The Weathermen emerged from a 1969 split within Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), amid opposition to the Vietnam War and racism. PBS’s documentary The Weather Underground examines the group and includes former members’ perspectives, but the available research does not confirm that it is the same film as The Weatherman: Violent Activism.
What was the Weather Underground?
The Weathermen, later known as the Weather Underground, were a radical group that broke away from SDS. PBS describes the split as a disagreement over whether peaceful protest against the Vietnam War was sufficient. The group’s stated revolutionary aims and its violent acts are distinct parts of its history; political motives do not justify those acts.
Why did the Weathermen turn to violence?
PBS places the group in the antiwar and civil-rights context of the late 1960s and describes its break with SDS over protest tactics. That is one source’s framing of the movement. The FBI’s account focuses on the group’s bombing activity and the government’s pursuit of its members.
What happened during the Days of Rage?
PBS dates the Days of Rage to October 1969 in Chicago and describes it as the Weathermen’s first demonstration. The group later moved into clandestine activity.

What bombings did the group claim?
According to the FBI, the Weather Underground claimed responsibility for the January 29, 1975 bombing at the U.S. State Department headquarters in Washington, D.C. The FBI says the group had claimed credit for 25 bombings by the following year, including attacks on the U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon, the California Attorney General’s office and a New York City police station. This count and characterization are the FBI’s account.
The FBI also reproduces a statement from the group’s manifesto Prairie Fire: “Our intention is to disrupt the empire … to incapacitate it, to put pressure on the cracks.” This is the group’s own rhetoric, quoted by the FBI, not an independent assessment of its actions.

How did the Weather Underground end?
The group’s history included clandestine activity, bombings and government pursuit. The FBI records that three members died on March 6, 1970, when a bomb they had built exploded in a Greenwich Village townhouse. For a broader interpretation of the movement’s aims and consequences, Arthur M. Eckstein’s essay in TIME argues that it failed to achieve revolution; that is the author’s interpretation, not a settled consensus.
About the documentary
PBS Independent Lens lists The Weather Underground, directed by Sam Green and Bill Siegel, as premiering on April 27, 2004. The research available for this article does not establish that it is an alternate title for The Weatherman: Violent Activism. The original article’s claims that this supplied title premiered in 2002, won an award, or received an Academy Award nomination are not supported by the dossier.
