No available evidence establishes one road as Tajikistan’s statistically deadliest. Official travel advice instead warns of serious, changing risks on rural and mountain routes, including landslides, avalanches, ice, flooding, poor road conditions, and limited support outside towns.
The Dushanbe–Chanak highway and routes toward central Khatlon and Rasht are among the locations named in a Ministry of Internal Affairs summary of crash data. That summary does not compare fatality rates by road or account for traffic volume, so these locations should not be treated as a ranked list.
What are the most dangerous roads in Tajikistan?
There is no comparable road-by-road fatality data in the sources reviewed to identify a definitive “most dangerous” route. The Ministry of Internal Affairs reported multiple crash locations, while official travel advice describes hazards that vary by route and season.
| Route or area | What the sources say | What that does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Dushanbe–Chanak highway | Named by Tajikistan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs among locations where many accidents occur. | It is not shown to have the highest fatality rate or to be the country’s deadliest road. |
| Routes toward central Khatlon and the direction of Rasht | Also named among locations where many accidents occur in the ministry’s report summary. | The summary does not provide a traffic-adjusted comparison among routes. |
| Dushanbe–Khujand route | The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office warns of winter ice on this route. | A seasonal warning is not a road-fatality ranking. |
| Pamir Highway (M41) through GBAO | The corridor is exposed to hazards; a World Bank project document records that 2015 floods and mudslides destroyed about 3.3 km near Barsem. | The historical damage documents vulnerability, not current road conditions or a comparative death rate. |
Why mountain roads can be hazardous
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office describes uneven or poorly maintained surfaces, especially in rural and mountainous areas, poor street lighting, variable driving standards, and vehicles that may be poorly maintained. It warns of spring avalanches and landslides, winter ice on the Dushanbe–Khujand route, and seasonal flooding and damage in GBAO. Conditions may change after severe weather.

The U.S. Department of State also warns of poor infrastructure, rockslides, mudslides, avalanches, distracted driving, and possible lack of seatbelts. Its advice is: “Travel by car only during the day and on routes you know.”
What the road-crash figures show
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan reported 4,364 crashes, 1,692 deaths, and 4,776 injuries across 2020–2023. Its summary names several crash locations but does not rank them by traffic exposure or fatality rate.

The World Health Organization’s 2023 country profile reports 395 officially reported road-traffic fatalities in 2021. The same profile gives a separate WHO estimate of 1,352 fatalities for that year (95% confidence interval: 1,239–1,464), or an estimated rate of 13.9 per 100,000 people. These are different measures and should not be combined.
How to plan travel on risky roads
- Check current official travel advice and local road and weather information before departure, especially after severe weather.
- Plan to travel by car in daylight and on routes you know, following the U.S. Department of State’s advice.
- Allow for delays and carry what you need for the journey. Petrol stations are rare outside towns, and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office says there are no breakdown companies.
- For travel outside towns, consider a satellite phone, as the UK advice suggests. It is not a substitute for checking conditions or a guarantee of rescue.
FAQ
Is the Pamir Highway dangerous?
It crosses hazard-prone GBAO, and the World Bank documented serious flood and mudslide damage to part of the corridor in 2015. That evidence shows vulnerability, but does not establish that the Pamir Highway is Tajikistan’s deadliest road. Check current local conditions before travel.

Which roads in Tajikistan are risky in winter?
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office specifically warns of winter ice on the Dushanbe–Khujand route. Mountain routes can also face severe weather and changing conditions, so check current official advice and local information before setting out.
Can one road be called Tajikistan’s deadliest?
Not on the evidence reviewed. The Ministry of Internal Affairs names locations where many accidents occur, but the available summary does not provide comparable fatality rates adjusted for traffic volume.
