Trois jeunes migrants originaires d’Afrique de l’Ouest, Ouloulou, Baldé et Doucouré, vivent à Valence, en Espagne, depuis un certain temps. Pendant cette période, ils se sont régulièrement entretenus avec leur marabout – un chef spirituel – qui les a conseillés sur les rituels à suivre pour obtenir un statut de résident légal dans le pays.
Cette histoire n’est qu’une des nombreuses histoires présentées dans le documentaire “The Promised Land”, qui suit le voyage de Bakary de son pays d’origine, le Mali, vers l’Europe. Il n’en est pas à sa première tentative de traversée ; comme beaucoup d’autres avant lui, il a reçu les conseils de son marabout sur la manière d’effectuer ce difficile voyage.
Le documentaire se penche sur la relation unique entre les marabouts et les migrants à la recherche d’une vie meilleure en Europe. Il suit Bakary tout au long de son voyage et examine les limites que les individus sont prêts à franchir à la recherche d’un avenir plus prospère. Il explore également la façon dont l’ethnicité et la classe sociale jouent un rôle dans ces voyages et révèle la foi que les gens placent dans les êtres surnaturels dans les moments difficiles.
Grâce à des entretiens avec des habitants et des experts des questions migratoires, ainsi qu’à des images puissantes, The Promised Land dresse un portrait intime de cette question complexe.
