He was part of the Nazi regime yet widely respected by both sides of the conflict, even earning Hitler’s highest praise as “the most dangerous opponent”. Von Manstein was a Prussian officer and renowned military strategist who fought in numerous battles during World War Two and contributed to a great many solutions at the front. He is also known for his involvement in some of the war’s most notorious campaigns, such as The French Campaign and the conquest of Crimea and Sevastopol.
Von Manstein’s career provides an interesting insight into the nature of warfare, with him being regarded by some to be a master tactician with a passion for strategy over brute force. His tactical acumen allowed him to gain a decisive advantage over his opponents, while still maintaining a seemingly unwavering sense of duty and obedience that led him to continue to fight for what he saw as a criminal cause.
