Alien: Earth is set in 2120, two years before the original Alien (2122). In the franchise’s chronological order, it falls after Alien: Covenant and before Alien.
Where Alien: Earth fits in the timeline
Hulu’s official chronological guide places Alien: Earth between Alien: Covenant and Alien. Its 2120 setting makes it a prequel by date, though it tells a story set on Earth rather than aboard a spacecraft. The sequence around the series is:
- Alien: Covenant (2104)
- Alien: Earth (2120)
- Alien (2122)
- Alien: Romulus (2142)
Hulu’s guide was revised August 13, 2025, and lists the broader chronological order as follows:

What happens in the series’ 2120 setting?
The story shifts the franchise’s action to Earth, where five corporations hold power comparable to nations. It begins after the deep-space research ship USCSS Maginot crashes on Earth. Disney describes Prodigy’s Wendy as a hybrid: a synthetic being infused with human consciousness. These details establish the series’ setting and premise, but do not change its place between Covenant and Alien. The Walt Disney Company’s series article provides the setting and character context.
Should you watch Alien: Earth by release order or chronology?
For a first viewing, Hulu recommends release order, which preserves the sequence in which audiences encountered the franchise. For a chronological rewatch, place Alien: Earth after Alien: Covenant and before Alien. Hulu’s guide offers both approaches; neither changes the series’ in-universe year.

Does the series settle the prequel mythology?
Its position in the timeline is clear, but that alone does not resolve every connection to Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. TIME’s August 12, 2025 explainer reports that creator Noah Hawley favored the original films’ creature conception and retro-futurist sensibility, emphasizing the “perfect life form” idea rather than treating the creature as a recently created bioweapon. That is reporting about Hawley’s creative approach, not a definitive ruling on franchise continuity. TIME’s explainer discusses the distinction.
