Its headline statistics are claims made by the film, not current verified measures; official surveys use different populations and definitions.
Directed by Sahil Bhagat and Smaran Sahu, the film was described in its production listing as a “non commercial student effort.” It appeared in the Sikh International Film Festival’s 2011 program and was reported screened at the Punjabi International Film Festival in Toronto in 2012.
What the documentary claims
The film’s listing and the 2011 festival program repeat claims that 73.5% of Punjab’s youth were addicted to drugs and that annual alcohol consumption was nearing 29 crore bottles. These figures should be understood as claims associated with the documentary, not as established current prevalence statistics.
In a 2011 critique, Mallika Kaur challenged the context provided for the 73.5% figure. The reviewed sources do not establish a critical consensus about the film.

How the claims compare with survey data
A national survey conducted in 2018 by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment through AIIMS/NDDTC, and published in 2019, estimated substance use among Punjab adults aged 18–75. These are measures of use, not the film’s claim about youth addiction.
| Measure in Punjab | Estimate | Population and source |
|---|---|---|
| Alcohol use | 34% | Adults aged 18–75; AIIMS/NDDTC survey conducted in 2018, published 2019 |
| Cannabis use | 14.23% | Adults aged 18–75; AIIMS/NDDTC survey conducted in 2018, published 2019 |
| Opioid use | 9.91% | Adults aged 18–75; AIIMS/NDDTC survey conducted in 2018, published 2019 |
| Sedative use | 4.61% | Adults aged 18–75; AIIMS/NDDTC survey conducted in 2018, published 2019 |
| Inhalant use | 0.87% | Adults aged 18–75; AIIMS/NDDTC survey conducted in 2018, published 2019 |
| Cocaine use | 0.69% | Adults aged 18–75; AIIMS/NDDTC survey conducted in 2018, published 2019 |
| Amphetamine-type stimulant use | 0.63% | Adults aged 18–75; AIIMS/NDDTC survey conducted in 2018, published 2019 |
A separate National Mental Health Survey analysis used a sample of 2,895 people from 719 households in four Punjab districts. It estimated weighted prevalence of alcohol use disorder at 7.9% and other substance use disorders at 2.48%. These disorder estimates have a different scope and outcome from the national survey’s substance-use figures.

AIIMS/NDDTC’s NDUS 2025 information page says survey activity began in July 2025 and aims to produce state- and district-level estimates. The page reviewed does not provide a replacement Punjab result, so the 2018 survey should be treated as a dated benchmark, not a current-year estimate.
Film details and screenings
The Sikh International Film Festival listed the documentary at 30 minutes in its 2011 program. A 2013 Hindustan Times report says it screened at the Punjabi International Film Festival in Toronto in 2012. These records confirm festival exposure, but do not establish awards or broad critical acclaim.
