The Fantastic Four: First Steps arrives with a difficult job: introduce Marvel’s First Family again while making the team feel distinct from the wider superhero universe. The early critical response is largely encouraging. Reviewers have praised the film’s central performances, its retro-futurist visual identity and its emphasis on family, while still finding weaknesses in a screenplay some considered rushed and villains who do not always match the scale of the premise.

Directed by Matt Shakman, the film opened in U.S. theaters on July 25, 2025. It stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as the Fantastic Four, with Ralph Ineson as Galactus and Julia Garner as the Silver Surfer.

What the first reviews are saying

The broad critical verdict is positive: The Fantastic Four: First Steps is being described as the strongest live-action version of the team so far and one of Marvel Studios’ more controlled recent productions. Rotten Tomatoes’ early-review roundup even used the phrase “firing on all cylinders,” reflecting the sense that the film has a clearer identity than many recent entries in the franchise.

That praise is not universal, but the dividing line is fairly consistent. Critics who responded to the movie connected with its cast, production design and emotional premise. Those less persuaded tended to see a compressed story that moves from one major idea to the next without giving every character or conflict enough room to develop.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps - Blu-ray + Digital
  • Set against the backdrop of a ?60s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel?s First Family faces a daunting challenge. Forced to balance being heroes with their family bond, they must defend Earth from a space god and his enigmatic herald.

The cast is the film’s strongest asset

Pedro Pascal plays Reed Richards as a brilliant scientist whose confidence is tempered by the responsibilities of leadership and fatherhood. Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm has attracted particularly strong notices. Early reviews often treat her as more than the team’s supporting presence: she is a scientist, a partner, a mother and one of the film’s principal emotional anchors.

Joseph Quinn brings a recognizable showman’s energy to Johnny Storm, while Ebon Moss-Bachrach gives Ben Grimm a grounded, human quality beneath the Thing’s rocky exterior. The dynamic among the four leads is frequently singled out as the movie’s greatest success. Their relationships make the team feel like a family before it feels like a superhero unit.

That distinction matters. The film is not built only around individual powers or quips. Its central stakes are connected to the Fantastic Four’s life together and to the pressure placed on that family by forces far beyond Earth. When the movie concentrates on those relationships, reviewers generally found it most effective.

A retro-futurist world with a strong visual signature

First Steps is set on an alternate Earth, identified as Earth-828, and its 1960s-inspired design gives the film a clearly defined setting. The production blends mid-century optimism, space-age technology and comic-book spectacle rather than attempting to reproduce the familiar contemporary MCU look.

Reviewers have praised the sets, costumes and overall visual planning. The result is a world that feels deliberately designed instead of assembled from generic digital locations. Practical sets and visual effects are used together, which helps the film maintain a physical quality even when the story expands into cosmic territory.

Michael Giacchino’s orchestral score is another recurring point of praise. Its scale and period-conscious sound support the film’s sense of adventure without completely overwhelming the family drama. For critics who enjoyed the movie, the score, production design and ensemble performances work together to create a polished, self-contained tone.

Why the screenplay has divided critics

The main criticism is not that First Steps lacks ideas. It is that it may contain too many ideas for its 1-hour, 55-minute running time.

Some reviews describe the screenplay as rushed, chaotic or over-assembled. The film has to establish an alternate universe, introduce four heroes, explain their family structure, present a cosmic threat and deliver a large-scale finale. Critics who found the story thin felt that these elements are sometimes moved through rather than developed.

This also affects the supporting characters and antagonists. Galactus and the Silver Surfer have an imposing visual presence, but their dramatic impact divided reviewers. Some praised the scale of their presentation, while others considered the villains generic or underwritten. The criticism is less about whether they look large enough and more about whether the screenplay gives them enough personality and motivation.

The Thing’s computer-generated appearance was another point of concern for some critics. While the character works emotionally through Ben Grimm’s performance and dialogue, several reviews found the visual effects occasionally unconvincing.

It is not an action-first superhero film

Viewers expecting nonstop destruction may find the film more restrained than its cosmic premise suggests. A number of early reviews noted that First Steps is not especially action-heavy. Its deliberate pacing places more weight on atmosphere, character relationships and the mechanics of its world than on a constant sequence of battles.

  • Set against the backdrop of a ?60s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel?s First Family faces a daunting challenge. Forced to balance being heroes with their family bond, they must defend Earth from a space god and his enigmatic herald.

The Los Angeles Times compared its approach more closely with classic science fiction than with frantic modern superhero spectacle. The Associated Press offered a related assessment, calling it sturdy but somewhat surface-level. Those observations help explain the split in the reviews: the film’s slower, more purposeful rhythm is a strength if its retro science-fiction mood works for you, but a limitation if you want a relentless Marvel action movie.

Does it require MCU homework?

No extensive Marvel catch-up is needed to understand the main story. The film takes place on Earth-828 and functions largely as a standalone introduction to this version of the Fantastic Four. New viewers can follow the characters, their powers and their conflict without working through years of previous films and television series.

However, “standalone” does not mean completely separate from Marvel’s larger plans. The post-credits material indicates that the Fantastic Four will return in Avengers: Doomsday. The accurate expectation, then, is that the movie tells a complete enough story on its own while also establishing a route into Phase 6.

Spoiler note: the preceding paragraph mentions the film’s post-credits direction, but does not discuss the scene’s details.

Current Rotten Tomatoes picture

Rotten Tomatoes currently lists the film at 86% on the Tomatometer from 408 critic reviews and 90% on the Popcornmeter from more than 10,000 verified ratings. Its critics’ consensus highlights the cast chemistry and appealing retro-1960s design, concluding that the film does justice to Marvel’s First Family.

Those figures can change as more audience and critic reviews are added, but they match the early pattern: strong approval for the film’s presentation and ensemble, with reservations about the writing and the balance between story, spectacle and setup.

Do I need to watch other Marvel films before First Steps?

The Bottom Line

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is a positive but qualified step forward for Marvel’s First Family. Its cast chemistry, retro-1960s science-fiction world and emotional focus give it a stronger identity than the earlier live-action adaptations. The trade-off is a screenplay that some reviewers found hurried, a restrained action profile and villains who do not always justify the film’s cosmic scale. The result is less a flawless Marvel triumph than a stylish, well-cast and largely successful reset that works on its own while pointing toward the MCU’s next phase.
