adult emotional framework than many later school series. It understands that love can be delayed by grief, poor timing, financial pressure, and personal immaturity. The pacing is considerably slower than modern seasonal anime, but that gradualness is part of its design.
11. Horimiya
Format: Television series
Kyoko Hori is a popular student with a demanding home life, while Izumi Miyamura’s quiet school persona hides a very different private identity. Once they discover each other’s less visible sides, their relationship develops with unusual speed.
Horimiya stands out by moving beyond the confession and showing the couple as an actual couple. It is interested in everyday affection, awkward conversations, changing friendships, and the relief of being accepted without performing a public identity.

10. The Dangers in My Heart
Format: Television series; 2023–2024, with a third season planned for 2027
Kyotaro Ichikawa begins as an isolated middle-school student whose dark fantasies conceal profound insecurity. Anna Yamada, a popular model, gradually becomes more than the distant figure he imagines her to be. Their connection grows through small acts of attention and increasingly honest communication.
The series has an excellent understanding of adolescent awkwardness. Kyotaro’s emotional maturation is not instantaneous, and Yamada is not merely a reward for his improvement. The anime has become one of the genre’s most convincing portrayals of two young people learning how to trust one another. It remains unfinished, so no claim about the anime’s final resolution is possible yet.

9. Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You
Format: Shōjo television series; 2009–2010
Sawako Kuronuma is feared by classmates because her appearance reminds them of a horror-film character. Kazehaya, a popular and approachable student, helps her make friends and challenge the assumptions surrounding her.
The romance develops slowly, but the delay serves the characters. Sawako first has to learn how to communicate and participate in friendships before she can confidently understand her feelings for Kazehaya. The series’ warmth comes from treating friendship, reputation, and romantic love as connected forms of emotional growth. The original television adaptation does not cover the entire manga.
8. Spice and Wolf
Format: Fantasy romance
Traveling merchant Kraft Lawrence meets Holo, a wolf deity who joins him on the road. Their relationship develops through bargaining, teasing, economic schemes, arguments, and gradually earned trust rather than the standard rhythm of school-romance confession scenes.
Holo and Lawrence are compelling because their flirtation is inseparable from negotiation. Each tests the other’s intelligence, conceals vulnerabilities, and learns when cooperation is more valuable than winning. The journey gives the romance room to breathe, while the trade disputes provide a distinctive source of conflict.

7. Your Name.
Format: Animated film; 2016
Makoto Shinkai’s body-swapping romance follows Mitsuha and Taki, two teenagers who begin exchanging lives across distance and time. The premise combines intimate comedy with a larger disaster narrative, and the film’s emotional stakes expand as the characters realize what separates them.

Its visual scale and music are part of the storytelling rather than ornamental extras. Trains, city lights, rural landscapes, and the red thread of connection make longing feel both enormous and intensely personal. It belongs on a romance list as a film, not as a television series with episodic development.
6. Your Lie in April
Format: 22-episode television series; 2014–2015
Pianist Kōsei Arima has stopped hearing music after a traumatic childhood, until the free-spirited violinist Kaori Miyazono pulls him back toward performance. Their relationship is central, but the series is equally concerned with artistic recovery, parental pressure, friendship, and grief.

5. Nana
Format: Television series; 2006
Two women named Nana meet by chance and become roommates, friends, and witnesses to each other’s ambitions and mistakes. One is pursuing a music career; the other is searching for belonging and stability. Their lives become entangled with bands, sex, jealousy, career pressure, and relationships that are often passionate but unhealthy.
Nana earns its place through emotional and adult complexity. It does not reduce love to a force that automatically makes people better. Desire can coexist with selfishness, dependency, betrayal, and fear, while friendship can be just as emotionally important as romance.
Important caveat: the anime does not provide a definitive ending to Ai Yazawa’s larger manga story. It is essential viewing, but incomplete.
4. Clannad: After Story
Format: Television series; sequel to Clannad
Clannad: After Story follows Tomoya Okazaki and Nagisa Furukawa beyond their school years. Its concerns expand from teenage attraction to work, family, responsibility, illness, grief, and parenthood.
Few romance anime take their central couple so decisively into adulthood. The series understands that a relationship is not complete when two people confess; it is tested by ordinary burdens and devastating circumstances. Its emotional effect depends heavily on the groundwork laid by the first Clannad season, so watch Clannad before After Story.

Format: Television series; 2008
Ryūji Takasu and Taiga Aisaka initially cooperate to pursue their respective crushes. The arrangement gradually exposes a deeper bond, as the two discover that their public reputations conceal complicated family lives and emotional needs.
The series is more than an opposites-attract comedy. Its early episodes rely on sharp comic timing and a lively ensemble, while the later story draws energy from unresolved questions about family, identity, dependence, and what it means to choose a future. The romantic payoff works because the characters have changed before they recognize what their relationship has become.

2. Kaguya-sama: Love Is War
Format: Television romantic comedy
Student-council leaders Kaguya Shinomiya and Miyuki Shirogane are in love, but both are too proud to confess first. Each episode turns an ordinary interaction into a tactical contest, complete with an assertive narrator who makes every glance and hesitation feel like a military operation.
The premise could have become repetitive, but the series continually raises both the comedic and emotional stakes. Its absurdity makes the characters’ vulnerability more surprising, while the supporting cast gives the story space to explore loneliness, self-worth, and friendship. The third season, Kaguya-sama: Love Is War -Ultra Romantic-, won Crunchyroll’s 2023 Best Romance award, but the franchise’s ranking here rests on its overall achievement rather than one award.
1. Fruits Basket (2019)
Format: Television series; 2019–2021
The 2019 adaptation of Natsuki Takaya’s manga follows Tohru Honda as she becomes involved with the Sohma family, whose members are bound by a supernatural curse. The romance is inseparable from the series’ larger subjects: trauma, abuse, isolation, family control, forgiveness, and emotional healing.
It ranks first because it combines an unusually deep ensemble with a complete adaptation. Across 63 episodes and three seasons, Fruits Basket (2019) adapts all 23 volumes of the manga and allows its central relationships to develop alongside individual character arcs. Romance does not erase the characters’ problems, nor does it replace their need for personal growth.
The distinction from Fruits Basket (2001) is essential. The 2001 anime is a separate, incomplete adaptation. For this ranking, the 2019 version is the definitive choice because it delivers the full story and its intended emotional resolution.
